On the first sight one would expect the technology - including the physiology of the host strains - to be optimised in detail after a 20 year's period of development. However, several constraints have limited the incentive for optimisation, especially in the pharmaceutical industry like the urge to proceed quickly or the requirement to define the production parameters for registration early in the development phase. The additional expenses for registration of a new production strain often prohibits a change to an optimised strain. Der Leser beachte den Unterschied zur zweiten Auflage: dort wurde den Schizophrenien ein Kapitel gewidmet, heute legen wir einen ganzen Band vor. Heißt dies, daß die Forschung ganz neue Resultate hervorgebracht hat? Unsere Antwort ist: nein. Die Herausgeber meinen jedoch, daß hervorgehoben werden kann eine Vertiefung des psychodynamischen Verständnisses und eine Verbreiterung des biologischen Ansatzes andererseits. Durch umfassende Katamnesen wurde der Verlauf der Schizophrenien klarer erkenntlich, die Behandlungsstrategien haben sich verfeinert, insbesondere was die Rückfallprophylaxe durch Dauermedikation betrifft. In den Abschnitten zur Psychopathologie mußte Rücksicht genommen werden auf die heute schärfer denn je ins Blickfeld getretene Schwierigkeit der Abtrennung der Schizophrenien sui generis zu Grenzsituationen. Überhaupt wird der Leser in den Kapiteln zur Psychopathologie wohl den auffallendsten Unterschied zu den vorhergehenden Auflagen konstatieren. Wohl haben die Autoren mit Recht die von Kraepelin und Bleuler vorgezeichneten Pfade nicht ganz verlassen, aber das Hauptgewicht liegt nicht mehr auf der subtilen Beschreibung sogenannter typischer Bilder, sondern auf der Einbettung der Symptomatologie in einen allgemeinen Zusammenhang. Die unaufhaltsame Spezialisierung hat mit sich gebracht, daß es keinen Manfred Bleuler mehr gibt, der wie damals in der zweiten Auflage das ganze weite Gebiet der neueren Schizophrenieforschung überblickt hätte. So mußten wir in Kauf nehmen, daß die einzelnen Beiträge sich gelegentlich überlappen, aber auch daß der Puzzle-Charakter der heutigen Schizophrenielehre schärfer zum Ausdruck kommt als in der ersten und zweiten Auflage. Soll dies bedeuten, daß der Graben zwischen biologischer und psychodynamischer Psychiatrie sich verbreitert hat? Der Anschein trügt. Aus den vorliegenden Kapiteln spricht im Gegenteil der Wille zur Synthese und Zusammenschau in einem noch verstärkteren Maße als dies in den vorangegangenen Auflagen der Fall war. Die Schizophrenien sind noch heute das Kernstück der Psychiatrie, und als Herausgeber sind wir uns nur zu gut bewußt, daß auch dieser Band eine Etappe bedeutet, daß die Forschung weitergehen muß und wird, aber daß wir weniger denn je zur Hoffnung berechtigt sind, eines Tages auf eine Erklärung im Sinne einer linearen Kausalität zu stoßen.
