br., cop.fig. Zustand: BUONO. Hansen challenges both the long-standing myth of Chaucer as the tolerant, wise Father of English poetry and the recent arguments that Chaucer was a protofeminist, subversive of the misogyny of his day. Hansen argues that these mistaken interpretations inhibit readings of Chaucer that respond to feminist and other poststructuralist critiques of traditional literary scholarship. Hansen suggests that the woman's voice in Chaucer reflects an urgent problem of gender identity for two kinds of men, both feminized by fourteenth-century courtly conventions: those who love women, and those who traffic in stories about women. She maintains that Chaucer destabilizes the notion of fixed gender difference but then privileges masculine identity by reconstructing the feminine in orthodox ways. Hansen exhorts readers of Chaucer, and students of the history of gender, to approach Chaucer's fictions with a more sophisticated awareness of their complexity and timeliness. cm.15x23, pp.(10),301,(1), Berkeley - Los Angeles - Oxford, University of California Press cm.15x23, pp.(10),301,(1), br., cop.fig.

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - ein gutes Exemplar / a good copy. - Steven Cassedy takes aim at two of the most enduring myths of modern criticism: that it is secular, and that it is new and autonomous. He argues that although modern criticism is often forbiddingly scientific and technical, the modern critic remains something of a mystic. Every school of modern criticism, from structuralist to postmodernist, rests on faith in an "Eden," an irreducible belief, a myth such as the common myth that there is an intrinsic distinction between "poetic" language and "ordinary" language. The modern critic attempts to abandon all mystical faith; this is the "flight from Eden." But it is always in vain. Modern literary criticism and theory are traditionally assumed to have come from France, and relatively recently. In fact, according to Cassedy, the entire modern critical consciousness was already formed by the early twentieth century in the minds of writers who were primarily neither professional critics nor philosophers, but poets. Some were French Mallarmé, Valéry- but others were not: Rilke, Bely, and the Russian avant-garde poet Velimir Khlebnikov. In them we find the same Edenic faith, the same effort to abandon it, and the same failure of that effort. By exposing the hidden article of faith in modern schools of criticism, Cassedy demonstrates the futility of the flight from Eden. By showing how poets writing at the end of the last century and the beginning of this one anticipated modern criticism, he points to that criticism s ultimate dependence on the very field from which it has sought to declare its independence, "literature." / Contents A Note on Translation and Transliteration Introduction: How Literary Criticism Came into Its Own in This Country and How the Poets Got There First PART I. Zustand: Sehr gut. 216 S. Gebundene Ausgabe, sehr sauber und frisch. Hardbound copy. - As a theologian, Marjorie O'Rourke Boyle offers a unique perspective on Petrarch the poet as theologian. With her extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of the theological, historical, and literary contexts of her subject, she presents an entirely original and revisionary account of Petrarch's literary career. Typically, his prose and poetry have been divided - Latin and prose interpreted by historians, and the vernacular and poetry interpreted by literary critics. Petrarch the plaintive lover is so familiar a figure that he has solidified into Petrarchism. Yet in his criticism of the Avignon papacy the lyricist of love struck a political chord. As poet laureate he assumed a prophetic vocation in scriptural and classical traditions; his was the sacral task of articulating the civic destiny and so of fostering patriotic zeal. Petrarch asserted that he invented verse by a genius divinely endowed. Petrarch's Genius examines how he justified and developed this vocation. Boyle argues that his entire oeuvre - his prose and his poetry - reflects his Christian humanism and constitutes his mission to develop a theological poetics. Boyle's scholarship is rich and compelling. Her study of Petrarch will provoke reinterpretations of the way humanism related classical literature, philosophy, and religion to Christianity. Petrarch's Genius is an important book that deserves to be read by scholars of religion, history, literature, and art. (Klappentext). Zustand: Gut. Hellenistic Culture & Society ; 9. XVI, 293 p., ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed dust jacket, otherwise very good. / Leicht beriebener Schutzumschlag, sonst sehr gut. - Why are scholars looking at the same evidence and coming up with fresh conclusions? During the past decade or two, the Hellenistic Age has come to enjoy extraordinary attention as an area of study. The chief aim of the 1988 conference from which this volume derives was to facilitate an exchange of ideas on Hellenistic history and culture and to make the exchange as stimulating as possible by bringing into confrontation scholars whose opinions conflicted. Unexpectedly, the conference s confrontations revealed not conflict but converging lines of research that formed a new picture of the great variegated Hellenistic mosaic. Today s scholars, unlike their predecessors, have an ingrained distrust not only of totalitarianism but of all ideological politics whatsoever; indeed, even the validity of principles as such is questioned. Egalitarianism and multiculturalism have rendered "elitist" a pejorative term. Feminism, similarly, is undermining traditional male assumptions in a society that also contrives to be more preoccupied with sex than any civilization since that of Julio-Claudian Rome. Such present concerns are reflected in shifting scholarly