Leonardo Loredan (Venezia, 1436 ? 21 giugno 1521) fu il 75º doge della Repubblica di Venezia, in carica dal 2 ottobre 1501 fino alla morte. Appartenente a un ramo eminente del patriziato veneziano, svolse una lunga carriera politica all'interno delle magistrature repubblicane, ricoprendo incarichi di rilievo quali savio, consigliere ducale e procuratore di San Marco. La sua elezione al dogado avvenne in una fase di forte tensione internazionale, culminata nella Guerra della Lega di Cambrai, che vide la Serenissima contrapposta a una coalizione formata da Francia, Impero, Papato e altre potenze europee. They could be classified by topics such as family, sons' education, editing and publishing, dedication and patronage, classical texts, Venetian life and ceremony.The letter at p. 52 is addressed to the poet and playwright Marco Armonio (1477-c. 1552), who in 1500 had written and staged in Venice a neo-Latin comedy entitled Stephanium, which was greeted with great enthusiasm. In the letter, Sabellico, who had the chance to read the comedy before it was published around 1503 and had attended first-hand its first staging, praises the work for the ?argumentum, dignitas personarum, sententiarum gravitas, verba. One of his most famous works, the Kalendarium was an innovative calendar that predicted solar and lunar eclipses and calculated the day of the year in which, from 1477 to 1531, Easter would fall. In fact, the text was an updated compendium of the astronomic and mathematical knowledge of the time, and had an openly practical and teaching purpose. Lacking the second volvelle and string pointer, metal pointer missing from final woodcut. Folio (ca. 230 x 410 mm). French manuscript on a single leaf of vellum. A list of the 103 conseillers and 15 huissiers (ushers of justice) of the Parlement of Paris in the year 1463. The list in two columns begins with the first president, Mathieu de Nanterre (1461-65), and his three deputies Yves de Stepeaux, Robert de Thiboust, and Jean de Boulenger, who would serve as first president from 1471 to 1481, followed by the four presidents of the Chambre des Enquêtes: Montdider, Le Sellier, Jean de la Réauté, and Jean Henry. Among the conseillers are members of important Parisian families of magistrates such as Burdelot, de Longueil, and de Montigny. Three greffiers (clerks), including the author of the manuscript, Jean Cheneteau, and four notaries complete the list. The huissiers follow in two columns in the lower margin, below Jean Cheneteau's signature. - First established by Louis IX of France on the Île de la cité in 1250 and regularized in a 1278 ordinance of Philip III, the Parlement de Paris would become one of the central legal and political institutions of the Ancien Régime. Juridically, the Parlement primarily functioned as an appellate court and court of cassation. Its political power arose from the parliamentary duty of enregistering all royal ordinances, letters patent, and edicts, which slowly evolved into a "droit de remonstrance" (right to remonstrate), as the Parlement could refuse to enregister royal legislation it deemed contrary to the interests of the people or the fundamental laws of the kingdom. The most significant political acts in its almost 540-year history were the opposition to the Jesuits that led to their expulsion from France in 1594, the revocation of the testament of Louis XIII in 1643, the Parlementary Fronde (1648/49), and the revocation of the testament of Louis XIV in 1715. While Louis XIV effectively weakened the political power of the Parlement between 1673 and 1715 by curtailing the Droit de remonstrance, the centralization of power and the disempowerment of the old nobility that marked French absolutism were strongly connected with the rise of the so-called "noblesse de robe", a class of educated magistrates, advocates, and merchants controlling the Parlement and other legal institutions. The most famous name connected both with the Parlement and the administration of Louis XIV is certainly Nicolas Fouquet, but important families such as the de Harlay, de Longueil (already present on this list), and Le Peletier might also be mentioned. - Minor tears and creases. A key work in the development of natural theology, whichattempts to reconcile twin sources of knowledge - the book of nature and the Bible - and, from that basis, argue that reason and philosophy are not incompatible with faith. Raymond of Sabunde (Ramon Sibiuda) (c.1385-1436) was a Catalan scholar and teacher of philosophy and medicine. From 1430 until his death he held a position at the University of Toulouse, during which time he wroteTheologia naturalis, between 1434 and 1436. The work was composed in a Catalan-influenced Latin. It was later translated into French by Montaigne, in 1569. Earlier editions of the work were printed in Deventer, Strasbourg and Venice, the first being undated but probably from around 1484. The printer, publisher and bookseller Anton Koberger (c.1440-1513) founded the first printing workshop in Nuremberg in 1470. He is best known as the publisher of the famous Nuremberg Chronicle. A RARE, RICHLY COLOURED ILLUSTRATED CALENDAR FROM THE AUGSBURG RENAISSANCE. Augsburg: [J. Sittich], January 1514. Quarto (210 x 155mm). Title within four-part woodcut border, 87 woodcuts, 10 of these large including 1 full page lunar figure, numerous initials, all in bright contemporary hand-colour, with working volvelles. Contemporary quarter pigskin over wooden boards. Printed calendars and almanacs became extremely popular in the fifteenth century and provided ordinary people with the basic knowledge required to plan their daily routines. The market for calendars was first tapped by Gutenburg, who published a calendar which calculated the times of new and full moons and planetary positions, with readings every two to three days. All earlier calendars, however, were superseded by those of Regiomontanus (1436-1476) whose calculations were far more accurate; he recorded several eclipses of the moon and his interest led him to make the important observation that longitude at sea could be determined by calculating lunar distances. Outstanding also is his observation of a comet in 1472, 210 years before it was "first" seen by Halley. One of the foremost scholars in mathematics and astronomy during this period, Regiomontanus was professor of astronomy at the University of Vienna before being appointed astronomer to King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. With funds from his patron and fellow scientist Bernard Walther, he built an observatory in Nuremberg in 1471, and in 1472 erected his own private press in order to publish his discoveries satisfactorily. One of the first to realize the impact printing would have in disseminating scientific knowledge, Regiomontanus' printing output included the first edition of his Calendar. His press was maintained until 1475 when he was summoned to Rome by Pope Sixtus IV to assist in the reform of the Calendar; his death at the age of 40 a year later brought his work to a premature end, a great loss to the developing science of astronomy. Provenance: 'Augsburg Anno 1514' (inscription on title) - contemporary annotations, including receipts in a 16th century hand in German -- 'Carl Schnizlein gekft 1858' (Adalbert Carl Friedrich Hellwig Conrad Schnizlein (1814-1868, German botanist and pharmacist; inscription on front pastedown).
