A bright clean copy wi…th the fold out Whale plate with some early repairs to tears, inserted loose in the book. Both editions of this works are noted for their inclusion of John Narborough's account of his voyage through the Straits of Magellan into the Pacific and for recording one of the earliest accounts in English of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage upon which he discovered both Tasmania and New Zealand. The second edition differs from the first in that it adds an introduction and a supplement which includes some descriptions short notes on other period voyages. A very good hospital copy with the title page and the text invery nice original condition to make up if the 3 folding maps turn up.

Two fascinating early nineteenth-century pamphlets, both undated and relating to The Despard Plot to assassinate George III, foil…ed in 1802. Colonel Edward Marcus Despard was a former colonial administrator and the alleged ringlead of the The Despard Plot to assassinate George III. He was tried and executed for the crime in 1803, with much public outcry. Rebound in modern, paper covered boards with end papers renewed, original rear blank retained. Trial of Col. Despard with a hand coloured, folded frontispiece engraving of the trial. Collated, complete. The first pamphlet, The Memoirs of Miss Louisa Mansell, is a first person account of young woman who claims to be the lover of Colonel Despard. She alleges to have been cruelly tricked by a mysterious Miss Holmes, into meeting with Despard and loosing her virginity to him for thirty pounds. She then claims to have temporarily accompanied him to Fleet Prison. There is no record of this pamphlet on the ESTC or Library Hub Discover. Furthermore, there is no historical record of Despard ever taking a mistress. It is likely that this is a ficticious pamphlet, either invented to discredit Colonel Despard after his death and dissuade further rebellion, or simply produced to feed the popular demand for mass-produced 'penny prints' or, sensationalised and embellished criminal accounts. Despard was in fact married to Catherine Gordon, the daughter of a black free woman from Jamaica, with whom he had one son, James. She played an active role in garnering support for the conspiritors during their imprisonment and became a vital link between the prisoners and their sympathizers. Gordon was suspected to have smuggled contraband into the prison during visits to her husband, but the authorities were too afraid to search her. The second pamphlet, The Trial at Large of Col. Despard, also falls into the genre of the 'penny prints', documenting the trial day by day. It includes the glowing character testimony of Despard by Lord Admiral Nelson, a close friend and colleague of the accused. Despite the prosecution failing to produce substantial physcial evidence of the plot, Despard was execute on 21 February 1803, in front of crowd of approximately 20,000. Together, these pieces provide a fascinating insight into the nineteenth-century world of sensational, cheap print. Rebound in modern, paper covered boards with end papers renewed, original rear blank retained. Externally, excellent. With only very slight handling marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound, though the odd slight strain. Pages are age toned with the occasional handling mark or small closed tear to extremities. 'The book is of greatest importance to an Australian collection, as it contains one of the earliest English accounts of Abel Janszoon Tasman's famous voyage of 1642 from Batavia, in which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and visited Tonga and Fiji' (Hill). An English naval commander, (Rear-Admiral Sir) John Narborough (c.16401688) served with distinction in the Anglo-Dutch Wars and against the Barbary Coast pirates. After peace was declared with the Dutch, Narborough was given the command of an expedition to the South Seas departing England on 26 September 1669, before sailing through the Straits of Magellan and into the Pacific in October of the following year. His charts of the Straits of Magellan were a great improvement on those of previous navigators and were used by Bulkeley and Cummins following the wreck of the Wager. Bookplate of Godfrey Bosville.

A poetical miscellany for young readers, by James Greenwood (1683?-1737), who at this point was a teacher at a boarding school in Woodford, Essex. I…n 1721 he became a master at St. Paul's School in London, where he remained until his death; he published a number of popular grammars, vocabularies, and other pedagogical works. Included here are passages from Katherine Philips, Milton, Dryden, Cowley, Waller, Denham, Prior, Etherege, Isaac Watts, and Swift, along with a number of occasional poems by unidentified hands, presumably those 'never before printed'. The final poems go back further into poetical history, with poems by Spenser and Chaucer. At the end is a short section of notes, and a 38-page alphabetical index of difficult words. The dedication is to nine young ladies, very likely former pupils, all the daughters of influential men such as Sir Richard Child and Sir Caesar Child, who were Essex gentlemen, and Peter Godfrey, MP for the city of London. Case 304; Alston III, 503. The same sheets were reissued in 1722 and 1731 as the supposed second and third editions as might be expected, each is progressively rarer than the last.