assessments: the Hellenistic period, once simplistically labeled decadent, is now recognized for some outstanding intellectual and cultural achievements; interest in centers of power has shifted to an interest in events on the peripheries of the Hellenistic empires; the long-ignored technologies of the Hellenistic world can no longer be dismissed as unworthy of study by scholars no less class-bound than their ancient counterparts. The currently fashionable march toward multiculturalism has consciously down graded the Western, Greco-Roman tradition as such, allowing the Nubians, Bactrians, and other subject peoples of the time to interest scholars not just as recipients of Graeco-Roman culture, but as worthy of study in their own right. History, and historians, like Heracleitus river, never stand still: revaluation of the Hellenistic era was overdue. The essays in this volume share a collective sense of excitement and discovery, a sparking of fresh ideas, generated by the sharing of individual explorations. They are a rewarding beginning to the reexploration of a fascinatingly complex age. - Peter Green is Dougherty Centennial Professor of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. A novelist and translator as well as a scholar, he is the author of many books, including Alexander to Actium: The Historical Evolution of the Hellenistic Age (1990). - Contributors: S. M. In his poetic essay on the evolution of the idea of luxury and art, Rémy Saisselin plots their intersection through precise, witty examples. Saisselin convincingly describes the development of our modern taste, ultimately the successor of the more spiritual and grand baroque goût. His analysis both illuminates and distinguishes between eighteenth-century and modern varieties of conspicuous consumption. In this elegant and persuasive Pascalian disquisition, Saisselin depicts the rise of luxe as an escape from ennui, especially for its major proponents like Madame de Pompadour. Further, the author shows that in the eighteenth century, for the first time in European history, a significantly large class of wealthy, leisured people emerged to make art, luxury, and the avoidance of boredom more widespread preoccupations than previously thought. By drawing on a wide variety of contexts, Saisselin provides a lucid picture of the first phases in the emergence of a specifically bourgeois taste arising from the contradictions between luxury and economic theory. / Contents Introduction 1. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Dust jacket a bit light-margined, otherwise very good and clean. - This is a detailed study of all available Attic inscriptions for the last real period of independence for the Athenians. Inscriptions comprise a major primary source for this period. Tracy has arranged them by individual letter-cutter and has provided photographs of all hands catalogued. In presenting the dossiers of the cutters, he offers many new readings, redatings, and interpretations. A number of fragments from the Athenian Agora are here presented for the first time. This study will serve as a sourcebook for the inscriptions of 229 to 86 and is particularly important for the evidence it offers on the dating of the texts. The photographs and descriptions of the lettering of thirtyeight cutters at work in the period will provide a guide for others dealing with late Hellenistic Attic inscriptions. In addition, the trends in lettering and letter-cutting identified by Tracy provide insights into the history of the period and into the craft of letter-cutting. - Wikipedia: Stephen Victor Tracy (born 1941) is an American scholar of Classics specializing in ancient Greek Epigraphy. Inscriptions are one of the most important classes of primary evidence that comes down to us from antiquity. Tracy is best known for devising a method for recognizing the work of individual inscribers. It was long thought that the intractability of the medium (hammer and chisel on marble) made this impossible. But by treating the inscribed letters as a kind of handwriting he has been able to establish careers for many cutters, to join discrete fragments, to date inscriptions more accurately than in the past, and often thereby make it possible to reach a new understanding of historical events. Here, a leading exponent of cultural materialism reassesses the scope of dissidence and control. Through discussions of writings by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Sidney, and Donne, Sinfield demonstrates that the early-modern state, Christianity, and the cultural apparatus could not but allow space to challenging voices, despite an ideology of unity and explicit violence. During the years 1614 1617 a series of conflicts occurred in France, resulting from the struggle for domination of Louis XIII s government. In response more than twelve hundred pamphlets some printed in as many as eighteen editions were produced and distributed. These pamphlets constituted the political press of the period, offering the only significant published source of news and commentary. Sawyer examines key aspects of the impact of pamphleteering: the composition of the targeted public and the ways in which pamphlets were designed to affect its various segments, the interaction of pamphlet printing and political action at court and in the provinces, and the influence of the rhetoric and assumptions in pamphlets on the evolution of the French state. His analysis provides new and valuable insights into the language and practice of politics. Sawyer concludes that the efforts of royal ministers to control political communication did much to shape French political culture. The resulting distortions of public discourse facilitated a spectacular growth of royal power and monarchist ideology and influenced the subsequent history of French politics well into the Revolutionary era.
