Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Pickering is a fine example of a motte-and bailey castle, first built in earth and timber by William the Conqueror in the years following the Norman Conquest. It was rebuilt in stone and extended by subsequent kings, notably Henry III and Edward II, in response to the threat posed at different times by rebellious barons and the Scots. In 1267 the castle was granted to Edmund Earl of Lancaster, whose son Thomas led a revolt against Edward II. Thomas was ultimately defeated at the battle of Boroughbridge, not far from Pickering, and the castle was returned to royal hands. This colour handbook provides a full account of the history of the castle, including its various functions as administrative centre, royal hunting lodge, law court and prison; and includes a tour of the extensive remains that can still be seen today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. From the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries Eltham palace was an important royal palace, a favoured residence where successive monarchs spent Christmas and hunted in the surrounding park. Edward IV built the magnificent Great Hall which survives today, with its soaring hammerbeam roof and oriel windows. In 1933 the site was leased to Stephen Courtauld, who constructed a modern house incorporating the Great Hall. The house was lavishly decorated in a variety of styles, reflecting the influence of Art Deco and contemporary ocean liners, as well as incorporating historical and classical motifs. This souvenir guide does full justice to the medieval remains, the stunning Courtauld interiors and the delightful gardens, also laid out in the 1930s. The Courtaulds were prominent figures in the worlds of society and the arts, as well as pursuing adventurous leisure activities; the text by Michael Turner draws on new research to shed light on their glamorous if brief occupation of Eltham. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The second edition of a comprehensive, accessible study of Caryl Churchill's theatre, detailing her feminism, socialism and experimental style. The volume traces the scope and development of Caryl Churchill's theatre from her early writing for radio and television, through her stage career of the 1970s and 1980s to her recent major success Far Away. Making use of contemporary critical and feminist theory, the study offers close dramatic and theatrical readings of the plays highlighting Churchill's concerns with feminism, socialism and theatrical style. A key chapter on 'The Woman Writer' examines those plays, including Cloud Nine and Top Girls, which brought Churchill to the attention of the international feminist theatre academy, and links Churchill's emergent feminism to her personal struggle to combine a career in the theatre with motherhood. Detailing the international success of plays such as Serious Money and Mad Forest, alongside some of the lesser known and lesser studies earlier work, this accessible account illustrates how Churchill has come to be recognised as one of the leading playwrights of our contemporary theatre. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Julius Caesar was, as this book maintains, quite simply the most famous Roman who ever lived. His influence endures to the present day: in our 'Julian' calendar of 365.25 days, which he introduced; in the geographical entity we call France, whose boundaries he established; and, thanks to his 'invasion' of 55 BCE, his is virtually the earliest familiar name in the history of Britain. This introductory book seeks to explore the many facets of his complex character - his vanity and his vitality, his charisma and his cruelty. It seeks to set his astounding career and accomplishments against the background of late republican Rome, so enabling the reader to understand not only Caesar himself but also the violent and destructive world in which he grew up. It traces in detail the sources of his phenomenal rise to power and the deep unpopularity which ultimately made him 'one of the loneliest men alive'. Garland pays particular attention to the day of Caesar's death, which can, like no other day of the ancient world, be re-constructed on an almost hour-by-hour basis. Caesar's powerful legacy is also examined, as is his 'reception' in European thought and culture from antiquity to the present day in a variety of media, including epic poetry, drama, fiction and film. The book includes a guide to further reading. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. John Fowles (1926-2005) was a novelist. William Stephenson's 2003 critical study divides Fowles's work into three chronological phases, focusing on his development as a novelist, essayist, and thinker; discussing him in the light of his literary predecessors such as Hardy, Defoe, and Scott; and examining the key biographical influences on his writing. This book breaks new ground by exploring the hitherto overlooked role of ethnicity in Fowles's novels, and his idiosyncratic treatment of the past in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969) and A Maggot (1985). