Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Bound in contemporary calf-leather over boards, stamped gilt borders to spine, gilt lettering of Tatler over burgundy label at spine, but half of each is chipped away. Bound in at frontis is a piece by Richard Steele, an item dedicated to William Lord Cowper, set in overlarge type-face, then begins with Tuesday, January 3rd, 1709 issue (#115). The interior is remarkably bright, with some scuffing along edges, tips, joints, else quite nice. The Tatler was a gentleman's art, culture, politics, newsy rag of sorts--current events rumor and gossip and humor in about equal measure. This appears to be an omnibus edition, with a publication date of 1764 at title page but reprising short pieces back to 1709-1710. Assembled by Richard Steele, editor, raconteur, and with pieces by and about him, Isaac Bickerstaff, and others, in the form of letters and obituaries, discourses upon manners, foods, wines, architecture and the like. It mimicked Addison and Steele's The Spectator, Samuel Johnson's The Rambler and The Idler, and Goldsmith's Citizen of the World. 318 pp. plus a complete index, letter by letter.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.…

paperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Two volumes (complete). Two comfortable books. Full leather. Gilt monogram of the 5th Earl of Essex (a most wealthy Earldom that allowed George Essex to safely and smoothly move from sinecure to sinecure; his wealth however enabled him to entertain, and commission from, artists such as Turner, Pugin, Horsley, David Wilkie and Landseer). Gilt borders and titling. The spines have wear about the seams and head and feet. The boards have shelving and handling wear about the edges and corners. The boards and spines are comfortable and steady. The contents are most pleasing - especially taking their age into account. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. The Spectator began publication in 1711 and ended in 1713, and at its height sold 20,000 copies a day, according to its authors, covering all manner of subjects pertinent to 18th Century life in London. It is thought to have actually had a daily circulation of 3,000, with many more actual readers who would have read it in London's subscribing coffeehouses. It was also widely read in the American colonies. Originally issued as a paper, the issues were later collated into sets such as this one, reprinted, and continued to be widely read, long after it ceased to be published. The Spectator, in Eight Volumes (complete). All volumes dated to 1791. Printed by David Niven of Glasgow in 1791. Printed for J. Duncan, J. & M. Robertson, Dunlop, & Wilson, J. & W. Shaw, R. Farie, A. Orr, A. M'Goun, and A. Macaulay, Glasgow.; J. Dickson, E. Balfour, P. Hill, J. Hunter, and J. & J. Fairbairn, Edinburgh; and W. Coke, Leith. A very good set. Each volume in full tree calf leather hardback with burgundy and gilt morocco title label to spine, along with dark green morocco volume number label. Gilt decal borders to covers. Covers with rubbing, bumping and wear. Some outer joints worn, but all still bound. Volume 6 spine a little more worn than the others.  Each volume with pictorial frontispiece preceding the title page. Lower edges of frontispiece pages often trimmed shorter than main text at margin. With some offsetting opposite images. Text is nice and clean throughout, making for a very readable set. Text with a few minor flaws - one volume with some marginal tears at title page, and one with gutter tear to title page, meaning page is loose, but still attached. Occasional minor nicks or corner crease. Lower edge of blank endpaper in Volume 8 is roughly torn at lower edge. Some offsetting and minor age spotting to endpapers. Overall an attractive and desirable set, complete in 8 matching bindings. A particularly nice feature is the coloured line decoration to the edge of text block. Text in English. Pagination: Volume 1: 313pp + (10pp) Index;  Volume 2: 224pp + (10pp) Index;  Volume 3: 302pp + (9pp) Index;  Volume 4: 282pp + (6pp) Index;  Volume 5: 285pp + (7pp) Index;  Volume 6: 291pp + (13pp) Index;  Volume 7: 316pp + (8pp) Index;  Volume 8: 273pp + (7pp) Index.  Dimensions: Each volume approximately 184mm x 109mm x 25mm. Set weighs approximately 2.65kg unpacked. Extra postage may be payable for overseas orders. More photos on request. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. They are fresh, clean, clear, only very occasionally smeared with shallow foxing, certain, companionable and assured, all very charming. fk. Leather-bound. Zustand: Good. Second Edition, with Additions. 12mo. Contemporary calf boards, xii + p. 136. Board surfaces scuffed, nicked and altogether abraded in places, with wear, peeling and stray-poking stitching particularly, at bottom of spine. All leather edges gilt-detailed. 11 (of 14 copperplates present, 1 detached but present). Printer's Device of Crossed Keys to title page. (Note: The author is not the famous explorer by the same name). Solildly bound copy in original binding, with fascinating copper plates depicting intricate architectural and artistic details. Cathedrals were once designed consciously, with deep knowledge of how shape of wall, play of light and shadow, affected the inner lives of worshipers and aspirants, remarkably inspiring within the "wish to Be", to rise up, to commune with God. The copperplates within this eighteenth-century study, magnificently reveal this purposed, now perhaps lost forever, understanding of sacred geometry, as manifested in architecture. Includes a "List of persons buried in this Cathedral", including Marmaduke Constaable, Hugh de Lubbersthorpe,Dame Elizabeth Beckwith, , Ethelrida, Daughter of Edwin the Great, Eadbert, King of Northumberland, John Negropontens, Gilbert Pynchbeck, Lady Mary Younge, Richrd Whittington (but not his cat), and Sweryne, a Danish King. ".With the Office of Treasurer naturally fell that of Sub-Treasrer, whose duty it was to provide Sacrists and other Officers to do the servile Offcesof the Church, as cleaning it, opening the Doors, ringing the Bells, blowing the Organ, &c. for which the Treasurer usually paid him a Salary of 50 Marks - Bot these Offices became extinct in this Church very early, and the Reason given for dissolving them was undoubtedly a sufficient one. (abrepto omni Thesauro, desiit Thesaurorii munus: Being plundered of all its Treasure, it had no further Need of a Treasurer." (p. 134).…

