Complete with 194 text engravings numbered I-CXCV (numbers CXLVIII and CXLIX combined as one double-page illustration), twenty of which (numbers XCV, CXLI-CXLV, CXLVII, CXLVIII/CXLIX, CLI-CLIII, CLXXXI-CLXXXIII, CLXXXVI, CLXXXIX-CXCII, and CXCV) are double-page and the remainder full-page. Some generally foxing and toning and a few insignificant rust spots. Overall, an excellent copy. "Ramelli's book on machinery, one of the most elegantly produced of all technological treatises, emphasized and exploited the unlimited possiblities [sic] of machines. For example, the dozens of water-powered pumps and mills shown in his treatise clearly demonstrated that non-muscular power could be substituted for horse- or human-power in any mechanical task requiring continuous or repetitive application of force, and the portrayal of more than twenty types of water pump (including his own invention, the rotary pump) destroyed the notion that there were necessary limits to the configuration or arrangement of a machine. Ramelli's mechanical astuteness showed itself both in his inventions and in his innovative combinations of fundamental elements. His machines became part of the common stock of mechanical knowledge, and his mechanical treatise remained a primary influence for at least two centuries. The plates in Ramelli's treatise are artistically as well as technologically superb, the bilingual text beautifully printed, and both plates and text surrounded by handsome borders of typographic ornaments. The reasons for this sumptuousness were twofold: First, Ramelli had dedicated the book to his patron Henri III; and second, he had previously had several designs stolen from him by a trusted associate (probably Ambroise Bachot, later engineer to Henri IV), who published them in corrupt and mutilated form and claimed them as his own. As a result of this experience Ramelli planned his treatise as a particularly lavish work that would be difficult to counterfeit, and produced and published it from his own house where he could maintain absolute control over the project. He succeeded in preventing any pirated editions and made the book so expensive and difficult to produce that it was reprinted only once, in a German edition of 1620, before the twentieth century" (Norman Library). Generally good dark impressions of the plates. First and sole edition of this profusely illustrated landmark on early technology, and along with Agricola's De Re Metallica (1556), the most influential and copied of all the early illustrated manuals of inventions and machines. Its influence was felt in such later works as Böckler's Theatrum machinarum (1662), Grollier de Servière's treatise (1719), and it was even copied in China, where it had been taken by Jesuit missionaries. Roughly half of the machines are pumps for raising water or for other hydraulic purposes, with the remainder including mills, looms, derricks, metal-working tools, presses, even mechanical fountains. Many are of course connected with warfare: in addition to weapons, 13 chapters are devoted to machines for breaking and entering forcing doors, lifting doors off their hinges, cutting through metal fences and all of which Ramelli insists can be accomplished without the perpetrator being discovered. The lavish number of illustrations and their quality set something of a contemporary standard for a technological publication. Though rooted in the general tendency of these works to illustrate as well as explain, Ramelli was motivated, in addition, by the wish to discourage every prospect of his designs from being pirated (preface, **5v-**8r). "Ramelli planned this work as a particularly handsome volume, difficult to counterfeit, strictly supervised by the author himself and published with the imprint, 'in casa del' autore'"(Mortimer 452). The engraved title and portrait are signed with the monogram of Leonard Gaultier, and 3 of the plates with the monogram JG, which some bibliographers have identified as Jean de Gourmont. The remaining plates are unsigned and have been attributed to an unknown atelier, though an interesting case for an attribution to a craftsman in the Ramelli household, Ambroise Bachot, has been made by Gnudi. In 1572, during the siege of La Rochelle, Ramelli was gravely wounded and taken prisoner by the Huguenots. Upon his release, he remained in the French king's service and, in 1587, was entrusted by Catherine de' Medici with overseeing the fortification of Paris.Le diverse et artificiose machine, Ramelli's magnum opus, is renowned for its blend of technical innovation and artistic refinement. The treatise explores the vast potential of mechanical invention and had a profound impact on the development of mechanical and military engineering in early modern Europe, including the work of Grollier de Serviere and Jacob Leupold. The work was developed over several years in collaboration with fellow military engineer Ambroise Bachot, and was likely printed in a press installed in Ramelli's own Paris residence.Dedicated to Henry III, the volume opens with Leonard Gaultier's striking portrait of the author: richly attired, seated at a table, helmet in one hand and compass in the other, measuring the plan of a fortress. The book presents an extraordinary array of mechanical inventions: 'One hundred and ten water-lifting machines, twenty-one grain mills, four alternative mill designs, ten cranes, seven transport mechanisms for heavy loads, two earth-lifting devices, two cisterns, four