A striking trade card celebrating 'Wampole's Preparation', and notably its receipt of a Gold Medal at the International Health Exhibition of 1910, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This ton…ic, containing extracts of cod livers, malt, calcium and wild cherry, was created in the 1880s by Henry K Wampole in Philadelphia. It found a ready market with doctors, providing as it did a way of administering cod liver oil in a more palatable form, having masked both the taste and odour of the oil. The company soon expanded with a large and well equipped second laboratory opened in Ontario in 1905. As the present striking card attests, it clearly found an International market. Seemingly not in Atwater.

An advertising novelty produced by the famous firm of Beecham's. As the note along the left margin states: 'When you suffer fr…om colds, chills, influenza, headache, rheumatism, nerve pains, Beecham's Powders Act like Magic'. The present curiosity is itself a magical trick to highlight the tag line. The application of a glowing piece of burned string to the central panel will reveal a secret message - which in this case appears to reveal a tortoise! A previous example, showed a chicken, with another, which though difficult to discern, incorporated the phrase 'Beecham's Pills'.

In den WarenkorbSmall 8vo, single folded sheet, pp. [4]; front and rear 'covers' printed in red, with music notation in black; some minor soiling and spotting, but otherwise very good. One of a series of advertising song sheets promoting Beecham's Pills, including written score and lyrics for the popular sea-song 'The Anchor's Weigh'd' by John…Braham. The pills, originally sold as a laxative, first appeared on the market in 1842, and were invented by the chemist Thomas Beecham (1820-1907), grandfather of the famous conductor. The pills themselves, for the cure of 'bilious and nervous disorders', were a combination of aloe, ginger, and soap, and unusually for patent medicines, they did actually have some positive effect on the digestive process. The 'Beecham's Music Portfolio' eventually ran to some twenty volumes, each containing 30 popular songs for voice and piano. Originally published in St Helen's, Lancashire, from where the firm was based, the complete volumes of songs could be purchased from the company, whilst individual songs sheets, as here, appear to have been sold, or indeed given away, by pharmacies.

In den WarenkorbLarge, striking, colour poster, 120 x 49.6cm. This poster has been folded causing three horizontal creases, and another vertical running the full length of the long sheet. Repairs to folds including some colouring along paper abrasion on folds on image itself. Still a lovely poster. This beautiful colour advertisement poster pro…motes the moth-proof serge kimono fabric from Bud?seru (Grape Brand Serge). Serge kimonos became highly fashionable in Japan around the turn of the 20th century. The merino wool was imported from Australia, being regarded as the most suitable fibre for single-layer kimonos. However, woollen fabrics were susceptible to insect damage. To combat this issue, the Grape Brand Serge manufacturer developed a moth-proofing treatment utilising chemicals from the German company Bayer. According to the poster, Bayer's compounds were used, and their treated serge was marked on the selvedge as "moth-proof Budo serge". This processing took place at their factory in Aichi Prefecture. In the foreground, a classical Japanese beauty graces a hillside, elegantly attired in a purple kimono with a parasol in her hand. Her black obi bears an unusual rainbow design. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner.

Of great interest is the seedsman's advertisement bound in at the front - Observations on the Culture of the Mangel Wurzel, by Jenkins and Gwyther, Nursery and Seedsmen, New Road and in the Regent's Park. Ths extends to two and a half small sides, folded and marked, with the remains of an address and a postmark on the final side. Lettsom's work is rare anyway, and I can find no trace of another copy of the Jenkins and Gwyther advertisement. [Abbe de Commerell had a great interest in husbandry and made a special study of vegetable and fodder crops. Seed of the mangel wurzel fell in to Lettsom's hands and after sowing it at his botanic garden at Grove Hill he found that it produced an excellent crop for both humans and cattle. He immediately commissioned a translation, which went in to three editions within a month. His efforts fell on stony ground, and he was somewhat derided for his enthusiasm. Shortly in to the next century however it was greatly taken up by farmers. It was at this time that Jenkins and Gwyther issued their little pamphlet. Their nursery at Regent's Park subsequently became the gardens of the Royal Botanic Society. The owner of this copy was Richard Prime of Walberton House near Arundel. Prime, a strong Tory, was M.P. for the western division of Sussex 1847-54 and the dominant figure in Walberton in his day.]. { Blanche Henrey 556}.

