In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Tudor and Stuart Gardens explores the love of formality that characterised gardening in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the influence of Renaissance culture on British gardens. Intricate knot gardens and parterres, the structural use of topiary and hedges and the period's fascination with non-native plants influenced the evolution of British gardens over the following centuries. This was a time when gardens were used to demonstrate the status, wealth and education of the owner, and the period provides an intriguing perspective on how garden design and plantsmanship reflected social differences and divisions. Tudor and Stuart garden design and planting includes much that can inspire today's gardener, and the book includes tips and advice on how to create elements of these gardens in modern plots, large or small. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Sold as a multi-volume set the individual volumes are also available for purchase. This is the second volume on the history of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), covering the period 1932 to 1945. In 1931, when the economic slump created mass unemployment, the TGWU was a large rambling union. The union lost members, struggled to hold its activists together, and split politically between communists and their allies and the right-wing labour leadership of Bevin. This spilled over to the struggle of the unemployed, the role of the state, and attitudes to the growth of fascism at home and abroad. By the late 1930s, an armament-inspired boom allowed the TGWU to negotiate industry-wide formal agreements in many of its strongholds docks, passenger and commercial road transport, and general labourers. These deals favoured the weak but held back the strong such as the London bus workers who staged strikes based on rank-and-file organisation. These were matched by local strikes against a range of speed-up initiatives. The TGWU backed rearmament and the war when it came. The leadership put aside its anti-communism for the duration, and communist-inspired shop stewards played major roles in improving war-time productivity. The union grew and large numbers of women joined, forming their own groups and playing an increasing role in union affairs. At the same time the TGWU hesitantly supported liberation in the colonies. As the war came to an end, the union supported the welfare reforms of the Beveridge report and backed the election of a Labour Government. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Sold as a multi-volume set the individual volumes are also available for purchase. This volume traces the history of the TGWU from its zenith in the period of the Labour Government to its nadir in 1992. It easily divides itself into two distinct periods. The first from 1974-79 saw a reforming Labour government which, recognising trade union strength, was determined to bring about a fundamental and irreversible shift in the balance of power and wealth in favour of working people. It marked the zenith of the TGWU in which the union played an important role, overseeing the repeal of anti-union Industrial Relation Act, and the enactment of a raft of pro-worker legislation. But this was insufficient to sustain the 'Social Contract' between the Labour Government and the Trade Unions leading to the Winter of Discontent and the Tory election victory of 1979. The second period, 1979-92, witnessed the nadir of the TGWU. A right wing Conservative government led by Margaret Thatcher, was determined to reverse all the gains of preceding Labour administrations. Anti-union legislation and the cruel tool of unemployment created the economic and political conditions to decimate trade unions. Defensive struggles could not stop the defeats suffered by car workers, miners, printers and dockers. Trade union membership declined in the Thatcher years, leading to a bleak period of industrial defeat and union retrenchment, characterised by mergers and reorganisation - mitigated only by positive moves to tackle endemic racism and sexism in an attempt to involve previously disregarded women and black workers. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Yew Tree at the Head of the Strand is an affectionate and humorous memoir of growing up in Newry predominantly Catholic and sometimes fiercely Nationalist in the 1940s and 50s. From the lively atmosphere of his fathers pub to the broadening of horizons at The Queens University Belfast, Brian Cosgrove evokes a childhood and adolescence enlivened by comics, story books and films, seaside summer holidays in Warrenpoint with his brothers and sisters, and visits to his Uncle Johnnys farm at Lislea. Along the way he reflects on the culture that he grew up in, where every aspect of life education, sport, politics, sex was experienced under the pervasive influence of a Catholic/Nationalist ethos. Central to the story are the figures of his father, a hard working and deeply thoughtful family man, and especially his mother an ordinary/extraordinary woman. Brian Cosgrove writes poignantly about his mothers serious illness and death from cancer when he was nineteen, and of its impact on himself and his father; and he reflects on the process of grieving and its effects. Lighthearted and serious in turn perceptive and full of insight into the social and political issues of twentieth century Irish history this book is a vivid picture of growing up in Northern Ireland. Drawing from neuroscience on the idea of 'internal gain', an internal volume control which helps us amplify and focus on quiet sounds in times of threat, danger or intense concentration, Ruby Robinson's brilliant debut introduces a poet whose work is governed by a scrupulous attention to the detail of the contemporary world. Moving and original, her poems invite us to listen carefully, and use ideas of hearing and listening to explore the legacies of trauma. