After serving three terms as a congressman from Arizona, he served as Secretary of the Interior, under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1979, he returned to the West. In 1980, Udall was elected to the Central Arizona Water Conservation District Board and commissioned as a member of the Morrison Institute.
