The philosophy of art is never theless dependent upon the existence of appreciation and criticism because it is out of reflection upon these that the uniquely philosophical problems of art arise, problems that reflect puzzlement about what is involved in under standing, enjoying, describing, and evaluating works of art. Hence the philo sophy of art must presuppose at least some measure of understanding and appreciation of particular works of art and if such understanding and appre ciation are lacking the philosopher is in no position to supply them. It can not be a philosophical task to undertake a Defense of Poesie against either the philistine or the tyrant. The philosopher is not the one to convince us that art is a Good Thing, that paintings are worth looking at, poems worth reading, and music worth listening to, if for no other reason than that philo sophical theory and argument are no substitute for taste and sensibility. They were studied by George Herbert Mead as eruptive 'natural' events constituting a social temporality. Alfred SchUtz described them as 'explosions' of the individual actor's anticipatory action patterns. Talcott Parsons attempted to grasp social inconsistencies into his frame of 'pattern variables,' while Erving Goffman dealt with them as disruptions of 'fostered impressions of reality' maintained by one or the other dominant team. The present study traces these divergent approaches back to various un checked assumptions concerning the structure and the constitution of social types. Thus, to further clarify the relationship between social types and the relevance structure of interactional situations has been my first objective. This initially rather limited intention widened when the role of social incon sistencies for analysing the differences between play, game, and social action proper in the immediate context of social interaction became apparent. It indicates that exuberance is not a sufficient sub stitute for scholarship, that, for better or for worse, every scholar today must be something of a specialist. But when any great writer and great thinker reaches out and grasps the whole of human life, the study of his work transcends specialization. And while exuberance may not replace scholarship, it may accompany it. Most of my work has been done in the history of political philosophy. I have dared to overstep departmental boundaries, because I believe that Shakespeare has something to say to political philosophy. I am not the first to express this view. It is not primarily meant to be an introduction to Husserl's thought, but can serve this purpose because of the nature of this concept. The doctrine of constitution deals with a philosophical problem that is fairly easy to grasp, and yet is central enough in the philosophy of Husserl to provide a con venient viewpoint from which other concepts and problems can be considered and understood. Husserl's thoughts on the phe nomenological reduction, on temporality, on perception, on evi dence, can all be integrated into a coherent pattern if we study them in their rapport with the concept of constitution. Further more, the concept of constitution is used by Husserl as an ex planatory schema: in giving the constitution of an object, Husserl feels he is giving the philosophical explanation of such an object. Thus in our discussion of constitution, we are studying the explanatory power of phenomenology, and in relating other phenomenological concepts to the concept of constitution, we are studying what they contribute to the philosophical expla nation that phenomenology attempts to furnish. Neuware -In the last 25 years, the concept of information has played a crucial role in communication theory, so much so that the terms information theory and communication theory are sometimes used almost interchangeably. It seems to us, however, that the notion of information is also destined to render valuable services to the student of induction and probability, of learning and reinforcement, of semantic meaning and deductive inference, as~well as of scientific method in general. The present volume is an attempt to illustrate some of these uses of information concepts. In 'On Semantic Information' Hintikka summarizes some of his and his associates' recent work on information and induction, and comments briefly on its philosophical suggestions. Jamison surveys from the sub jectivistic point of view some recent results in 'Bayesian