Connections to the direct spatial averaging - proach of Murdoch and Hardy are exposed and the troublesome sources of non-uniqueness of the stress tensor are identi ed. These contrast the various de nitions of stress, - cluding convergence questions related to the size of the domain over which spatial averaging is performed. Although the surface fluxes are one of the main driving factors for the daily variation of the ABL, an ABL description is only complete if its vertical structure is analyzed and determined. Satellite information is available covering large areas, but it has only limited temporal resolution and lacks sufficient vertical resolution. These are to a considerable extent interwoven with concerns about the entire school curriculum and its reception by students. The rst problem is the increasing intellectual isolation of science from the other subjects in the school curriculum. Science is too often still taught didactically as a collection of pre-determined truths about which there can be no dispute. As a con- quence, many students do not feel any ¿ownership¿ of these ideas. Most other school subjects do somewhat better in these regards. For example, in language classes, s- dents suggest different interpretations of a text and then debate the relative merits of the cases being put forward. Moreover, ideas that are of use in science are presented to students elsewhere and then re-taught, often using different terminology, in s- ence. IPY 2007¿2008, the fourth program of its kind, followed in the footsteps of its predecessors, the first IPY in 1882¿1883, the second IPY in 1932¿1933, and the third IPY (later renamed to ¿International Geophysical Year¿ or IGY) in 1957¿1958.
