"The first substantial attempt to record the overall history of Civil War prisons. was derived from POW survivors' accounts, newspaper articles, and the occasional military document. [It] is anything but unbiased, which is unsurprising given that each of the authors served in the Union Army. They castigated Confederate authorities for the terrible conditions in Southern prisons, and reprinted every tale of atrocities that could be found. Despite its shortcomings, the work has a significant utility as a collection of prisoners' diaries and journals that offers a broad view of prison life in the Confederacy. While the authors' conclusions are suspect, the day-to-day perspectives resonate and offer a wide variety of POW experiences in a single volume" (Springer, pp. 118-19). Paul J.
