Six pieces in one volume, 8vo, in fine condition in contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt (lacks label). Early armorial bookplate of W. Radcliffe. A rare nonce collection, containing the sheets of various publications from 1749 to 1753, as described below, with a general title-page. James Fortescue (1716-1777) was a Church of England clergyman who was involved in one way or another for most of his life with Exeter College, Oxford. He was a learned man, with conservative instincts, which he tried to express from time to time in verse. Included in the volume are the following: copies appear to vary in their constituent parts, and the ESTC entries are muddled. See Foxon p. 280. 1. SCIENCE; A POEM, (in a religious view) on it's decline and revival. With a particular regard to the mission of Moses, and the coming of the Messiah. Oxford: printed for J. Fletcher in the Turl; and sold by M. Cooper and W. Owen in London; and J. Leake at Bath. 1751. 8vo, pp. iii, [i], 21. First edition. 2. SCIENCE: AN EPISTLE on it's decline and revival. With a particular view to the seats of learning, and a virtuous, philosophical life Oxford: printed for J. Fletcher and sold by M. Cooper and W. Owen in London, and J. Leake at Bath. 1750. 8vo, pp. iv, 36. First edition. This poem includes references to Isaac Newton. As Foxon notes, copies separately issued were imposed in a quarto format; Foxon also states that copies of the octavo issue used for this nonce collection normally bear the author's name on the title-page, but in this copy it is not present. Foxon F204. 3. AN ESSAY ON SACRED HARMONY. London: printed for W. Owen M. Cooper, and R. Baldwin 1753. 8vo, pp. [ii], 43-58, '17'-'18' (mistake for 59-60). First edition. In verse: a continuation of item 5 below. 4. ESSAY THE SECOND: ON SACRED HARMONY. London: printed for W. Owen M. Cooper, and R. Baldwin 1754. 8vo, pp. [ii], 9-40, 83-91. First edition. In verse: a further continuation. Again, the opening pages have been misnumbered: they should be 61-82. 5. ESSAYS MORAL AND MISCELLANEOUS. Viz. An introductory speech from Solomon, with an ode. A vision on a plan of the ancients. A sketch of life after the manners of the moderns. The state of man; his passions, their objects, and end; their use, abuse, regulation, and employment. With a poem sacred to the memory of the Princes of Wales, and of Orange. Part I [altered in MS to II]. London: printed for R. Baldwink jun 1752. 8vo, pp. vi, 42. First edition: entirely in verse. 6. A VIEW OF LIFE IN ITS SEVERAL PASSIONS. With a preliminary discourse on moral writing. London, printed for M. Cooper and sold by W. Owen J. Fletcher at Oxford; and J. Leake at Bath. 1749. 8vo, pp. 23; title in red and black. First edition. A poem in rhymed couplets. The preface speaks of Dryden 'in his elder years', acknowledging the faults found in his earlier work by Jeremy Collier. Fortescue warns against 'all that cargoe of farces, novels, and romances, daily imported from France, or derived to us from former licentious ages; products, properly, of foreign growth, not suited to our colder, and I hope, more virtuous climate; too enervating, and therefore highly improper for an English taste, and English constitution'. Foxon F205.