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Many people might imagine that the task of reconstructing the diet of our prehistoric ancestors would be completely impossible. In some ways they are right, but when archaeologists recover the remains of our distant forebears and their tools they also look for clues about their food. The evidence may survive in a variety of different forms: mounds of discarded seashells, for example, or the bones of wild and domestic animals and the remains of plants. So whether the evidence concerns the hunters of the Palaeolithic or the first farmers of the Neolithic or the Celtic chieftains of the late Iron Age, we do have quite a number of clues to help us reconstruct their diet. This book provides a fascinating insight into the foods which were eaten by our prehistoric ancestors and attempts to recreate recipes which are authentic and palatable. There are practical restraints of course - some of the ingredients, like mammoth steaks or rhinoceros joints, are difficult to find in the modern supermarket. There are also other staples that we take for granted today which were not available to our prehistoric forebears - sugar, yeast, spices, vinegar, onions, sugar, yeast, spices, vinegar, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, oranges and lemons to name a few. They did, however, use much more of our wild vegetation than we do now and this is reflected in recipes such as Nettle Puree, Easter Ledge Pudding (using dandelion leaves) and boiled Sea Urchins. Beautifully illustrated with full colour photography throughout, the book provides a unique insight into our culinary prehistory. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Its earthworks survive on the high ground to the south-west of the present castle. The old site was abandoned in the twelfth century when the existing castle was built. The principal building on the new site was a massive stone keep which is still the dominant feature of the castle. The surrounding ranges were added later, providing new accommodation of a standard that was palatial for that time. In the fifteenth century Middleham Castle was the home of several of the greatest lords of the day and was closely associated with Richard III. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Vesuvius is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth. Its story is fascinating - not only its rich geological and geographical history, but also the changing social, religious and intellectual impact that the volcano has always had upon the people living around it. Hence, this book is truly a biography of a formidable and richly colourful living entity.Volcanoes are not passive like other mountains, and Vesuvius has been less passive than most volcanoes. It is the paramount natural feature in the whole region of Campania in southern Italy, and the constant rival of the turbulent city of Naples that lies at its heart. Volcano and city have played a dominant role on the stage of Campania since the first literate Greek colonists settled there some 3000 years ago. The Campanians have never been able to remember with serenity, nor to orget with impunity, that theirs is a volcanic land. Vesuvius threatens in the east; a rash of smaller volcanoes riddle the landscape of the Campi Flegrei to the west; and between them lie Naples and a host of busy towns. For many centuries, the people believed that the Underworld lurked beneath the ground itself. The ways in which the people have interpreted the habits and behaviour of the volcano have given it a distinct personality, and an almost anthropomorphic quality. Vesuvius has been as capricious as a spoilt courtesan. During its more tempestuous outbursts, it has destroyed homes and whole villages, and sent thousands of people to the Underworld. In calmer times, the destructive lava and ash then weathered into soils of such exquisite fertility that they recalled legends of a Golden Age.Some of that character has been manifested in the behaviour of the Campanians. They have watched their volcano, and they have watched over it; they have suffered from its fits of temper; they have feared and revered it; they have taken out images of their patron saints to propitiate it; and they have taken it to their hearts. Vesuvius has played a part in Campanian society that has been perhaps surpassed only by the strongest of rulers - or, more recently, by the bosses of the notorious parallel government that holds sway in the region. And, of course, Vesuvius buried Pompeii. Vesuvius threatens its surroundings today. The development of contingency plans for its next great eruption shows that scientists can apply the latest techniques to discover when the next eruption is about to occur, but also how such plans meet with a range of opposition from the people under threat. 'Vesuvius: A Biography' is based on the latest research and also on a prudent appraisal of contemporary historical accounts. Wherever possible, the story is based on eye-witness accounts; many are graphic word portraits the equal of photography and television coverage. Fresh translation of classical source material features extensively. Written with the non-specialist reader in mind, the book will be compelling reading for not only geologists and geographers but also emergency planners and all those fascinated by the dramatic face of the Earth and eager to explore its rich human dimensions as much as its spectacular physical processes. This is a complete history of the relationship between one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world and the many people who live perilously close to it. With new translations of classical sources, the story comes up to today and the ominous future. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Since the Holocaust, traces of memory are virtually all that remain in Poland today after more than eight hundred years of Jewish life there. This remarkable album, published on behalf of the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, offers a sensitive way of looking at that past. Based entirely on arresting, present-day colour photographs of Polish Galicia, it shows how much of that past can still be seen today if one knows how to look and how to interpret what one sees. The traces of the Jewish past in Polish Galicia can be approached from many angles. Jewish life in Poland was in ruins after the Holocaust, and so too were most of its synagogues and cemeteries. Much evidence of ruin remains, but, astonishingly, there are also traces that bear witness to the great Jewish civilization that once flourished there-synagogues and cemeteries of astounding beauty in villages and small towns as well as in the larger cities. One can also see the exact locations where the Germans murdered the