Cole describes his copy as having 30 plates in one volume and one in the other, for a total of 31. I had been personally presented to Mr. Irving for the first time, only a year before, under the introduction of my good friend, Mr. Clark (the veteran Editor of the old Knickerbocker in its palmy days). Thereafter I had met him from time to time, and had paid a charming visit to his delightful home of Sunnyside. But it was after the date of the publication of this book, & during the summer of 1852, that I saw Mr. Irving more familiarly, & came to appreciate more fully that charming bonhomie, and geniality in his character, which we all recognize so constantly in his writings, & if I set down here a few recollections of that pleasant intercourse, they will, I am sure, more than make good the place of the old letter of Dedication, & will serve to keep alive the association 1 wish to cherish, between my little book & the name of the distinguished author who so kindly showed me his favor. I saw Mr. Irving afterward repeatedly in New York & passed two delightful days at Sunnyside. I can never forget a drive with him upon a crisp autumn morning through Sleepy Hollow, and all the notable localities of his neighborhood, in the course of which he kindly called my attention in the most unaffected & incidental way to those which had been specially illustrated by his pen & with a rare humor recounted to me some of his boyish adventures among the old Dutch farmers of this region. Most of all, it is impossible for me to forget the rare kindliness of his manner, his friendly suggestions, and the beaming expression of his eye. I met it last, at the little stile, from which I strolled away to the station at Deamian; and when I saw the kind face again, it was in the coffin, at the little church, where he attended service." ; a near FINE copy, with a very few marks, slight foxing, scarce important 19th century American popular fiction. On joint une lettre, du 1er octobre 1848, d'un élu de la mairie du 8e arrondissement, Richard, à la même, confirmant la réception d'un don de 50 francs de Marie Dorval, ainsi qu'un berceau, pour les crèches du 8e arrondissement et d'un don de deux douzaines de chemises de Foucher. Ce don fut fait suite à la mort de Georges Luguet, le jeune fils de Caroline Dorval, le 16 mai 1848. On joint la quittance pour ce don. [365].

The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Wear is present along the lower edge of the cloth, with a tiny opening at the lower rear corner and modest wear at the head of the spine. The large linen-backed folding Map of the North Polar Regions remains present in the publisher's rear pocket; a few fold intersections show light wear, but the map remains remarkably well preserved and highly presentable. ENDURING SIGNIFICANCE: Gathering the Last Testimony. Unlike many Arctic explorers of his generation, Hall understood that the people who knew the Arctic best were the Inuit. Living among them between 1864 and 1869, he learned their language, adopted their methods of travel, and carefully recorded oral traditions concerning the fate of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. Many of these accounts were preserved here for the first time and became indispensable sources for later Franklin scholarship. Mapping the Unknown. Hall's work extended far beyond exploration. His expeditions through Repulse Bay, the Strait of Fury and Hecla, and King William's Land combined careful surveying with geographical observation, preserving routes, landmarks, and environmental conditions that expanded contemporary knowledge of the Canadian Arctic. The result is both a narrative of travel and a lasting record of a landscape still only partially known to Western explorers. Seeing the Arctic.
