Though Temperance reformers initially called for total abstinence from distilled liquor, eventually the reasoning of the New Reformers (led by the New York Temperance Society) called for a total ban on wine since all intoxicating liquors were immoral. But the Bible appear to sanction the use of wine. In this essay Moses Stuart (the first great Biblical scholar in America) wrestles with the question for the first time. While he admits that the Bible allows for the use of pure wine, he also shows that it strongly condemned intoxication. Wines of the nineteenth century were much stronger than Biblical wines, and thus they would not meet with scriptural approval. Thus the Bible allowed for total abstinence. Sabin 93198. Amer. USS Vincennes (1826) was a 703-ton Boston-class sloop of war in the United States Navy from 1826 to 1865. During her service, Vincennes patrolled the Pacific, explored the Antarctic, and blockaded the Confederate Gulf coast in the Civil War. Named for the Revolutionary War Battle of Vincennes, she was the first U.S. warship to circumnavigate the globe. The ship set sail for the first time on 3 September 1826, from New York bound for the Pacific by way of Cape Horn. She cruised extensively in that ocean, visiting the Hawaiian islands in 1829 and made her way to Macau by 1830, under Commander William B. Finch. Her return voyage was made by way of China, the Philippines, the Indian Ocean, and the Cape of Good Hope. Ship chaplain Charles Samuel Stewart published a book about the voyage. After nearly four years, Vincennes arrived back in New York on 8 June 1830, becoming the first U.S. Navy ship to circumnavigate the Earth. Two days later the ship was decommissioned. This work was Dedicated by Chaplain Stewart to Captain William Finch, U.S. Navy, who commanded the Vincennes during this first circumnavigation of the world by an American warship. Stewart was a Navy chaplain and writer who became a missionary. As part of his travels, he kept extensive journals and turned those into books as a means of supplementing his income. Charles S. Stewart graduated from Princeton College in 1815 and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1821. Rev. Charles S. Stewart and his wife, who were married on June 22, 1822, were sent out by the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions, departing in November 1822, along with black missionary and companion Betsey Stockton. Working at the mission at Lahaina on Maui, the Stewarts served until 1825, when they returned to the U.S. because of Mrs. Stewart's health. A Presbyterian, Reverend Stewart became a chaplain in the United States Navy and left from Chesapeake on February 13, 1829, on the frigate Guerriere which was to relieve the Vincennes at the Pacific station. In 1835, he married his second wife, Sarah A. Skillman. Rev. Stewart also was the author of several books on travel.…

Morocco title label detached from spine and laid in at front. Leather well rubbed and scuffed; persihing by rot at spine. Text block sound and complete; boards attached tenuously by cords. Toning and spotting to contents is generally moderate. Some light damp line evidence to margins of first and last few leaves. A prior owner name has been removed from the top edge of the title and preface page by clipping the topmost 1/4 inch from the margins of these pages. Over 100 woodcut illustrations, generally two to a plate but sometimes singly or in threes. One plate observed with the lower third torn away and missing. Otheres appear complete and undamaged. Leather binding well worn; rebacking suggested as a restoration. Dealing with geology, wonders of nature and scientific invention, disasters etc. Good only thus.…

Very good. - Oblong duodecimo (12mo), 4-7/8 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, bound in tan wraps, titled & decorated in black & maroon on both covers, the rear cover cleverly being upside down. There is a tiny chip to the top corner of one cover as well as a small chip out from the bottom front corner and a larger chip with a piece out from the top edge of the other cover. [16] unnumbered pages, with half the pages in the booklet printed upside down from the other half as inspired by the clever title "Mr. Janus". The text & decorations are printed in black & red. Very good. Cleverly titled as explained in the introductory text "Mr. Janus and Ourselves", "Surprising as it may seem we occasionally find people who do not know that we have an entrance to their store from State Street. Remember, however, that it is just as easy to enter by our Chapel Street door should you come from that direction." The oldest business in New Haven and, reputedly, one of the oldest hardware stores in the U.S., The John E. Bassett & Co. store added an extra building connected to the store in 1881, which had an entrance on State Street. In his introductory text, Bassett writes that The John E. Bassett & Co. has an entrance on State Street "and.we've run around the corner for over fifteen years." This would suggest the date of this brochure to be circa 1896. This clever advertising booklet subtly promotes the stores merchandise through well-written essays such as "Skating at Lake Whitney", thus advertising their skates, and so on.…

The main focus of the plates and text is on European geological features like volcanoes and their attendant disasters to mankind, but the plates, for example, also show the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem, the Grotto at Nazareth, India's Mausoleum of Hyder Ali, the Great Wall of China and the old Eddystone Lighthouse.
