Publisher's green cloth, title in gilt on spine with decorative gilt illustrations on both covers. Light rubbing to green cloth covers, rubbing along lower edge of front panel. Decorative end papers, wear at front hinge, text block is solid with tight bindings. Previous ownership inscription on front free end paper from "Samuel W. Smith, Jr." Complete with 57 illustrations, fold-out map, and a frontispiece portrait of the Andersonville Prison. A scarce and important work on Civil War military prisons. (Dornbusch IV, 36) (Nevins I, 194). One of the most comprehensive and complete early histories of the Civil War military prison system. Includes a list of all the Union soldiers in captivity in 1864.

Some wear and chipping at head of spine. A bit of soiling at top of textblock. Front joint weak but attached, rear joint worn but in better condition. Endpapers browned at edges. Stamped name of former owner on front & rear pastedowns. First & second free endpapers have a small tear at bottom edge. 571 p. w/ illus., index. list of prisoners. Complete, 18 full page plates and one fold out map of Andersonville with a spot near the edge and some creases at edges, as well as many small illustrations set in among the text. . An uncommon, important, and comprehensive record of Union prisoners of war in Confederate prisons, an anthology of 2 different narratives (the longer one by Isham) set apart from each other with full page "title" pages, using many sources.

First edition of this important work on the Confederate military prison system and the experience of Union soldiers therein, including a list of all Union soldiers in captivity in 1864. "The first substantial attempt to record the overall history of Civil War prisons. was derived from POW survivors' accounts, newspaper articles, and the occasional military document. [It] is anything but unbiased, which is unsurprising given that each of the authors served in the Union Army. They castigated Confederate authorities for the terrible conditions in Southern prisons, and reprinted every tale of atrocities that could be found. Despite its shortcomings, the work has a significant utility as a collection of prisoners' diaries and journals that offers a broad view of prison life in the Confederacy. While the authors' conclusions are suspect, the day-to-day perspectives resonate and offer a wide variety of POW experiences in a single volume" (Springer, pp. 118-19). Paul J.
