In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A new approach to contemporary Irish poetry This study puts contemporary Irish poetry in dialogue with major debates and concerns of European and American poetics. David Lloyd tracks the traits of Irish poetic modernism, from fragmentation to the suspicion of representation, in nineteenth-century responses to the rapid and unsettling effects of Ireland's precocious colonial modernity, such as language loss and political violence. He argues that Irish poetry's inventiveness is driven by the need to find formal means to engage with historical conditions that take from the writer the customary certainties of cultural continuity, identity and aesthetic or personal autonomy, rather than by poetic innovation for its own sake. This reading of Irish poetry understands the innovative impetus that persists through Irish poetry since the nineteenth century as a counterpoetics of modernity. Opening with chapters on Mangan and Yeats, the book then turns to detailed discussions of Trevor Joyce, Maurice Scully, and Catherine Walsh: major Irish contemporary poets never before the focus of a book-length study. David Lloyd is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of California, Riverside. His most recent books are Under Representation: The Racial Regime of Aesthetics (2019) and Beckett's Thing: Theatre and Painting (Edinburgh University Press, 2016).

Neuware - Mary Harron's diverse career includes cult films like I Shot Andy Warhol, American Psycho and The Notorious Bettie Page, as well as a range of network and cable television episodes. This is the first book to examine an overlooked filmmaker in relation to feminist cinema. It discusses the dialectical dynamics within her wide-ranging body of work, and it argues that Harron's work has a distinguishing approach to stylistic and aesthetic choices prompted by cultural contexts, controversial subject matter and production limitations. Each chapter provides an in-depth study on Harron's creative approaches to film and television production, with chapters offering close readings of each of her 5 narrative features, and her work in television and promotional film. With scholarly approaches from the fields of cinema, television, gender, fashion, death and celebrity studies, this is a long-awaited introduction to a groundbreaking figure in contemporary cinema. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A pioneering study of women poets exploring the four laureate roles of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The concurrent tenures of Gillian Clarke as National Poet of Wales, Carol Ann Duffy as UK Poet Laureate, Liz Lochhead as Scots Makar and Paula Meehan as Ireland Professor of Poetry, defied historic rifts between women, poetry and nation. This book explores the extraordinary changes these women fought to achieve as each made her way from marginalised 'poetess' of the 1970s to laureate at the heart of cultural establishment in the 21st century. It looks at how they revitalised these public offices and explores their interventions in contemporary geopolitics and national self-understanding. It also considers how they shaped their roles by engaging with poetic icons of the past, by linking poetry and education and by joining poetry with politics. Anne Varty is a Professor in the English Department at Royal Holloway, University of London. She specialises in poetry by women since WW1, theatre since the Victorian era, and Oscar Wilde. She has edited two collections of essays about Liz Lochhead, most recently The Edinburgh Companion to Liz Lochhead (Edinburgh University Press, 2013).

