Both editions of this works are noted for their inclusion of John Narborough's account of his voyage through the Straits of Magellan into the Pacific and for recording one of the earliest accounts in English of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage upon which he discovered both Tasmania and New Zealand. The second edition differs from the first in that it adds an introduction and a supplement which includes some descriptions short notes on other period voyages. A very good hospital copy with the title page and the text invery nice original condition to make up if the 3 folding maps turn up.

The very scarce second edition of Sir John Narborough's secretive voyage in the South Seas, coupled wit…h accounts of Captain Abel Tasman's discoveries of Tasmania and New Zealand, Captain John Wood's attempt to discover a north-east passage to China, and Friedrich Martens' observations made in Greenland.This work is of particular interest due to the the presence of the scarce early account of Tasman's famous voyage of 1642, in which he visited Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Tonga, discovering Tasmania and New Zealand. Extracts taken from Tasman's own journal describe this expedition.The remaining journey's are narrated in first person from unidentified journals, with the introduction remarking on 'the advantages of keeping judicious journals in voyages and itineraries' due to the 'improvement of Geography, Hydrography, Astronomy, Natural and Moral History', which these accounts can afford later readers.With nineteen beautifully illustrated plates, four of which are folding. T86883A fascinating and very scarce collection of first hand accounts of some of the seventeenth century's most important and pioneering voyages and discoveries. Pages generally clean, with the odd spot or light handling mark. The occasional instance of worming throughout, most prominent to pages 17-32, where roughly four words per page are affected. He successfully proved that trade with South America could be profitable without Spanish oversight, which influenced Britain's foreign policy for the next half century. This edition is more desirable with the additional chart of the western and southern oceans, not present in the first edition, and added text relating to whaling off Greenland. Watford Printers to the Royal S…ociety, Edited by Sir Tancred Robinson, and dedicated to Samuel Pepys, this compilation of four voyages is known chiefly for its inclusion of John Narborough's account of his voyage through the Straits of Magellan into the Pacific. Robinson's introduction seeks to place his volume in the context of the likes of Hakluyt and Ramusio and includes a brief history of previous explorers such as Magellan, Drake, Quiros, Schouten, Hawkins, Barentz, Sharp et al. Hill states that this work is of "particular interest because of its description of Narborough's passage in the Batchelour through the Straits of Magellen and into the South Pacific to Chile, which was much read by later navigators. Narbrough sailed in 1669 with a commission to explore the west coast of the Americas and to look for the western opening of the North-west passage. He also tried to trade in Chile but failed in this endeavour and turned back at Valdivia. His charts of the Strait of Magellan were superior to older ones." Narborough's account is 129pp. The work is of added interest as it includes one of the earliest accounts in English of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage upon which he discovered both Tasmania and New Zealand. He also made stops at Tonga and Fiji. There are two further accounts. The first is a search for the north-east passage by John Wood, who sought a passage to Asia in 1676. He sailed on the Speedwell and was accompanied by William Flawes on the Properous. Their passage was prevented by pack ice at 75'59N. They reached the west coast of Nova Zembla where the Speedwell was wrecked. The crew survived the nine-day wait for the Prosperous and were rescued and returned to England.
