An anthology of writings by Reynolds, du Fresnoy, Richardson, Opie, Gilpi, et al., arranged by subject. Mainwaring had been a naval officer for 37 years, but in 'these monotonous times of peace', with 'an unwilling retirement to half-pay', had time for such a work.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. pp.xxvi, 85 pages, with 14 woodcut plates of antiquities. A good plus hardback in the original part leather binding. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt, with a maroon Moroccan label, but as happens with many of these very old books, this book needs to be opened with care as the front hinge is weak. Also the base and top of the spine are worn, which again is common.

Second Edition, part I [all published], [ii],[5]-116pp., new endpapers, modern boards, spine printed paper label. First published in 1800, of this second revised edition only the first part was published. Sir George Smith Gibbes (1771-1851) was admitted a Candidate of the College of Physicians 25th June, 1803 and Fellow 25th June, 1804. He settled at Bath, where he practised with distinguished reputation and success for a long series of years. In 1804 he was elected physician to the Bath General hospital; in 1819 was appointed physician extraordinary to Queen Charlotte, and in 1820 received the honour of knighthood.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. 12mo., xviii, [ii], 216 pages, some light vert occasional spotting, original half calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt. A VG tightly bound copy slightly rubbed on some extremities. The work covers a wide variety of ailments with suggested treatments - Fevers, Pleurisy, Madness, Small-Pox, Haemoptoe, Nephritis, Ulcers in the Kidnies, Disorders of the Eyes, The Bastard Peripneumony, or Humoral Asthma, Epilepsy, Flatus, Apoplexy, Venereal Diseases, Diarrhoea, Dysentry, Cholera, Piles, Diabetes, Worms, Scurvy, Importence, Gout, etc. Thomas Marryat M.D. (1730 1792) was an English physician, known also as a medical writer and wit. After a peripatetic life Marryat finally settled in Bristol 1785, where he initially made a good living but died poor in 1792. His reputation as a successful healer survived, and led to this, probably the best, edition of his most popular book. Therapeutics was initially published in Latin in 1758 and translated soon after. Many editions were published in the author's lifetime, some known only in single copies.

Early half green morocco and marbled boards, partially uncut, cutting from a Bath newspaper announcing that the Subscription period is closing pasted to the front blank, a similar cutting from the Bath Journal of 1805 recording a play at Covent Garden Theatre and reprinting a verse of Ashley's sung at the performance, another cutting from the Bath and Cheltenham Gazette for 1817 reprinting a glee written by Ashley and sung at the Harmonic Dinner, both pasted at the end, ex-libris Bath Municipal Libraries with their book-plate roughly removed from the front paste-down and a 'Sold' stamp on title. *Very scarce, two locations on COPAC : Oxford and the British Library. The latter copy collates with pp.138 and thus appears to lack the Subscriber's List [pp. 139-154] present in the above copy.

Original boards uncut, paper spine label, lowermost couple of inches and top edge of the spine worn, Dedication leaf has adhered to the following leaf in a small portion of the gutter and has torn not affecting any text, ex-libris Bath Municipal libraries, book-plate roughly removed from the front paste-down and 'Sold' stamp on title, signature in pencil of MARY MEYLER ABBEY CHURCHYARD on the front paste-down [see imprint of this work]. *A nice association copy of a very scarce title in any edition. This appears to be the first edition with Bayly's name on the title. COPAC does not record the first edition, only the second of 1817, third of 1818, and fourth of 1819, all in single copies. There is no location for this edition.

pp. (iv), iv List of Subscribers, 84. Frontispiece and 2 plates [aquatints by COURBOULD after BARKER]. ? lacks half-title. Paper watermarked 'BE & S Bath 1807'. Later half calf and marbled boards, the covers a little bowed and needing pressing, a cutting from the Bath Herald, Nov.18, 1809, pasted to the verso of the frontispiece announcing the publication of this work, ex-libris Guilldhall Library, Bath, with their book-plate on the front paste-down, now crudely removed, 'Sold' stamp of the Bath Municipal Libraries on title, a little foxing of the tissue guards to the text plates and occasionally in the margins. *COPAC gives three locations - Manchester, Oxford, British Library.

Cloth. Zustand: Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A scarce list of all members of the army during November 1815, a wonderful snapshot of military history at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The scarce November 1815 volume of 'The Army List', a monthly publication detailing all members of the military, from general and field officers to aides de camp to His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, to medical departments and chaplains.An interesting snapshot of the military just five months after the ending of the Napoleonic Wars with the Battle of Waterloo.Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down.Original wraps bound in. In the original cloth binding. Externally, with some light marks and a little discolouration. Cracks to the head of the joints and spine, with a small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Pages are lightly age-toned with some occasional marks. Booksellers label to the front wrap. Good. book.

Copac lists Sherston's work at BL, Oxford, and Manchester only; OCLC adds eight US locations. Honiton-Hill is not in BL nor recorded on Copac; OCLC lists this edition at Torbay Library only, and an 1811 edition at Exeter in the UK and Stanford in the US. A nice volume of two quite scarce regional printings.

Bound with: GIBBES (George Smith): A Second Treatise on the Bath Waters, Comprehending their Medicinal Powers in General, and Particularly as they Relate to the Cure of Dyspepsia, Gout, Rheumatism, Jaundice and Liver Complaints, Chlorosis, Cutaneous Eruptions, Palsy, &c. &c. First Edition. 8vo. [2]ff, 120pp. Uncut edges. Bath: printed by W. Meyler, Grove; and sold by all the Booksellers in Bath; and by the Robinsons, London, 1803 The first treatise has a strip cut from the head of the title, which has been infilled. The second has the author's name written at the head. A few pencil markings and a little spotting but very good copies. ESTC locates nine copies of the first treatise, but only one of them in the USA, at the National Library of Medicine. George Smith Gibbes (1771-1851) practised medicine in Bath for many years, being elected Physician to Bath General Hospital in 1804, and appointed Physician Extraordinary to Queen Charlotte in 1819. He was knighted in 1820.

Disbound, title page hanging on by a thread. 8vo, title page [iii-iv?], v-vi, 7-32, complex engraved plate with properties of some principal substances (water, sulphur, nitrous oxide, etc.) according to various systems follows last page. Text complete despite the pagination. The author was a well known physician who practiced at Bath. Jane Austen, in a letter to her brother informing him of their father's death, related that Dr. Gibbs (spelled without the e by her) was called to his deathbed by their family doctor as a last resort. Curious and presumably very rare.

FIRST EDITION, scattered foxing, pp. [iv], 116 (111-16 ads), 8vo, original boards, rebacked, fragment of printed label retained, corners worn, still good. Bayly's second book, reprinting some pieces form the 1817 collection, which had almost exclusively been concerned with Bath. The cynical and amusing Parliamentary Letters appear here for the first time. The advertisements at the end are in two parts: Popular Novels, and New Works of Importance.
