Recent studies in the areas of purine metabolism and… of polymorphonuclear neutrophil phago cyte function have, however, linked immunology and clinical medicine with biochemistry. The precise defects of the inborn errors of metabolism have now provided good evidence for the importance of purine metabolism specifically the enzymes adenosine deaminase and nucleoside phosphorylase in lymphocyte function. In view of this and the steady advance of clinical and biochemical investigation of the polymorphonuclear neutrophil phago cyte, it appeared timely to review the inborn errors of immunity and phagocytosis at the fifteenth annual symposium of the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism at Elsinore, Denmark on September II-14th, I~77. The papers presented at that meeting form the basis of this volume which brings together contributions from immunologists, biochemists and clinicians. This interdisciplinary communication should be helpful to those concerned with immune function in their patients or in the laboratory. The book is divided into four sections, One: defects of cell-mediated immunity, Two: enzyme defects and immunodeficiency, Three: disorders of non-specific immunity and Four: screening for immunodeficiency. Section One contains two reviews, one on immunodeficiency from Robert Good's group in New York and another on the genetics of the immune system from Arne Svejgaard of Copenhagen.

Hugh MacDiarmid is the pen-name of Christopher Murray Grieve (1892-1978), progenitor of the S…cottish Literary Renaissance and the greatest Scottish writer of the twentieth century. Since his death, his literary and political influence have remained incalculable. Chiefly by virtue of his work, it became possible to represent Scotland, nationally and internationally, in recognisably modern ways. On the centenary of his birth in 1992, Carcanet launched the MacDiarmid 2000 programme, to bring into print all of his major writings. Books and unclipped jackets all in very good to Near Fine condition. A few of the jackets have marks where price stickers have been removed and there is a small patch of lifting of the surface to the bottom of the spine of 'Scottish Eccentrics'. The 13th volume, 'New Selected Letters' has an inscription from one of the editors, Owen Dudley Edwards, on the title page. Otherwise there are no inscriptions in any of the books. PLEASE NOTE Heavy set so extra postage may be required for non-UK customers.

Shelved in Room A octavo overflow. This custom-bound thematic set documents the growing understanding of antiseptic theory and wound care in the mid-to-late 19th century. These volumes come from a collector who had sections of books removed and bound alone. The first is a section of the July 1867 American Journal of Medical Sciences and features reviews by physicians of various books and articles on the subject. Volumes two and three are articles taken from John Ashhurst's 1882 International Encyclopaedia of Surgery, with the final one being authored by W. Watson Cheyne (1852-1932), a former chief assistant to Joseph Lister and pioneering antiseptic surgeon in his own right. 1415695. Special Collections - Upstairs.
