In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'UFOs became part of our cultural landscape in 1947, and they've been with us ever since. Debunked innumerable times, they refuse to go away. Made the subject of great expectations by their believers, they invariably disappoint. They've been called a myth, both in disparagement and, more properly, in appreciation of their power and significance. This book argues that they are actually a mythology, as gripping and profound as the great mythologies of antiquity to which they're linked. The question it asks about them is not, 'What are they ' nor 'Where do they come from ' but 'What do they mean ' Halperin begins his exploration with his own longish teenage foray into the UFOs that he began to believe in as his mother lay dying of cancer. Despite the fact that he was only a high school student, Halperin joined and then became the director of 'New Jersey Association on Aerial Phenomena' (NJAAP), an organization of amateur observers with members across the States. He goes on to revisit a range of famous cases of UFO sightings and abductions while introducing his own approach, which is informed by the study of religion, folklore, and Jungian psychology. Ultimately arguing for UFOs as evidence of the inner trauma of individuals as well as entire societies, he posits that the rise of the UFO in post-World War II America coincides with that moment in the nuclear age when we first became capable of imagining our death as a species'--.

At its peak in the twentieth century, the population numbered around 100,000; today about 25,000 Jews live in Iran. Between Iran and Zion offers the first history of this vibrant community over the course of the last century, from the 1905 Constitutional Revolution through the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Over this period, Iranian Jews grew from a peripheral community into a prominent one that has made clear impacts on daily life in Iran.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At the turn of the twentieth century, thousands of Central Asians made the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Traveling long distances, many lived for extended periods in Ottoman cities dotting the routes. Though technically foreigners, these Muslim colonial subjects often blurred the lines between pilgrims and migrants. Not quite Ottoman, and not quite foreign, Central Asians became the sultan's spiritual subjects. Their status was continually negotiated by Ottoman statesmen as attempts to exclude foreign Muslim nationals from the body politic were compromised by a changing international legal order and the caliphate's ecumenical claims.

Yet they persist throughout the modern democratized world. Looking at the institutional change in Japan's party system as a comparative model, Daniel M. Historically this solidarity has been difficult to see because Asian and Latinx immigrants have often been described in opposing terms of desirability (model minority versus 'illegal' immigrant). However, by looking at similarities in Latinx and Asian American literatures, Long Le-Khac reveals their entangled histories and the ways in which these groups have formed in relation to one another'--.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Territorial disputes are one of the main sources of tension in Northeast Asia. Disputes often arise out of a widely shared public perception that the region in question is of the utmost importance to the nation. That's frequently not the case, at least when it comes to socio-political and economic factors. The tiny and remote islets, known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, for instance, have no such value. In fact, in the early 1960s, both Japanese and Korean negotiators recognized their insignificance and considered blowing them up rather than resolving their ownership. Today, citizens and groups in both countries have mounted sustained campaigns to protect the islets as the heart of the nation, forcing politicians who would rather ignore the islets altogether to take them into account in their bilateral relationship. Such disputes are taking place throughout the region and have wide-ranging domestic and international consequences. Focusing on non-state actors rather than political elites, Alexander Bukh explains how and why apparently inconsequential territories become central to national and nationalist discourse. These Islands Are Ours draws on a vast array of primary research in four languages, particularly reports produced by the actors, interviews, and governmental data to challenge conventional wisdom. Bukh shows that public campaigns centering on territorial disputes are not about the territory in question. Territorial disputes that were historically unimportant, can become salient when non-state actors bring the issue to the fore of domestic political discourse. This book studies the origins and transformation of such campaigns in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, finding that they originate during times of economic, social, or political crisis. Demands from the public and non-state groups to recover or protect the territory are a rhetorical device used to criticize the perceived failures of the state during periods of upheaval. Because of the widely shared agreement that territory is of utmost importance to the state, disputed territory can be easily turned to this purpose. An unintended consequence of these campaigns is that, as a territory is increasingly identified as a national treasure, or of central value to state wholeness, it emerges as a symbol of national identity. These Islands Are Ours gives us a new way to understand the nature of territorial disputes and how they inform national identities by exploring their social construction, amplification, and ideological consequences'--.
