Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. This fascinating history, first published 160 years ago, is a treasure trove of descriptions of small events from the perspective of the early settlers of the border regions beyond the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains (and extending as far as Cincinnati and parts of Kentucky). It focusses mainly on the last half of the eighteenth century, when Williamsburg was the bustling capital of the Virginia Colony, and Patrick Henry resided in the Governor's Mansion. Grand plantations were flourishing along the James River, while in the wilderness, pioneers struggled against the elements of nature and the savages of the land they were trying to tame. The information was gathered mainly from pioneers and their children, thereby preserving these early family and local traditions. This book also covers the early history of Virginia and major events and leaders such as George Washington and some of the men who served with him before and after the Revolution. However, the main focus is on the many smaller deeds of the backwoodsmen, early settlers, and Indians. Illus., Index, 468 pp. [MC-W2000].…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Hardcover. Bound in full leather with faded maroon label on the spine. Leather is worn and rubbed at the corners and edges of boards, and hinges, but despite the wear the binding is altogether intact. It appears to be the original binding, from the remote 1831 outpost of Clarksburg - which was Virginia at the time but is West Virginia now. Text block tight, but pages much toned and foxed and stained. They are legible, but they have been through a lot. Title page dated 1831. No other dates. 319 pages plus a publisher's advertisement. This copy, in addition to being much-read, has a couple paragraphs circled by early reader, and a couple words written in the margins. Please email with questions or to request photos. An important title.…

See photos.** PS2023.0914** 319 pages. 4.25 x 7 inches** This is a first edition of one of the classic books concerning the hostile settlement of the Ohio country. The Chronicles of Border Warfare by Alexander S. Withers (1792-1865) is considered by Western antiquarians to form the best account of frontier life and Indian warfare that has been printed.** An excellent example of the genre of frontier history, the book focuses on the American settlement throughout the northwestern portion of colonial Virginia (an area which today encompasses parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) from the French and Indian War to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and the ensuing clashes with the indigenous population. While the watershed events of the advancing frontier (the arrival of scouts, establishment of forts, and the ultimate triumph of the U.S. Army) give a structure to Withers' account, what the book is really about are detailed, often grisly, descriptions of contacts between the races. While the Chronicles purport to be essentially historical in nature, genealogists will appreciate the numerous references to the intrepid scouts and settlers along the frontier furnished by the author.** Because this book was issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed for local consumption, most copies were read until scarcely legible.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. 1st Edition. First edition. Complete without the four-page list of contents, which was printed later and is found inserted in some copies. 320pp. 12mo (7 x 4 1/4 in.; 178 x 108 mm). Withers' book is still one of the primary sources on backwoods life in the Alleghenies and upper Ohio. Theodore Roosevelt (quoted by Larned) called this book "one of the number of books which have a great value because they preserve the traditions of the border about the Indian fighting of the second half of the eighteenth century in the West." This is the best edition, with Thwaites' judicious notes and Draper's excellent Memoir "One of the more circumstantial and gory compilations of Indian warfare" (Streeter).