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The release of previously unavailable Soviet archives has allowed a re-examination of Anglo-Soviet relations during Churchill's peacetime administration, with special emphasis on the Kremlin's motivation for resisting the Prime Minister's attempts to end the Cold War. Throughout 1951-55, the time was not yet ripe for detente: the USSR and Western powers were less than willing to accommodate each other. Instead they engaged in the consolidation of their own blocs and the build-up of their defensive potential. With Winston Churchill becoming the most outspoken advocate of detente, the Kremlin greeted the return to power of the Conservative Party under his leadership with a general mistrust. After Josef Stalin's death in March 1953, detente remained a distant reality. The collective leadership was keen to reduce international tensions without modifying its predecessor's foreign policy, or abandoning Soviet strongholds of central and eastern Europe. As part of its peace offensive, the Kremlin was prepared to improve the atmosphere in relations with Britain and increase the volume of Anglo-Soviet trade. However, the British remained mistrustful of the intentions of Stalin's successors, and refrained from initiatives leading to a relaxation of export controls independent from American embargo policy. The author demonstrates that Stalin's heirs suspected that Churchill's pursuit of detente was designed to secure far-reaching concessions. Moscow also felt that as a junior partner acting in full dependence on and in co-operation with US policy, Churchill was in no position to conciliate between the USSR and the USA. Engaged in a domestic struggle for power, members of the collective leadership were reluctant to allow their opponent, Georgi Malenkov, to negotiate single-handedly with western statesmen. It was only after Nikita Khrushchev's ascendance to power and Churchill's resignation from office that the Kremlin was prepared to participate in summit talks with the western heads of government. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. To most literary historians, the name of Leigh Hunt does not rank very high: he is mostly known as an idiosyncratic and mediocre poet, a versatile but slightly superficial critic, a man who taxed his friends' patience to the utmost, and -- probably most of all -- the man who exercised an evil influence on Keats. However, there is much more to Hunt than has hitherto been written about him. He was a voracious reader who had a well-developed literary taste, and was a true democrat in that he wanted the interested layman to share the enthusiasm which the reading and apprehension of poetry had given him. Hence his essay What Is Poetry?, which, apart from comments of a more theoretical kind, contains numerous examples from several ages and languages of what in his opinion qualified as fine poetry. His essay is inscribed in the line of theoretical writing on poetry that inspired Shelley, Coleridge and Wordsworth to write their well-known treatises. Hunt distinguishes himself from those three in that his main emphasis is on the reader. This book is gently didactic in that it hopes that the reader would follow and benefit from his advice. Although not a text of sustained theoretical discussion, What Is Poetry? is, in its own idiosyncratic way, a valuable contribution to early 19th century literary criticism. Flemming Olsen provides a long overdue analysis and critique of the essay, which even today is widely read and available, and of Hunt's place in the Romantic movement as it sought to engage with the wider public. Hunt's achievement -- apart from his gift as a talent scout and his altruistic assistance to budding geniuses -- was that he strove to put his enormous, if erratic, learning at the disposal of ordinary people. This book is essential reading for all those engaged with poetry. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The first castle at Middleham was a motte-and-bailey castle, probably established by Alan, lord of Richmond, in the eleventh century. Its earthworks survive on the high ground to the south-west of the present castle. The old site was abandoned in the twelfth century when the existing castle was built. The principal building on the new site was a massive stone keep which is still the dominant feature of the castle. The surrounding ranges were added later, providing new accommodation of a standard that was palatial for that time. In the fifteenth century Middleham Castle was the home of several of the greatest lords of the day and was closely associated with Richard III. This guidebook provides a tour of the castle remains, gives and account of its history and explains how the buildings changed over the centuries. Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The story comes from the Second Book of Samuel and tells of the incestuous passion of Amnon, David's eldest son, for his half-sister, Tamar and the subsequent murder of Amnon by his brother Absolom. Amnon's lust is set in the context of complementary passions of ambition and revenge, reflected in Absolom and Tamar respectively. The play explores King David's conflict between justice and mercy when confronted with these tragic events. It is a work of constantly changing perspectives in which tragedy and comedy, instead of being simply juxtaposed, are blended in a highly original way. Tirso's play is one of the earliest treatments of a theme that has continued to be an inspiration for such modern writers as the novelist Dan Jacobson in The Rape of Tamar and the dramatist Peter Shaffer in Jonadab . Spanish text with facing-page translation, commentary and notes. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting.
