Remarkably fresh and clean, uniformly bound set of this much celebrated, deluxe, student edition of Virgil, by C.G. Heyne. He issued four 'incomparable editions' (Dibdin), this being the London reprint of the Leipzig edition of 1788. In addition to the received Vergilian canon, it includes indexes and an incredibly thorough chronological list of all Virgil editions ever printed. This is probably one of the copies on large paper, in royal octavo, ornamented with beautiful vignettes, mentioned by Dibdin. Dibdin (4th ed.) II, p.559; Schweiger II, 1181.

The material included here aligns very much with his ideas of 'New Physiology', including a system of classification based on 'matter' and separate laws and principles for governing dead or common matter (chemistry) vs living matter (physiology). Rebacked in a modern half cloth, with marbled boards. With the title label from the original backstrip loosely inserted. Externally, very smart indeed, with minimal signs of shelf wear.