4 vols. bound as 1, 8vo, pp. 52, [2]; [iii], 408-534; 76; 124. Contemporary sheep, spine divided by double gilt rules. Some scattered toning, a few leaves foxed, hole to title-page of one vol touching text with no loss of sense. Rubbed, some wear to edges, particularly spine ends, joints split but hinges firm. Ownership inscription of Robert Drummond, Glasgow to flyleaf dated 1828, his inscription to first title-page dated 1772, final leaf of first volume filled-out in contemporary manuscript. A sammelband of heterogeneous material assembled by Rev. Robert Drummond, including an almost-unrecorded issue of the articles of a Belfast annuity fund. ESTC records 4 copies of an identically-paginated book ?The Charter-Party: or, articles of agreement of the Belfast Annuity Company?, 2 of which are at the Linen Hall Library, Belfast. Consultation with their holdings reveals one copy with the ESTC wording on the title-page and one with the title-page as here, but with otherwise-identical contents. John Russel?s sermon was popular enough to reach a second edition the following year, but both are now scarce, with this first printing recorded in 5 institutions in ESTC, while Colquhoun?s Christian Union has 14 records. Despite the title promising three parts, and the subtitle claiming this issue was parts one and two, no further parts appear to have followed. ESTC T222770; T27523; T165568.…

12mo, pp. xxiv, 259, [5] advertisements; contemporary calf, spine gilt (head of spine chipped, joints a little rubbed). First edition of this adaptation by Mary Collyer (d. 1762): this is her principal work, reprinted many dozens of times between 1761 and the end of the century - there were editions in London and Dublin, of course, but also Belfast, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, New Haven and many other American towns. Collyer had become known to the bluestocking circle of Elizabeth Montagu, Catherine Talbot and Elizabeth Carter through her translation of Marivaux's La Vie de Marianne (as The Virtuous Orphan, 1743) and her own Felicia to Charlotte (1744). Mary was married to Joseph Collyer the elder (d. 1776), bookseller and translator, who published several of her works and also completed her final translation, of Klopstock's Messiah (1764). He claimed that it was the strain of translating Gessner and Klopstock which contributed to her death at the end of 1763. From the names on the title page, it looks very much as though Collyer used her husband's experience to become one of the publishers of this book, which she dedicated to Queen Charlotte, then newly married to George III. Inscription of Lieut. Col. Packe of Caythorpe Hall, 1864: George Hussey Packe (1796-1874) had been present at Waterloo, an MP and an early and successful investor in railways between London and York.…
