In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. (no dust jacket) [light external soiling, minor shelfwear, modest browning to spine cloth; internally there is a notable one-time owner's name and address (see Notes) in red ink on the front endpaper, and the Introduction contains some minor pencil annotations and one short underlined passage.]. (frontispiece portrait) The most notable work of Henri-Frà dà ric Amiel (1821-1881), a Swiss philosopher, poet and critic, it was originally published posthumously in 1883/1884. Per the entry on Amiel in the 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica: "Losing his parents at an early age, he travelled widely, became intimate with the intellectual leaders of Europe and made a special study of German philosophy in Berlin. In 1849 he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the academy of Geneva, and in 1854 became professor of moral philosophy. These appointments, conferred by the democratic party, deprived him of the support of the aristocratic party; which comprised nearly all the culture of the city. This isolation inspired the one book by which Amiel lives, the Journal Intime, which, published after his death, obtained a European reputation [and] gained [him] a sympathy which the author had failed to obtain in his life." Covering the years from 1847 until his death, the first English translation of the journal (by Mrs. Humphry Ward) was published by Macmillan in 1885; the present volume is the "Enlarged and Revised Edition, conforming to the original text." The one-time owner of this copy (whose printed name and address is in red ink at the upper corner of the front endpaper) was American playwright/screenwriter/editor William Kozlenko (1907-1984).…
