Smith, a series of articles on a variety of subjects that are of interest to many Africana Collectors has been brought together in this book. Each chapter is the work of an expert in a particular field of Africana and its collecting and the book includes chapters on early printed maps of Africa, commemorative medals, Cape Almanacs, South African paper money, Xhosa beadwork, Johannesburgiana and coins of the South African Republic. Over twenty pages of relevant illustrations have been selected to support the text and an index has been included to facilitate reference. Africana Curiosities shows many of the interesting sides of Africana and will perhaps inspire Collectors to pioneer new fields and to undertake some serious research in their chosen areas and thus add a little more to our small fund of real knowledge of Africana.".…

Dustwrapper excepted, very good condition. "The Africana Museum was once aptly described as 'the City of Johannesburg's Treasure Chest'. Today it has become the cultural treasure of the people of South Africa. In its sadly limited space within the walls of the Johannesburg Library it houses some of the historic relics of the people of all races who have helped to build the Republic. . The great problem of all such museums is space. The Africana Museum can display only a fraction of its treasures. The rest are stored and brought out and displayed only occasionally. This book by Anna Smith, who helped to make the museum what it is today, draws aside the curtain to reveal some of these treasures and to tell you how they were acquired.".…

1st edition. 8vo. 189pp. B/w. frontispiece and illustrations. Original boards. Pictorial light green d/w. lettered in black, rubbed and slightly chipped to edges. ISBN 0949937193 US$15.

255 x 205 mm; side-stitched typewritten blue paper wrappers, with old masking tape reinforcement to spine; pp. (iii) + 15, printed rectos. Text largely in English, with some commentary in Afrikaans. Wrappers slightly curled; spine worn. Good. 'This exhibition includes only nineteenth century coloured prints from the Africana Museum for which the Museum also has original pictures on which the prints may have been based. Black and white prints and coloured prints of the 20th century have been omitted, except for prints after Butler in which there are both coloured and black and white pictures. With nineteenth century Africana prints it is not often possible to say with certainty that this is the picture from which this print was made. The engraver or lithographer often "improves" a picture; sketches were often redrawn by another artist before being passed to the engraver or lithographer; artists often made two or more copies of the same picture; and in the case of unsigned pictures it is often difficult to decide whether they are the originals from which the prints were made or copies of the prints. No claim is made that the originals shown are those on which the prints are based, although in most cases there can be little doubt. For instance, the evidence in favour of Burchell's water-colour being the original of the print "A View of Cape Town, Table Bay and Tygerberg" is so overwhelming as to be a certainty. The four Harris's are almost certainly the originals of the prints. The oil painting shown with the engraving "A view of the Cape of Good Hope" after Craig is probably the original from which Craig made a water-colour for the engraver, but is almost certainly not the original from which the engraver worked, and it is improbable that the oil was painted by Craig.' - From the Preface.…
