Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book represents an update on the clinical, biochemical and molecular genetic findings of a rare neurometabolic disorder. Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), first described in 1937, is a rare genetic disorder of bile acid synthesis that can cause developmental and cognitive disability, irreversible neurological damage and premature death. Left untreated, the syndrome is slowly progressive but can now be considered a treatable rare neurologic disease of lipid and bile metabolism.Early identification of this disorder, for example with newborn screening, would be highly significant as the burden of disease if left untreated can be profound, and morbidity and mortality easily prevented through early detection and treatment. The book collects the experience of expert physician-scientists and researchers from all over the world, beginning with the history of the disease and providing updates on the new molecular genetic data, the therapies and the international patient advocacy organizations, also with chapters reporting the experiences of the patients and calling for improved international basic research and clinical collaboration, aiming to advance understanding and enhance outcomes for CTX patients and their families, and foster patient group partnerships. The volume stems from the proceedings of an international meeting held in Jerusalem, Israel, where this disease was investigated for many years by a pioneer in the field, Prof. Vladimir Berginer at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. This meeting was hosted by the CTX Alliance, a patient advocacy group based in the USA.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book presents carefully edited and peer-reviewed papers from the 3rd International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate (OPAC-3), held in Graz, Austria. Starting with an overview on occultation methodology and its applications, the topics comprise the use of occultation data in numerical weather prediction and atmospheric wave analysis as well as in climate monitoring and change research. It covers results from current radio occultation missions (CHAMP to Formosat-3/COSMIC) and from solar, lunar, and stellar occultation by the SCIAMACHY and GOMOS instruments onboard ENVISAT. Presenting as well upcoming occultation missions and new concepts, this work provides comprehensive insight and is a key reference on the current status in the field and towards new horizons in occultation research.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Use of occultation methodology for observing the Earth's atmosphere and climate has become so broad as to comprise solar, lunar, stellar, navigation and satellite crosslink occultation methods. The atmospheric parameters obtained extend from the fundamental variables temperature, density, pressure, water vapor, and ozone via a multitude of trace gas species to particulate species such as aerosols and cloud liquid water. Ionospheric electron density is sensed as well. The methods all share the key properties of self-calibration, high accuracy and vertical resolution, global coverage, and (if using radio signals) all-weather capability. Occultation data are thus of high value in a wide range of fields including climate monitoring and research, atmospheric physics and chemistry, operational meteorology, and other fields such as space weather and planetary science. This wide area of variants and uses of the occultation method has led to a diversi fication of the occultation-related scientific community into a range of different sub-communities, however. The 1st International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Cli mate-OPAC-1- held September 16-20, 2002, in Graz, Austria, has set in ex actly at this point. OPAC-1 aimed at providing a casual forum and stimulating at mosphere fertilizing scientific discourse, co-operation initiatives, and mutual learning and support amongst members of all the different sub-communities. The workshop was attended by about 80 participants from 17 different countries who actively contributed to a scientific programme of high quality and to an excellent workshop atmosphere, which was judged by the participants to have fully met the aims expressed.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Since the early use of the occultation measurement principle for sounding pla- tary atmospheres and ionospheres, its exploitation in atmospheric remote sensing has seen tremendous advances. In this book we focus on sensors on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, which exploit solar, lunar, stellar, GNSS (Global Navi- tion Satellite Systems), and LEO-crosslink signals for observing the Earth's - mosphere and climate. The methods all share the key properties of self-calibration, high accuracy and vertical resolution, global coverage, and (if using radio signals) all-weather ca- bility. OPAC-2 aimed at providing a casual forum and stimulating atmosphere fertilizing scientific discourse, co-operation initiatives, and mutual learning and support amongst members of all different occultation communities. The workshop was attended by 40 participants from 12 different countries who actively contributed to a scientific programme of high quality and to an excellent workshop atmosphere, which was judged by the participants to have fully met the aims expressed.
