Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Anderson, Frederic A. (illustrator). Bound in blue cloth with a 3/4 applique to the front cover; all titles in black. No additional printings. 267 pages. With four illustrations on coated paper, all present. Zempel and Verkler state that Penn did not indicate first editions at this time; this tends to verified by other collections we have examined where none of the three books in this Penn set have any title page dates. This copy does have a 1930 inscription date to the front free endpaper. Illustrated endpapers. The cloth is edgeworn with frays at the head of the mildly faded spine. Hinges solid. All contents clean and tight. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Cloth. Zustand: Good. Green cloth. Number 164 out of 725 printed. Signed by the author on the copyright page. 210 pp. Full page and in text illustrations throughout. A mostly biographical study of Alexander Anderson, considering to be America's "first skilled wood engraver," (American Antiquarian Society) and especially noted for his attention to detail. While he started in a career in medicine, he focused only on engraving after losing many of his family members during an outbreak of yellow fever. Decorative bookplate of John S. Wood on the inside front cover. This was created by William Fowler Hopson, an artist, who painted, engraved and etched, although he is perhaps best known for his bookplate designs (See Smithsonian Art Museum website). This is dated 1909. GOOD condition. Minor scuffing and toning to the covers, with scuffing along the hinges and extremities. First several pages bear the evidence of previous water exposure, and look to have been unstuck from each other, resulting in superficial lifting of the surface of the paper along the lower edges.

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 95, [1]; 64, [1]; 154, [1]; 144, [1]; 143; [1]; 94, [1]; 98, [1]; 101, [1]; 160, [1] pp., frontispiece in each part; illustrated; 8vo, original printed wrappers. Black and white plates in each part. This set of auction catalogues consists of nine (of fourteen) parts (I: Americana, II: Sporting Prints, III: French Engravings, IV: Stipple Engravings, V: English Mezzotints, VI: Nineteenth Century Prints, VII: Old Masters, VIII: Napoleon and French Revolution, and IX: French Prints of the Eighteenth Century). These nine parts cover 6,239 lots (a number of them consisting of multiple prints), with all the greatest artists on paper represented, including Bartolozzi, Fragonard, Tiebout, Rowlandson, Stubbs, Cruikshank, Baudouin, Bonnet, Saint Aubin, Cheesman, Watson, Valentine Green, Jacque, Haden, Whistler, Faithorne, Rembrandt, Durer, Goltzius, and many others. Frederic R. Halsey was a notable book and print collector (he sold his library to Henry E. Huntington the year before the commencement of these sales), attorney, member of the council of the Grolier Club and trustee of The New York Public Library. His collection of prints was estimated to hold about 10,000 items, the scale and scope of which would be near impossible to replicate today. With the neat stamp of F. E. Robinson of Summit, NJ (probably the art dealer firm) on the upper corner of each volume (except part II). A remarkably well-preserved and clean set (except for part I, which shows small dampstains and crease at the top area of the pages); small chip at the spine edges on a couple of the parts; very mild age toning at the edges. A rare unbroken run that would otherwise be difficult to assemble today, the more so in this overall, near fine condition.