fountains, fifteen military bridges, fourteen screw jacks and other wall-demolishing tools, one artillery mechanism, and more' (DBI, trans.). Many of these are supported by enlarged schematics showing the intricate gear systems that animate them, testament to Ramelli's meticulous concern for mechanical precision.Among the 195 plates is the earliest known European depiction of a bookwheel (plate CLXXXVIII), a rotating reading desk modelled after a water wheel, designed to allow simultaneous consultation of multiple large volumes. It is often cited as one of the earliest 'information retrieval' machines, and was especially recommended by Ramelli for readers 'troubled by gout or otherwise incapacitated', an early nod to accessibility in design. First edition, in a beautiful contemporary binding, of one of the most famous illustrated books of the sixteenth century and a landmark in book design. ?The military engineer Agostino Ramelli produced a remarkable illustrated book in 1588 de…scribing a large number of machines that he devised. Called Le diverse et artificiose machine del Capitano Agostino Ramelli (The various and ingenious machines of Captain Agostino Ramelli); this work had a great impact in the field of mechanical engineering. The book contains 195 superb engravings of various machines along with detailed descriptions of each one in both French and Italian? (Brashear). About half of the engravings depict hydraulic devices, the rest showing military machines as well as fountains, bridges, cranes, foundry equipment, etc., and a smattering of innovative devices such as the famous ?reading wheel? or the bouquet with artificial singing birds. In addition to weapons, 13 chapters are devoted to machines for breaking and entering ? forcing doors, lifting doors off their hinges, cutting through metal fences ? and all of which Ramelli insists can be accomplished without the perpetrator being discovered! ?The plates in Ramelli?s treatise are artistically as well as technologically superb, the bilingual text beautifully printed, and both plates and text surrounded by handsome borders of typographic ornaments. The reasons for this sumptuousness were twofold: first Ramelli had dedicated the book to his patron Henri III; and second, he had previously had several designs stolen from him by a trusted associate (probably Ambroise Bachot, later engineer to Henri IV), who published them in corrupt and mutilated form and claimed them as his own. As a result of this experience Ramelli planned his treatise as a particularly lavish work that would be difficult to counterfeit, and produced and published it from his own house where he could maintain absolute control over the project? (Norman). Together with Agricola?s De Re Metallica (1556), Ramelli?s work was the most influential and copied of all the early illustrated manuals of inventions and machines. Its influence was felt in such later works as B?ckler?s Theatrum machinarum (1662), and it was even copied in China, where it had been taken by Jesuit missionaries. Provenance: Girolamo Cosmi Rovereto (Ownership signature on the title); Roger Paultre (small label on fly leaf ? see his Catalogue, Grands si?cles et grandes images, 1993, no. 247). ?Ramelli was born in northern Italy, probably in 1531. As a young man he served under the famous Italian warlord, Gian Giacomo de' Medici, Marquis of Marignano, and became trained in mathematics and military engineering. His reputation grew and he eventually left for France to serve under the Duke of Anjou, later King Henry III. His year of death is unknown and usually given as ?circa 1600,? but since documents exist to show that he was still alive in 1608, circa 1610 is a more realistic approximation. ?Ramelli was greatly influenced by the increasing importance placed on mathematics and geometry as an important tool for engineers and artists, and particularly by the writings of Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607) and Petrus Ramus (1515-1572). Ramelli's interest in mathematics is demonstrated in the preface to his book, ?On the excellence of mathematics in which is shown how necessary mathematics are for learning all the liberal arts.? Ramelli also wanted to make his book accessible to many engineers so, as an Italian living in France, he produced both Italian and French descriptions of the machines. ?The book itself is a fine example of the exquisite work of late sixteenth-century French printers and artists. It is a large book in folio format thus allowing great detail to be placed in the numerous engraved plates which total 195 in all (although plates 148 and 149 are combined into one image). Der aus dem Mailändischen stammende Erfinder diente nach Abschluß seiner mathematischen Studien im kaiserlichen Heer, kam 1555 in die Dienste des Duc d'Anjou, des späteren Königs Henri III., wurde 1573 bei der Belagerung von La Rochelle schwer verwundet und fiel dann in die Hände der Protestanten, aus den ihn der Duc d'Anjou durch Zahlung eines Lösegelds befreite und anschließend nach Paris holte. Ramelli wurde bekannt durch sein Maschinenbuch a. d. J. 1588, Le diverse et artificiose machine", in dem er verschiedene Maschinen beschrieb, darunter eine kreiskolbenartige Wasserpumpen die als Vorläufer des Wankelmotor angesehen werden kann , ein amphibischer Kampfwagen und das heute noch mit seinem Namen verbundene Bücherrad. Etwas berieben und mit einem kleinen Löchlein in der Unterschrift sowie einem kleinen Papierdurchbruch am linken Rand.
