Large 8vo in black cloth backed red paper covered boards, gilt lettering to spine, 326pp, plates, illustrations in text, bibliography, index etc. Published simultaneously in the UK and US, despite strong opposition from both the UK and US intelligence services who made great efforts, on both sides of the Atlantic, to completely stop publication, smear Welchman, and deter anyone else from publishing information about the security services without their veto. However Allen Lane withdrew the UK edition after only a few hundred copies were sold (mostly overseas) and the bulk of copies were pulped. In the US McGraw Hill had printed more copies than Allen Lane, but cancelled all publicity and promotion for the book, sales were consequently dramatically supressed and most copies were also pulped. A softback edition of the book was published 15 years later in 1997 after much more of the Bletchley Park story had come to light. .