In den Warenkorbdj. First Edition. First U.S. edition. In heavy-paper advertising dust jacket imprinted "Columbia Book Cover/ Protector Co.,/ Patented/ 1320 Chamber of Commerce/ Chicago Ill," and consisting of fold-on sleeves for the book covers, each one three-holed punched and fitted with metal grommets through which string is laced across th…e spine. One cover illustrated with lithograph of the Siegel-Cooper & Co. department store at the corner of Van Buren and Congress. The other with a chromolithograph of The Woman's Building at the 1863 Chicago's World Fair with "The Womans [sic] Building. 200 x 400 feet. Cost $120,000" printed at bottom. The cover is folded onto the book upside down, so that the Woman's Building image is on the back vs. the front and the flaps are reversed. Presumably intended as a school textbook cover - with flaps intended for the front unprinted and the ones intended for the back printed with a message encouraging children not to spend their nickels and dimes on useless things when they can deposit them and earn a 4.5% interest instead. (Unfortunately for all involved, Henry Siegel and his partner, Frank Vogel, would later be accused of using monies from the bank to finance their department stores as well as receiving bank deposits while insolvent.) Although nothing on the jacket explicitly states that it was made for distribution at or during the fair, period advertisements show that Siegel-Cooper department store dubbed itself the other "Magnetic Attraction" in Chicago during the fair, and offered extra services to entice fair-goers into the store -- while also advertising their unregulated Savings Bank. 8vo green cloth boards stamped in gilt and black; 194 pages plus 6 pages of publisher's ads. Book is near fine with trace rubbing at spine, offsets from jacket flaps on opposing endpapers, and 1897 ownership signature on front endpaper. Dust jacket/book cover protector is a little age darkened but otherwise about very good with edges rubbed, corners nicked, short narrow hole to one fold, and few inconspicuous tears. We can find no other example of a similarly styled dust jacket. Rare.

It proved so popular, that it was inevitable that a number of imitations were produced, with many claiming to be the genuine Tilly Haarlem Oil. At some point in the early 20th century the company gained an American backer, and in around 1906 the Dutch government granted a charter to the company which was given the right to use the word "genuine" and the words "Oudste Fabriek" (oldest factory) on its product, a privilege which was not been granted to any other concern or individual making or handling Haarlem Oil. The American connection meant that the remedy had to conform with the requirements of the United States Food and Drugs Act of 1906. The present broadside attests to this, and notes that from hereon their bottles will have blown on to them the words 'G. de Konig Tilly'. Indeed in 1911 the Federal Government prosecuted the The Holland Medicine Co, of Scranton, Pennsylvania for falsely selling Gold Medal Genuine Tilly Haarlem Oil Capsules, For kidney, liver and bladder. In den WarenkorbSingle sheet broadside 200 x 135mm; with woodcut armorial device at head, text in double columns; paper browned, a little spotted, and quite creased, with a number of small holes just touching text but without significant loss; one or two small marginal nicks and tears, one at central fold, with two very small and discreet repai…rs along lower edge. A seemingly later example of this medical broadside promoting the myriad benefits of 'medicamentum Gratia Probatum' - a therapeutic remedy made and sold by Nicolas de Koning of Haarlem, and subsequently by his Widow and near kinsmen. Truly a miraculous medicine, the broadside claims that it can strengthen the stomach, cures scurvy, hysterical pains, anxiety, soothing open wounds and sores as well as burns, of reviving the weak and feeble, and even of dissolving kidney stones. The sulphur based Haarlem oil was discovered by Claas Tilly in 1696 and soon gained a reputation as a cure for kidney and bladder complaints. According to the Haarlem Oil website he was assisted by Hermann Boerhave in the production of the remedy, who though sharing the profits of the medicine and recommending its use, was prevented from associating his name with a commercial proprietary product through the ethics of his profession. 'The ingredients follow a process that take several days, in which the particular chemical preparation and difficult analysis has permitted the Tilly Family to preserve the secret of the production during 200 years' (present day website). Various issues are cited on OCLC and in a number of languages. Whilst the text remained unchanged for several years, variations are found in the final paragraph listing the kinsmen selling the product. Some printing errors also exist in the imprint. The current issue states: 'This Medicamentum is Made and Sold in the City of Haarlem, in the Province of Holland; at the house of Nicolaas de Konig Tilly, who is the Author of the same, since the year 1764, and so was his Grandfather Claas Tilly before him, that was the Chief Inventor of it, since the year 1696. After the Decease of Nicolaas de Konig Tilly this Medicament shall be made and sold by his near kinsmen; viz. Jan de Konig, Leendert de Konig, Abraham Tilly and Adolf de Konig'. A modern version exists to this day in the form of Haarlem Oil - which is sold for the use of both humans and animals. In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. Single leaf, red-brown color, some tears and small chips along the edges. Advertisement for a school children's "Play Day" at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco, which included bell ringing, acrobatic feats, dancing, and a special performance from the London Patomime and Comedy Company. The Sutro Baths (1896-19…66) was a public saltwater swimming pool in San Francisco, built and owned by entrepreneur and former mayor of San Francisco Adolph Sutro, and heralded at its opening as the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Sutro's idea was to provide an inexpensive recreational swimming facility, mainly for the working class of San Francisco. In true progressive spirit, Sutro also included natural history exhibits at the entrance to the baths as an educational opportunity. However, due to their high maintenance and operating cost, the baths were eventually converted to an ice skating rink, and then sold in 1964 to property developers. A fire in 1966 destroyed what remained of the baths. Throughout its lifetime, the Sutro Baths were the setting for a handful of films, including two short films in 1897 by Thomas A. Edison and the 1958 American film noir, "The Lineup." This leaf was likely an early promotional piece for the Sutro Baths.
