While Burgess 'says Stanhope Forbes is the best man coming on & that he has painted some very good portraits', from what Long himself remembers of his work, it seems 'very black'. He concludes: 'Why not give it to Burgess? he is painting capitally just now & I know he would be very pleased.'.

Konstantin Nikolayevich Bestuzhev-Ryumin (?????????? ?????????? ????????-?????; 1829 in Kudryoshki, Nizhny Novgorod Governorate - 1897) was one of the most popular Russian historians of the 19th century. He held a chair in Russian History at the University of St. Petersburg (1864-85) and was elected into the Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1890. In 1878 he founded and gave his name to the Bestuzhev Courses, "the largest and most prominent women's higher education institution in Russia" (source: wikipedia).

First edition of this famous work, magnificently illustrated with 41 chromolithogr. plates showing altogether 64 fish species in vivid colours, each species drawn from nature by A.F. Lyndon, nearly all of which are pictured lying on the bank of a river or loch and often against evocative background locations. The plates are beautifully rendered in delicate chromolithography by Benjamin Fawcett, who was responsible for printing the plates in Morris's British Birds and the same author's book on the homes of the British nobility. "Houghton, a Shropshire clergyman, aimed his book at the fisherman rather than the naturalist, and the text (of which there is, unusually, plenty) gives information about recognition, feeding and breeding habits, habitat, bait and so on" (Buchanan, Nature into Art, 168). Alexander Francis Lydon's plates, which were printed by Benjamin Fawcett, show each fish in what is meant to be its natural habitat. The prints were so successful that the book won a gold medal at the London Fisheries' Exhibition, and in 1894 they were copied for inclusion in the periodical The Angler. Nissen ZB1 2009.