Jews of Galicia in the Holocaust: not only in the infamous death camps and ghettos, but also in fields, in forests, and in rivers. The Germans tried to destroy even the memory of the Jews in Poland, and to a very great extent they succeeded; then came forty years of communism, including the antisemitic campaign of 1968. But now that Poland is once again part of a multicultural Europe, the great Jewish civilization that once flourished on Polish lands is increasingly being memorialized, by local Poles as well as by foreign Jews. Synagogues and cemeteries are being renovated, monuments are being erected, museums are being set up, pilgrimages are taking place, festivals of Jewish culture are being organized, books about Jews are being published, and there are once again rabbis and kosher food. So the traces of memory include how the past is being remembered in Poland today, and the people doing the remembering. Given all these perspectives, the contact with contemporary realities involves a complex emotional journey: grief at a civilization in ruins; pride in its spiritual and cultural achievements; anger at its destruction; nostalgia for a past that is gone; hope for the future. Considering each element in turn and offering cultural insights and information to support each of these responses, the combination of photos and text in this book not only informs but also suggests both how to make sense of the past and how to discover its relevance for the present. The seventy-four photographs are all fully captioned, with additional detailed background notes to explain and contextualize them. The idea is to help people understand the Jewish civilization of Polish Galicia in its local context on the basis of what can still be seen there today. People who have family connections with Polish Galicia will find this an invaluable sourcebook on their own heritage, but its innovative approach to understanding the past will appeal to anyone concerned with questions of history, memory, and identity, and how photography can make the past accessible. Published for the Galicia Jewish Museum, Krakow, by the Littman Library of Jewish Civilization and Indiana University Press. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. This study examines his work, from The Popes Wedding (1962) to Coffee (1995). It gives an overview of the development of his distinctive dramatic language and style, and looks at his experiments with various theatrical forms and genres. It examines, too, the ways in which Bonds insistence upon the necessity of the drama as an agent of social evolution have determined his development as a dramatist. There are sections which situate Bonds work within its wider theatrical and political contexts, and which explore his concerns with issues such as violence, technology and social evolution, as they are expressed in plays such as Saved (1965), and Lear (1971). The study also deals with Bonds continual dialogue with our cultural history with the ways in which he rewrites classic plays and plunders familiar theatrical genres in order to demythologize the past. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Barnard Castle is one of the great fortresses of northern England, sited on a cliff above the River Tees. Originally built after the Norman Conquest by the Baliol family, its defences were successively developed during the Middle Ages to create the castle we can see today. After the death of its most famous owner, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, the castle was gradually neglected in the hands of the Crown, even though it managed to hold out for eleven days against rebels during the Rising of the North 1569. Egglestone Abbey, two miles down river, was a small monastery belonging to the Premonstratensian, or 'white', canons. Never wealthy, part of it was converted into a private house after the monastery's dissolution in 1540. Today its ruins form a picturesque scene above the river bank. Nearby Bowes Castle is the shattered ruin of a keep built by Henry II in the corner of a Roman fort to repel the Scots. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. The majority of fathers, father-substitutes and father figures wish to do well by their children. However, as a number of high profile cases testify, fathers often feel that they receive poor treatment at the hands of the social care system. Recent research points to the value of involved parenting by fathers while government policy initiatives, such as the Gender Equality Duty in Scotland, have attempted to stress the importance of involving fathers in their child care. Gary Clapton proposes a father sensitive, father aware social work practice and suggests that that any social care system that adopts a default position that child care is the responsibility of women alone is hampered by its failure to acknowledge the positive potential of fathers. The arguments advanced in this book concentrate on children and family practice but do not neglect the importance of fatherhood in social work with vulnerable adults, fathers as carers, or in the criminal justice system. Social Work with Fathers will assist those working within social care and children's services, students of social care and social work and policy makers. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Studying British Cinema: 19992009 adopts a number of approaches to popularist, mainstream, and esoteric arthouse films. The book considers the institutional and financial factors that influence U.K. film production and assesses issues of genre, representation, authorship, and social, economic, and political contexts. The growth of coproduction is considered by looking at both Aardman Animation and the Harry Potter franchise (2001 to the present). Representations of social class factor into films as diverse as Red Road (2006) and Love, Actually (2003), and developments in social realism, primarily by female directors, are examined. The revival of the British science fiction and horror film is also covered in detail, and ethnic groups and new economic migrants are viewed in two separate chapters, as well as the growth of films concerning British protagonists in Africa. One section offers a close analysis of two of the most important directors of the decade: Michael Winterbottom and Shane Meadows. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
