The main aim of the Symposium was to discuss the basic principles of damage growth and fracture processes in different types of composites: ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites, cement and bituminous composites and wood. Nowadays, it is widely recognized that important macroscopic properties like the macroscopic stiffness and strength, are governed by processes that occur at one to several scales below the level of observation starting from nanoscale. Understanding how these processes influence the reduction of stiffness and strength is essential for the analysis of existing and the design of improved composite materials. The study of how these various length scales can be linked together or taken into account simultaneously is particular attractive for composite materials, since they have a well-defined structure at the nano, micro and meso-levels. The well-defined microstructural level can be associated with small particles or fibres, while the individual laminae can be indentified at the mesoscopic level. Moreover, the advances in multiscale modelling of damage and fracture processes to the description of the complete constitutive behaviour in composites which do not have a very well-defined microstructure, e.g. cementitious, bitumous composites and wood was analysed.

Wohlgemerkt, hierbei geht es um die Verarbeitung im Gegensatz zur Bearbeitung!!! Die Herangehensweise der Autoren ist lösungsorientiert und entwickelt sich sowohl aus mathematischer Schreibweise und abstrakten Algorithmen als auch aus konkreten Java-Programmen für Anwendbarkeit und konkrete Umsetzung. Mathematische Kenntnisse sind hilfreich, ebenso wie grundlegende Programmierkenntnisse, vorzugsweise in Java. Der Aufbau des Buchs eignet sich insbesondere als Studienbegleiter oder -planer, was natürlich auch die Grundlagen für das Selbststudium beinhaltet. Unterstützend steht dazu auch die Website zum Buch zur Verfügung. Als Ausgangsprogramm für das Buch dient das frei verfügbare ImageJ -- einerseits ein fertiges Werkzeug zur Darstellung und interaktiven Manipulation von Bildern, andererseits lässt es sich extrem einfach durch Softwarekomponenten erweitern. Also Ideal. Die vorgestellten Themen umfassen einen Einstieg in die Grundlagen digitaler Bilder und natürlich ImageJ sowie Histogramme, Punktoperationen, Filter, Kanten und Konturen, das Auffinden von Eckpunkten, Detektion einfacher Kurven, morphologische Filter, Regionen und Binärbilder bis hin zum Bildvergleich. Im Anhang befindet sich dann noch die mathematischen Notationen, Java-Notizen sowie eine ImageJ-Kurzreferenz und der Source Code. Eine trockene Materie gut und spannend aufbereitet, pädagogisch überzeugend und inhaltlich bestechendDigitale Bildverarbeitung - Eine Einführung mit Java und ImageJ ist ein offener Geheimtipp in Spezialistenkreisen. Die Autoren geben eine fundierte Einführung in die wichtigsten Methoden der digitalen Bildverarbeitung. Dabei steht die praktische Anwendbarkeit im Vordergrund, formale und mathematische Aspekte sind auf das Wesentliche reduziert, ohne dabei auf eine präzise und konsistente Vorgehensweise zu verzichten. Der Text eignet sich als detaillierte Referenz für Praktiker und Anwender gängiger Verfahren der digitalen Bildverarbeitung, z.B. in der Medientechnik, der Robotik, der Medizin oder der Materialprüfung sowie zum Studium und Selbsstudium. Praktische Übungsaufgaben runden die Darstellung ab. Das Buch basiert auf der in Java implementierten und frei verfügbaren Bildverarbeitungsumgebung ImageJ. Ich habe das Buch als Kursbuch für eine einsemestriege Einführungsveranstaltung in die digitale Bildverarbeitung an einer Fachhochschule verwendet und damit sehr gute Erfahrungen gemacht. Auch die Studierenden waren sehr zufrieden. Deshalb empfehle ich das Buch an dieser Stelle weiter. Es gibt eine praxisnahe Einführung in die digitale Bildverarbeitung, wobei die vielen Java-Beispiele das Verständnis sehr gut fördern. Softwareseitig setzt das Buch auf ImageJ, einer kostenlos verfügbaren Java-Software zur Bildverarbeitung mit übersichtlicher GUI. Diese erlaubt es, sowohl Bilder mit gegebenen Funktionen zu bearbeiten, als auch Java-Plugins einzubinden. Viele Plugins können von der entsprechenden Web-Seite zur Software heruntergeladen werden. Sehr vorteilhaft ist aber vor allem, dass man so eigene Algorithmen programmieren und sehr einfach einbinden kann. Auch das Buch hat seine eigene Web-Seite, auf der u.a. sämtliche Grafiken, Tabellen und Formeln sowie der Source-Code heruntergeladen werden kann. Dies ist insbesondere für Dozenten sehr hilfreich.