Information Usage'. Rosenkrantz analyzes the information obtained by experimen tation from the Bayesian and Neyman-Pearson standpoints, and also from the standpoint of entropy and related concepts. The much-debated principle of total evidence prompts Hilpinen to examine the problem of measuring the information yield of observations in his paper 'On the Information Provided by Observations'. Pietarinen addresses himself to the more general task of evaluating the systematizing ('explanatory') power of hypotheses and theories, a task which quickly leads him to information concepts. Domotor develops a qualitative theory of information and entropy. Neuware -The works of Simon Stevin are most interesting for the history of science, because they have such a wide scope and reflect so clearly the development of scientific knowledge around 1600 in central Europe. The recent publi cation of his Principal Works, with an English translation, has again attracted attention to his fascinating personality. The book on Stevin by Professor E. J. Dijksterhuis, originally published in the Dutch language, is an excellent introduction to the life and works of this remarkable Netherlander. Dijksterhuis prepared a somewhat condensed English edition, adapted to the foreign reader. Because of his untimely death, publication had to be deferred until the undersigned were able to undertake the editorial work. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, Amsterdam, allowed a grant, through which a linguistic revision of the text was made possible. We are very grateful to Miss C. EINLEITUNG Das Nichtgesagte eines Fragmentes gehört zu dem, was es sagt. Zu dem, was das Fragment Sein und Zeit (SZ) sagt, gehört das Offenbleiben einer Reihe von Fragen. Eine dieser Fragen lautet: 'Was besagt ontologisch Wert' Auf dem Boden der materialen Wertethik versteht sich diese Frage als eine nach der sittlichen Seinsweise der Person. Dies nicht nur, weil die Person ein aus gezeichneter Träger von bestimmten Wertarten ist, sondern weil zum Menschen überhaupt - gleich wie man ihn ontologisch freilegt - personales Wertsein gehört. Neuware -Die vorliegende Arbeit ist die umgearbeitete Fassung einer Disser tation, die im Sommersemester 1964 von der Philosophischen Fa kultiit der Universitat KOln angenommen wurde. In der Dissertation standen die beiden folgenden Problembereiche im Zentrum der Betrachtung: die Funktion des teleologischen Geschichtsdenkens flir die transzendentale Phanomenologie und Husserls Riickgang auf die vorwissenschaftliche Lebenswelt, so wie er sich aus der Epoche von den objektiven Wissenschaften ergibt. Diese Themen sind in die umfassenderen Zusammenhange dieser Untersuchung eingegangen. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, Husserls Spatwerk in seiner Ein heitlichkeit und Geschlossenheit aus dem Blickpunkt des Riick ganges von der objektiven Wissenschaft auf die Lebenswelt in einer neuen Perspektive sichtbar werden zu lassen. Darauf weist uns schon die Mehrheit verschiedener Zahlworter hin, die in der Sprache des gewohnlichen Lebens auftreten und von den Grammatikern unter 5 folgenden Titeln aufgefiihrt zu werden pflegen: die Anzahlen oder Grundzahlen (numeralia cardinalia), die Ordnungszahlen (n. ordinalia), die Gattungszahlen (n. specialia), die Wiederho lungszahlen (n. iterativa), die Vervielfaltigungszahlen (n. multi plicativa) und die Bruchzahlen (n. partitiva). DaB die Anzahlen 10 als die ersten in dieser Reihe genannt werden, beruht ebenso wie die charakteristischen N amen, die sie sonst tragen - Grund- oder Kardinalzahlen -, nicht auf bloBer Konvention. Sie nehmen sprachlich eine bevorzugte SteHung dadurch ein, daB die samt lichen iibrigen Zahlworter nur durch geringe Modifikationen aus 15 den Anzahlwortern hervorgehen (z. B. zwei, zweiter, zweierlei, zweifach, zweimal, zweitel). Die letzteren sind also wahrhafte Grundzahlworter. Die Sprache leitet uns hiermit auf den Gedan ken hin, es mochten auch die korrespondierenden Beg r iff e samtlich in einem analogen Abhangigkeitsverhaltnisse stehen 20 zu denen der Anzahlen und gewisse inhaltsreichere Gedanken vor steHen, in welchen die Anzahlen bloBe Bestandteile bilden. Die einfachste Uberlegung scheint dies zu bestatigen. So handelt es sich bei den Gattungszahlen (einerlei, zweierlei usw. ) um eine Anzahl von Verschiedenheiten innerhalb einer Gattung; bei den Wieder- 25 holungszahlen (einmal, zweimal usw. ) um die Anzahl einer Wiederholung.
