Annotated throughout in a contemporary hand, making brief additions to entries and giving notes of prices fetched at auction (for example, 'at Kings 1 - 11. 6 | Gs. 2. 8. 0'. and 'W L with the Book of prints } 3: 3: 0 - | 2: 14: 0 Edward Brother to Edmd Kneeling'). Loosely inserted is a corrected typescript (possibly by Wilkinson), headed 'PREFACE: (Authors) [to a book on 'the glories of great palaces'?]' and written in an entertaining style, with reference 'the unscientific picture-lover, whose quiet waters of contemplation will be stirred by the squalls of controversy'.

Minimal toning or offsetting from engravings, occasional light spotting, I: engraved frontispiece, title and first leaf somewhat foxed, III: slight spotting to a couple of gatherings, Contemporary polished calf, marbled endpapers, double gilt ruled, blind-tooled decorative roll, raised bands, spine gilt and gilt-lettered, inner edges gilt, all edges marbled, joints, head and foot of spine a trifle rubbed with occasional very minor loss. Remarkably fresh and clean, uniformly bound set of this much celebrated, deluxe, student edition of Virgil, by C.G. Heyne. He issued four 'incomparable editions' (Dibdin), this being the London reprint of the Leipzig edition of 1788. In addition to the received Vergilian canon, it includes indexes and an incredibly thorough chronological list of all Virgil editions ever printed. This is probably one of the copies on large paper, in royal octavo, ornamented with beautiful vignettes, mentioned by Dibdin. Dibdin (4th ed.) II, p.559; Schweiger II, 1181.

The material included here aligns very much with his ideas of 'New Physiology', including a system of classification based on 'matter' and separate laws and principles for governing dead or common matter (chemistry) vs living matter (physiology). Rebacked in a modern half cloth, with marbled boards. With the title label from the original backstrip loosely inserted. Externally, very smart indeed, with minimal signs of shelf wear. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Fourth Edition. 15-volume set (complete). A well-preserved set of George Steevens' 1793 15-Volume edition of Shakespeare's works, in original full calf. The leather has become dry and cracked with age, and there is some chipping and rubbing to the corners of the boards and heads and feet of the spines, but the binding remains fully intact. The hinges and joints of several volumes are cracked, but holding well. The front board of Volume 3 has been neatly re-attached with linen hinges. Book pages have normal age related wear with some foxing, mainly around endpapers, but overall are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The front pastedown of each volume has the bookplate of Edward King, with coat of arms and the motto 'Kings Ay to Kin Kindlie'. Volume One has handwritten note, with initials "E.K", on front free endpaper "This is known as 'Steevens' Own Edition' and is by many considered the most accurate and desirable edition published."
