First edition thus, with preface dated 1820. 8vo, contemporary boards, rebacked some time ago and front hinge recently professionally refurbished. Spine with six compartments and two labels, nicely detailed, although in a somewhat later style. Bookplate of the eminent collector Boies Penrose II on the front pastedown and second bookplate of George & Laura Gifford on the front free endpaper. Rectangular rules around edges of boards, all edges marbled with matching marbled endpapers, edges of boards with fine minute marquetry-like decoration. Two early bookseller's labels on front pastedown endpaper, first one (presumably) from Matthews & Co., Bradford, and second one from Willis & Sotheran, London. The recent book "The Art of Thomas Bewick" by Diana Donald launched a reevaluation of Bewick, seeing him as an innovator within the framework of the age of invention. The book was reviewed in The New York Review of Books under the heading "England's Great Neglected Artist" in October, 2015.

8vo (210 x 130mm), frontispiece and pp. [ii], xl, 332; well rebound in modern green morocco, covers decorated in gilt, spine titled in gilt; marbled endpapers, gilt edges. First edition thus. This is a publication in which, as the publisher candidly confesses in the preface, 'Mr. Bewick has no concern, or interest whatever', because it consisted of blocks bought up by the Newcastle bookseller Emerson Charnley which he then used without Bewick's consent. Tattersfield tells the story of this edition at some length (II pp. 622-5), and distinguishes it from a later reprint by Henry Bohn (undated, but c. 1850) which does not have Hodgson's colophon at the very end of the volume. Although all the wood-engravings are by the Bewicks (except the frontispiece portrait of Thomas, which is by Charlton Nesbit), the contents are a mixture of blocks made for various publications. Tattersfield TB 2.576. Provenance. Bookplate of C.W. Dyson Perrins (1864-1958), the great collector of medieval manuscripts, books and other works of art.

56 engraved illustrations and 38 tail-pieces (repeating 8 designs), title-page with small smudge, occasional spots, pp. 122 (p.121-122 misbound between p.12 & 13), 8vo in 4s, slightly later tree calf, pastedown with modern wood-engraved bookplate, edges rubbed, backstrip head and foot worn with slight loss, good. A re-issue of Trusler's Proverbs Exemplified, (1790), with additional wood-engraved illustrations including five drawn from The Progress of Man and Society (1791), a new Samaritan wood-engraving and nine vignettes. John Bewick was named as the illustrator for the first edition, but perhaps due to the fact that this edition was published after his untimely death (1795), this copy's watermark dated 1814, he is not accredited here. (Tattersfield JB, p. 47,107,141; Hugo 44).

305 x 238 mm. (12 x 9 5/8"). xx, 76 pp. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY SCARLET STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, covers framed by gilt fillets and decorative rolls, smooth spine, panels diapered into compartments containing annular dots, gilt lettering, turn-ins with gilt bead roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a velveteen-lined brown cloth chemise in an excellent matching morocco-backed slipcase. Engraved title page vignette, five plates, and seven vignettes in the text by Thomas and John Bewick. A Large Paper Copy. Front pastedown with bookseller's ticket of E. Lloyd. Hugo 87; Ray "England," 50. See also Glaister, p. 75. Four small black (ink?) spots to boards, a hint of wear to corners, title and dedication leaf a bit foxed, occasional mild foxing elsewhere, but an excellent copy--the text clean and fresh with capacious margins, and the beautiful contemporary binding lustrous and virtually unworn. This extremely attractive poetic production is called by Hugo "a magnificent result of the efforts of the wood-engraver, type-founder, papermaker, and printer," and it is offered here in a richly decorative contemporary binding. The text is composed of two poems by Oliver Goldsmith ("The Traveller" and "The Deserted Village") and one poem by Thomas Parnell ("The Hermit"), accompanied by biographical sketches of each writer (that of Parnell written by Goldsmith). The charming illustrations are the work of the Bewick brothers. More than any contemporaneous artist or printer, Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was responsible for a renewed interest in wood engraving, his virtuosity and prolific output in the medium raising its reputation in book production. And here, his artworks are accompanied by those of his brother John (1760-95). The large scenes, which gracefully depict the figures from the poems, are accompanied by the small head- and tailpiece vignettes for which Thomas Bewick is best remembered, the gently sentimental scenes of rural vistas and picturesque ruins perfectly offsetting the text. Our volume was beautifully printed on heavy Whatman paper by Bewick's friend, the celebrated William Bulmer, who, in Glaister's words, was "one of the best printers of the time, striving to raise the standard of English typography. To this end he perfected his own ink, used good paper and specially cut types." Ray praises the printing as well as the illustrations, writing that "thanks to Bulmer, this is by far the handsomest of contemporary volumes containing Bewick's work." Our copy, in pleasing contemporary morocco, is a particularly appealing example.
