Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Bound in contemporary calf-leather over boards, stamped gilt borders to spine, gilt lettering of Tatler over burgundy label at spine, but half of each is chipped away. Bound in at frontis is a piece by Richard Steele, an item dedicated to William Lord Cowper, set in overlarge type-face, then begins with Tuesday, January 3rd, 1709 issue (#115). The interior is remarkably bright, with some scuffing along edges, tips, joints, else quite nice. The Tatler was a gentleman's art, culture, politics, newsy rag of sorts--current events rumor and gossip and humor in about equal measure. This appears to be an omnibus edition, with a publication date of 1764 at title page but reprising short pieces back to 1709-1710. Assembled by Richard Steele, editor, raconteur, and with pieces by and about him, Isaac Bickerstaff, and others, in the form of letters and obituaries, discourses upon manners, foods, wines, architecture and the like. It mimicked Addison and Steele's The Spectator, Samuel Johnson's The Rambler and The Idler, and Goldsmith's Citizen of the World. 318 pp. plus a complete index, letter by letter.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. On aged and worn paper; folded four times. Signed 'Clement Shorter'. The letter is headed with Sayers' Totnes address. He begins by explaining that the Sphere's 'Children's Supplement' has been abandoned due to 'the high cost of paper'. Turning to Sayers' other letter, he thanks him for offering to lend him a copy of Baring Gould's 'Strange Survivals', but that he will obtain his own copy. He ends by thanking him for 'the various information'. …

According to the Oxford DNB entry on Carter's wife the crime writer Margery Allingham (whose book jackets were among those he designed): 'Their amiable, childless marriage was funded by Allingham's increasingly successful fiction. And, although Youngman Carter assisted his wife as a sounding board for plot design, and by producing covers and illustrations for her work, he found it difficult to sell his art. Allingham supported his increasingly expensive tastes until after the Second World War, when Pip came into his own writing society columns for The Tatler, which he edited from 1954.' For the letters' recipient E. V. Knox, editor of Punch from 1932 to 1949, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. The letters are in good condition, lightly aged; the galley proof is on the usual cheap paper, discoloured and chipping. (The first two of the four books reviewed by Knox in the proof are crime novels: quite appropriately considering Carter's wife and Knox's brother Ronald, author of the celebrated 'Ten Commandments' of detective fiction.) All eight letters signed 'Youngman Carter'. Three of the eight letters are in autograph: two from 1953 and the other undated. The letters are businesslike, exclusively concerned with the practicalities of reviewing (the sending of copy, 'wordage', deadlines, arrangements for a holiday 'deputy'. On one occasion he asks Knox to send 'an article concerning itself with recommended reading for the Festival [of Britain]', on another he asks him to review H. E. Bates's 'The Face of England', as its illustrator, an 'artist called Kirsting' has 'himself been very kind and unassuming to us in other directions'. On 14 May 1953 he asks Knox to review 'The Christs Hospital Book', of which Carter is 'the most insignificant of the editors'. He explains that he is drawing Knox's attention to 'its existence because the subject is naturally very near my heart, although I think it can stand on its own legs. It is a labour of love by one and all concerned: if you can think it worth a line or so I would be deeply grateful'. The galley proof ('Book Reviews | By E. V. Knox | Holiday Amusements') is headed 'B?20-7?TATLER?July 29 Book Review?1 9-pt. Baskerville'. It can be dated to 1953 from the publication dates of the four books reviewed: 'Post Mortem' by Guy Cullingford ('I rank Mr. Guy Cullingford's Gilbert Worth very high among murderees.'); 'Symphony in Murder' by Amelia R. Long ('And who fired the pistol, and how? If you can discover before the last chapter, in which the whole orchestra is brought into the house for a demonstration by the Homicide Bureau, you deserve a free ticket for the Festival Hall.'); 'Things I Don't Remember' by Jeanne de Casalis (the author 'has a charming way of confusing reminiscence with fiction'); and 'Regional Books' published by Robert Hale. There are three proof corrections by Knox. From the E. V. Knox papers.…

Three titles together in one volume, each covering a similar period. Contemporary blind stamped panelled calf; head & tail of spine worn. 'The Female Tatler was in circulation for just nine months after it was started in July 1709 as a rival to its more famous male namesake. It was . crammed with satirical portraits, theatre gossip and mock adverts, with its editor one Phoebe Crackenthorpe dispensing wide-ranging advice to fashionable young ladies. The Female Tatleralso had a strong if occasionally disputed connection with Cambridge. For Phoebe Crackenthorpe was thought to be Sidney Sussex student Thomas Baker, a moderately successful playwright who had enrolled at the college in 1709 to do an MA. The magazine's tone was socially conservative, with a belief that ladies should dress and behave according to their social status. Those who had recently acquired wealth, and who were seen to lack social graces, were roundly mocked in the 'FT's' pages. But Ms Crackenthorpe was clearly a feminist at the same time, and was scathing of the constraints of beauty and women's education. In issue number 88 she remarked: 'How can people in their senses think that the fine clothes and all the trinkets that are given us are bestowed upon the sex any other ways than playthings are given to children to amuse, keep their thoughts employed and their hands from doing of mischief?' Labelling marriage a 'fatal snare', she insisted that ladies ought to control their husbands by feminine wiles and sensuous charm.' ref: Cambridge University article. One mock advert (Numb. 85) announces 'the Art of keeping a Secret, very useful for Beaus and Women; especially some that have lost their retentive faculty, and drop their copies of their clandestine works out of their pockets, on purpose to discover the author accidentally'. The first issue of The Tory Tatler in which the editor states that 'my intention in publishing this Paper is to expose Vice, Folly and Affectation in all their different Shapes and Disguises, and to recommend Vertue, good Manners, and Simplicity of Life'.…
