Founded in 1555 at Antwerp by Christoph Plantin, then a young bookbinder, who had arrived a few years earlier from France, it grew to become world famous. At his death (1589) Plantin was the greatest printer and publishers of his day. His son-in-law Moretus and seven generations of his descendants continued the business until 1876, when the firm was liquidated and the house with the printing shop and its treasures became a museum. These two volumes form a definitive history of the Officina Plantiniana. The first volume ('Christophe Plantin and the Moretuses: their lives and their world') outlines the lives and activities of Christophe Plantin and his successors, showing the Masters of the Officina at work against the social, political and cultural background of theirs time. The second volume ('The management of a printing and publishing house in renaissance and baroque') deals with the various aspects of the management of the printing press: buying paper, parchment, inks and other implements, casting types, the relations with authors, censors and how copyrights were protected by privileges, costing, wages and sales. The routine of the Plantinian printing press is described and discussed, the then common methods of book design and production set forth and analyzed, and proof-reading, binding and a number of minor processes dealt with." Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 2 volumes. 24.5 × 17 cm. xxii, 499; XXI, 632 pp. Illustrated. Original cloth with dust jackets. Dust jacket of volume one slightly faded and discoloured on the spine; otherwise in very good condition. At its peak, the Officina Plantiniana in Antwerp was the largest and most productive printing house in Europe. Christophe Plantin's operation churned out Bibles, atlases, and scholarly texts on a scale that left every other printer on the continent quietly envious. Understanding exactly how it worked is what Leon Voet spent his career on, and this two-volume set is the result. What sets it apart from a straight history is the depth of technical detail: the finances, the staff, the workflow, the business relationships. The kind of book that answers questions you didn't know you had about sixteenth-century printing. The standard work on the Plantinian press. Essential for book historians, collectors, and dealers (which, if you've read this far, almost certainly means you).

Black and white and colour photographic illustrations and plates, map, 54pp, bibliography, upper cover patchily faded, extremities trifle bumped, still a good paperback copy. 18.6 x 24.7 cm. "After printing with movable type was invented in Central Europe about the middle of the fifteenth century, the craft began to spread over the world almost at once, though it arrived in some areas much earlier than in others. This series aims to give a concise history of early printing in all parts of the world outside Continental Europe and Great Britain. Each monograph is written by a specialist on the usbject and covers one specific area. The series will be complete in approximately twenty monographs, equally divided between countries of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres." (Publisher's description.).
