My son, an electrical engineering student, seems almost to take for granted the innovations that leave me somewhat awestruck at times. Electronic circuit designers delight in packing more punch into less volume, while reminding us that their job has become increasingly challenging. The lay person also has learned from the media that the industry has been working wonders in shrinking the transistor and expanding the power of 'the chip. ' Much attention is focussed on the silicon and on the marvelous production and entertainment tools we now see in our offices and homes. Between the silicon and the end product lies the less publicized world of circuit-level packaging. We leave it to a cadre of technologists to take the schematics and parts lists and to develop the processes that tum the designers' concepts into physical reality. And while the silicon transistor is shrinking, the engineering challenges of packaging multiple chips and associated components into increasingly dense subsystems are growing. Further, the transistor may have to function without failure through severe industrial or military environments over the lifetime of the product.

Neuware - This volume contains the selected papers of the first I.D.M.M.E. conference on 'Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering', held in Nantes from 15-17 April 1996. Its objective was to discuss the questions related to the definition of the optimal design and manufacturing processes and to their integration through coherent methodologies in adapted environments. The initiative of the Conference and the organization thereof, is mainly due to the efforts of the french PRIMECA group (Pool of Computer Resources for Mechanics) started eight years ago. We were able to attract the internationru community with the support of the International Institution for Production Engineering Research (C.I.R.P.). The conference brought together two hundred and fifty specialists from around the world. About ninety papers and twenty posters were presented covering three main topics : optimization and evaluation of the product design process, optimization and evaluation of the manufacturing systems and methodological aspects.

In accordance with the pure tradition of the Saint James way, 'pilgrims' from all over the world come to meet together in Santiago. Although with a common interest (double stars), this meeting was a multidisciplinary one, since scientists with different backgrounds participated in it. As a matter of fact, we think that this is the first workshop jointly supported by IAU Commissions 7 (Celestial mechanics) and 26 (Double and multiple stars). It is our belief that this meeting will be the origin of a more close relations and common research. This meeting was held under the invitation of the University of Santiago de Compostela to commemorate its fifth centenary, and organized by the Astronomical Observatory named after its founder, Ramon M. Aller, who made significant contributions in the study of visual double stars, and was one of the pioneers who put the seeds of the present blossoming of Astronomy in Spain. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Welcome to IWQOS'97 in New York City! Over the past several years, there has been a considerable amount of research within the field of Quality of Service (QOS). Much of that work has taken place within the context of QOS support for distributed multimedia systems, operating systems, transport subsystems, networks, devices and formal languages. The objective of the Fifth International Workshop on Quality of Service (IWQOS) is to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners working in all facets of QOS research. While many workshops and conferences offer technical sessions on the topic QOS, none other than IWQOS, provide a single-track workshop dedicated to QOS research. The theme of IWQOS'97 is building QOS into distributed systems. Implicit in that theme is the notion that the QOS community should now focus on discussing results from actual implementations of their work. As QOS research moves from theory to practice, we are interested in gauging the impact of ideas discussed at previous workshops on development of actual systems. While we are interested in experimental results, IWQOS remains a forum for fresh and innovative ideas emerging in the field. As a result of this, authors were solicited to provide experimental research (long) papers and more speculative position (short) statements for consideration. We think we have a great invited and technical program lined up for you this year. The program reflects the Program Committees desire to hear about experiment results, controversial QOS subjects and retrospectives on where we are and where we are going.
