From the preface This book titled Indigenous Knowledge and Policy Issues in Fisheries is focused on three major tribes such as Adi Galo and Nyishi of a frontier state called Arunachal Pradesh. This is a maiden attempt no only to understand the various intricate issues related to fisheries but also to document the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) of the three tribes of Arunachal Pradesh who are passing through the phase of transition. The original or natural habitats are still maintained which provides enormous scope to explore the IKS of these tribes in relation to biodiversity as well as cultural diversity in general and fisheries in general. It is an attempt to document traditional knowledge related to fish and conservation value providing many photographs related to IKS. It is hoped that this compilation will provide new information on the indigenous knowledge systems including fishing methods post harvest processing and local fish biodiversity conservation policies developed by the tribal community of the Arunachal Pradesh. This book will be highly useful to the students researchers fishery and biodiversity resource managers ethnobiologists ecologists and agencies involved in preservation and promotion of traditional knowledge for the larger benefit of the society. 96 pp.

"Ornamental fisheries, especially rearing and breeding of freshwater aquarium fish have gained popularity in India over the last two decades or so. North-Eastern India being one of the mega-diversity regions in South Asia, the aquarium fish traders obviously identified the region, especially the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River as a hunting ground for exploitation of endemic and colourful fish species and their export to the far eastern countries. But what is surprising that we do not have a proper documentation or baseline information about the exact number of species currently available in the Brahmaputra Basin and their ornamental features, rating and compatibility. After all, one requires comprehensive biological informations of the fish and their habitats in order to rearing, feeding and breeds them in captive condition. This handbook on ornamental fishes of the Brahmaputra basin will serve as a baseline data not only for the naturalist but also for the aquarist who would like to venture the world of ornamental fishes.".

Besides biological, economic and socio-cultural factors, this is primarily due to the behaviours of their husbands/partners. The key issues emerging from the primary data collected from five cross-cultural settings in India portray enhancing women s knowledge, their capacity building, improving access to STI/HIV services, enhancing family as well as community level support and creating enabling environment as the major facilitating factors to reduce their vulnerability in the country. The strategies thus identified need to be translated into programmes, when not only the female-male ratio of HIV infection is increasing, but nearly half of the new HIV infections are taking place among people below age 25. Major findings highlighted in the book will be useful for researchers, policy makers as well as other programme personnel working in South Asian countries on gender and HIV/AIDS issues.

Increase in drop out rate decrease in enrolment rate lack of infrastructural facilities indifferent attitude of teachers towards students and vague understanding of the benefits of education among the parents of rural children are some of the major ills plaguing educational scenario in rural areas. One of the biggest problems facing the spread of education in deprived areas is the timely release of funds from the government. Community participation in education in rural areas not only ensures physical and human facilities at schools but also motivates the teachers to achieve highe.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Ageing in India a state wise analysis of census data. 3. Methods materials and general background characteristics of the study population. 4. Financial status and health of elderly. 5. Financial status of the elderly and their involvement in decision making. 6. Financial status of the elderly and their input to household related activities. 7. Summary and discussion of major findings. References. Index. The proportion of population in the older ages in India is increasing very fast as elsewhere in the world. Of the states in India the population of Kerala is ageing faster than the others with below replacement fertility and very low mortality. This situation increases the need for improved information on demographic ageing and analysis of the same the knowledge of which is essential to assist policy makers in formulating and evaluating goals and programmes. Economics of ageing essentially relates to the financial requirement for the care of the aged or the available finance to take care of the elderly or how the economic status of the elderly is likely to affect the different aspects of their life in the household. Most of the studies dealing with economics of ageing relate to the first two aspects and do not really focus on the third. However the third aspect is very important from the point of view of the elderly as their happiness their dignity and their self respect are apparently influenced by their financial status. In poor societies where the majority are engaged in the informal sector including agricultural and related activities many older persons will not have any financial support or care except from their own underprivileged families. Such a situation can create a great deal of mental strain for both the elderly and the care giver as the latter will have to stretch the available resources to cover the needs of the elderly besides their own needs and that of their children. This book examines how the possession of assets or the lack of it affects the health of the elderly and their involvement in household decision making and household activities. As many studies are not undertaken in this area it is hoped that this book will lead to some discussions on the subject and further studies of similar nature would be carried out to reveal the role which money plays in the lives of the elderly in the course of their ageing with dignity and in getting a feeling of belonging to the households of which they are a part of. 190 pp.

The present work embodies the result of more than ten years floristic and utility of plant resources survey of one of the remote areas of the Eastern Ghats region comprising four districts of Orissa viz Rayagada Koraput Nowrangpur and Malkangiri. The Koraput region is rich in plant wealth and for long time this area was under explored. The study covers an area of 26 921sq km and the total number of species described are 582 (324 genera and 100 families) that includes several rare/endangered and endemic taxa along with 19 photographs and 16 line diagrams. Keys to the families genera and species (based on modified Bentham and Hooker's System) have been provided to help identification. Systematic enumeration includes species nomenclature diagnostic description and local names. Phytogeographically the area is most interesting as its floristic composition represents an admixture of the northern tropical and temperate elements with those of the Deccan elements and a meeting ground of southern and northern type of forests. The book will be useful to teachers scholars and students of botany agriculture and forestry and to plant lovers and such others. 394 pp.

References. The concept of healthy or the functional food is becoming popular in global food scenario because of its positive link with spreading of lifestyle diseases. As a consequence of this, the evaluation of nutritional and functional quality of food and food ingredients is becoming indispensable. Worldwide, many food components are being taken up for evaluation of nutritional and functional quality. Among the long array of the functional foods, fish has a long history of preventing humankind from many chronic lifestyle diseases of old ages, and it is taken equally by rich and poor people for their inherent functionality and nutritional potential respectively. Coldwater fish not only contains long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFAs; eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), but it is also a source of other health promoting bioactive components, such as vitamin D and A, selenium, iron, zinc, manganese, etc. Fish is a rich source of protein. Because of the presence of these intrinsically balanced desirable nutrients and inherent bio-active components, fish comes to everyone's plate irrespective of rich or poor, young or old, healthy or unhealthy. Considering the importance of fish in human health, ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research (ICAR-DCFR), Bhimtal took the responsibility of evaluating the nutrient composition of coldwater fishes under the umbrella of ICAR's network project #3 "Nutrient profiling and evaluation of fish as a dietary component" with a view to generate knowledge base on nutrient quality and to popularize fish consumption. With the sincere efforts of the ICAR-DCFR, nutrient composition data of 24 coldwater fish species are now available and we are sure that the present book "Fish as Health Food" will provide very useful information on the nutrient profile of coldwater fishes and their prospects in human nutrition for consumers. This book will serve as a knowledge base and an indispensable reference to the physicians, dieticians, scientists, teachers, students and other stakeholders to understand the nutritional significance of fishes and cold water fish species in particular.
