Encuadernación de tapa dura. Zustand: Muy bien. 1ª Edición. 8vo, LII + 472 pp + 476 pp. Folding map of Arabie plus engraved fronts and 3 folding plates (Table généalogique des tribus arabes naturels" + "Table généalogique des tribus des arabes naturalistes qui sont les défendans d Ismae + Plan du temple de la mecque), Bound in original full brown calf, spine with 5 raised band richly gilt. The first ed. was print by Antoine de Sommaville, 1647 Paris. André du Ryer (c. 1580 1660) studied Arabic and Turkish in Egypt in the early 1620s when he served as vice-consul for French traders in the eastern Levant. In 1631, he accompanied the French ambassador to Istanbul where they began collecting Oriental manuscripts and antiquities for their "cabinets of wonder," but such pursuits on the part of Europeans were not independent of political goals. As the Thirty Years War raged, European countries turned to the Islamic world for possible alliances against mutual adversaries. The French in Istanbul discussed cooperation with the Turks, as Holland did with Morocco; there were discussions in 1627 of a Franco-Persian alliance against the Ottomans. Europeans also turned to the large Eastern Christian populations in the Ottoman empire for supportand it was in this period that European powers began a process of co-opting these minorities, the disastrous results of which continue to resonate even today.

In den Warenkorb8vo (108 x 172 mm). (8), 166 pp., final blank leaf. Contemporary full vellum. Rare first European edition of Sa'adi's famous "Gulistan", a work in a similar tradition as the Mirrors for Magistrates. The translator, André du Ryer, was a French orientalist and consul in the Levant, notably in Alexandria and Constantinople. He returned to France in 1630 and became royal interpreter in oriental languages. He also published a Turkish grammar in 1630 and a translation of the Qur'an in 1647. Sa'adi is the most widely known Persian author in the West, and his "Gulistan" (Rose Garden), completed in 1258, was the first Persian literary work to be translated into any European language. This and later translations established Sa'adi's reputation among Western writers and inspired La Fontaine, Diderot, Voltaire, Renan, Herder, and Goethe. The present translation remained incomplete; the first complete version in a western language was the edition of the text with a Latin translation published in Amsterdam in 1651. - Insignificant traces of worming to lower blank margin (frequently repaired). Covers slightly warped, still an excellent copy in its original vellum binding. - Zenker I, p. 60, no. 491. Schwab 1009. Brunet V, 25. Cioranescu XVII, 27953.
