Patris | Paris 1814 | 10.2 x 17.4 cm | Relié | Édition originale de la traduction française établie par Élisabeth de Bon réunissant en 2 volume…s les 4 tomes de ce roman anglais anonyme imprimé originellement en 1809, qui selon André Marc, dans sonDictionnaire des romans anciens et modernes de 1819, est l'uvre d'Anna Maria Porter, sur cadette de la romancière Jane Porter. Les Porter, actives à la même époque que Jane Austen et célèbres avant les surs Brontë, furent proches du poète écossais Walter Scott. Reliures d'époque en pleine basane brune raciné, dos lisse à caissons richement dorés de roulettes de lauriers, d'annelets et de losanges, deux caissons ornés d'un réseau de losanges formé par des filets entrecroisés, avec fleurons aux angles, pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin rouge et vert, filet estampé à froid en encadrement des plats, filet doré sur les coupes, tranches mouchetées de rouge, contreplats et gardes marbrés au motif caillouté. Quelques discrètes épidermures et décharges blanches sur les plats, coins légèrement émoussés. Sur le tome 1, charmante erreur de roulette en queue du dos, rattrapée par le doreur. Sur le tome 2, petit morceau de cuir en marge de la pièce de tomaison légèrement décollé. Piqûres éparses et faibles traces de mouillure en marge supérieure. Dans le tome 3, deux infimes restaurations marginales en page de faux-titre et à la p. 8. Plusieurs corrections textuelles d'époque à l'encre brune et au crayon : sur le tome 1 p. 131, sur le tome 2 p. 90 et sur le tome 3 p. 21. * Au début du XIXe siècle, les romans d'outre-Manche sont traduits en grande quantité sur le sol français. D'après le critique signant « E. » dans le Journal de l'Empire, Les Frères Anglais est une réussite, et selon un autre, écrivant pour laGazette de France, la traduction française, autant que le texte d'origine, mérite des louanges : « Nous avons déjà eu l'occasion de faire, dans cette Gazette, l'éloge du traducteur. Le nom d'Anna Maria Porter, absent de la page de titre, sera dévoilé par le libraire André Marc comme étant celui de l'autrice en 1819. Précoce et prolifique, Anna Maria commença à écrire et publier des livres dès l'adolescence, près de dix ans avant sa sur aînée Jane. En 1807, elle publiaLes Frères Hongrois, et en 1809, elle aurait écrit Les Frères Anglais.
