Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Fourth Edition. 15-volume set (complete). A well-preserved set of George Steevens' 1793 15-Volume edition of Shakespeare's works, in original full calf. The leather has become dry and cracked with age, and there is some chipping and rubbing to the corners of the boards and heads and feet of the spines, but the binding remains fully intact. The hinges and joints of several volumes are cracked, but holding well. The front board of Volume 3 has been neatly re-attached with linen hinges. Book pages have normal age related wear with some foxing, mainly around endpapers, but overall are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The front pastedown of each volume has the bookplate of Edward King, with coat of arms and the motto 'Kings Ay to Kin Kindlie'. Volume One has handwritten note, with initials "E.K", on front free endpaper "This is known as 'Steevens' Own Edition' and is by many considered the most accurate and desirable edition published." Johnson.A very attractive copy of the most popular work of Philip Miller (1691-1771), the foremost British gardener of the eighteenth century, with five folding plates of botanical illustrations. 'Miller's Gardener's Kalendar, published in fifteen editions between 1732 and 1765, catered for the modest gardener who needed practical advice [Miller] produced a work not only portable, but also at a price to suit those who could not afford a larger book. At four shillings a copy it came within the purse of most and indeed was judged to be "a manual to the whole kingdom". Its aim was to bring into "one easy and concise view" what might be of use to those "hindered by other avocations from bestowing much time in the study of this delightful and innocent work" Under each month could be found directions for work to be done in the kitchen garden with notes on its produce, the pleasure or flower garden with plants then in flower, and the greenhouse and stove with their plants in bloom' (Le Rougetel, pp. 1013).