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Images of Apartheid: Filmmaking on the Fringe in the Old South Africa is an exploration of the low budget, black-action cinema that emerged in South Africa during the 1970s and led to subsequent gangster and race-conflict films that defined an era of prolific genre activity, from Joe Bullet (1973) to American Ninja 4 (1990). Contextualising and documenting the cheap, government-funded 'B-Scheme' films, largely unseen since the fall of the National Party, but also acknowledging the impact of international co-productions such as The Wild Geese (1978) and locally made provocation, including the classic Mapantsula (1988), this study is an exhaustive tour of race-representation and state-subsidised subversion. Also discussing the political turbulence of the era, Images of Apartheid argues that so-called 'ZAxploitation' should be considered within both localised and wider international paracinematic networks of genre adaptation, resulting in the identification of a uniquely South African form of trash and treasure, and schlock and awe. Neuware - Thinking the politics of animals and animality beyond the critique of anthropocentrism and the concerns of biopolitics What happens to political thought if we take the problematic nature of the human-animal distinction, not as something to be demonstrated, but rather as a given What sorts of animal-existential possibilities are derived by tracking not the animal but the animal-to-come through the inherited traditions and institutions that continue to shape prevailing concepts of culture and politics Robert Briggs lays out an original interpretation of Derrida's work which takes the 'question of the animal' beyond the critique of political and philosophical anthropocentrism. Eschewing approaches grounded in animal vulnerability, Briggs reviews theories of power, politics and culture in terms of their capacity to enable novel images of 'zoopolitics'. Along the way he engages with recently translated work in the emerging field of philosophical ethology, including Vinciane Despret's What Would Animals Say If We Asked the Right Questions (2016) and Dominique Lestel's empirical and constructivist phenomenology of human-animal relations. Through these and other interventions, Briggs departs from well-established positions in animal studies to develop new ways of thinking animal politics today. Neuware - The Feminist Library Series Editors: Jackie Jones, Alison Light & Gill Plain Brings together the pioneering work of leading feminist cultural and literary critics for a new generation of readers. Alison Light - Inside History: From Popular Fiction to Life-Writing A collection of thought-provoking essays spanning thirty-five years of Alison Light's work. Inside History addresses a number of the central preoccupations within feminist cultural criticism over this period: the nature of writing by women and what women writers might or might not share; the place of such writing in any literary history or cultural analysis; the politics of popular culture and the question of pleasure; women's relation to ideas of national identity and other forms of belonging; and finally, their contribution to life-writing in its different genres. The volume offers a lively, wide-ranging way into feminist debates, touching on a number of major authors from Alice Walker to Virginia Woolf, on genre fiction, and on the writing of memoir and biography. Chronologically arranged, the essays and short 'think-pieces' chart Alison Light's own intellectual formation as a critic and writer within a wider collective politics. This is explored and contextualised in an autobiographical introduction. Alison Light is a writer and Honorary Professor in the Department of English, University College London; she is also an Honorary Professor at Edinburgh University and a non-stipendiary Senior Research Fellow in English and History at Pembroke College Oxford. She is the author of a number of books, including Common People: The History of an English Family (Penguin 2014), which was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford prize, and her most recent, A Radical Romance, which won the 2020 PEN Ackerley prize for memoir. It illustrates how Japanese high school films link directly to manga, anime, TV dramas and pop music, triggering audience recognition and nostalgia through on-screen use of iconographic images, from school uniforms to rooftop recreational spaces. This book also identifies universal themes of adolescent romance, friendship, and bullying, and the spatial and temporal changes that affect every student's journey. The casting of already-famous music and fashion celebrities as students or as teachers allows the films to capitalise on cross-generational fandom across Japan's prolific entertainment industries. Historicising and contextualising this archetypal figure, this book establishes a taxonomy of female ageing in British cinema, from the 1930s to the present day. Arguing that the prevalence of various iterations of the character actress is essential in understanding the nature of British cinema, specifically in how it has developed to define itself against Hollywood, employing archetypes which draw on well-established mythologies regarding ageing femininities. The book centres on the analysis of a broad range of films, such as Blithe Spirit (1945), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1968) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), as well as the work of selected actresses, considering them within the context of the broader historical factors which impacted on ageing femininities, including the Second World War, the post-war settlement, the Welfare State, and the implications for the women's movement as a whole. At the end of the quest, the surviving birds recognise that the longed-for king is nothing other than the reflection of their own existence. But what about those other birds that were not able to become part of the final representation This groundbreaking book calls them 'counter-memories'; memories that are barred from hegemonic history, but are, nevertheless present in cinematic forms. Due to the strategic and artistic interventions of a range of Iranian filmmakers, such as Abbas Kiarostami and Shahram Mokri, Ali Hatami and Tahmineh Milani, Kianoush Ayari and Rakshan Banietemad, the history of post-revolutionary Iranian Cinema is also structured by counter-memories, with the potential to destabilise officially fabricated success stories of revolution, war and sacred defence. Counter-Memories in Iranian Cinema establishes a new framework for understanding the tensions between censorship and resistance, helping to carve out resistant points of remembering both within and outside state-controlled cinema. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Marie-Eve Morin proposes a reinterpretation of the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty and Nancy from the perspective of realist and object-oriented tendencies in contemporary philosophy. The realist critique of subject-centred anthropocentric thinking indicates the danger, inherent in the phenomenological approach, of reducing being to sense. Morin demonstrates how Merleau-Ponty and Nancy avoid this pitfall through the development of ontologies that respect the materiality and exteriority of what exists without reaffirming the Cartesian divide between mind and world. Morin lays out the parameters of this philosophical approach which operates outside of Cartesian dualism. She orients her analysis around three ideas where Merleau-Ponty's and Nancy's thinking intersect: Body, Thing, Being. Each time, she tracks the role of difference or spacing within sensing and sense-making and concludes that their respective conceptions - as encroachment and promiscuity or as unpassable limit - may provide counterweights to each other. Marie-Eve Morin is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

Whether mobilising the past or exploring the present, dealing with conflict or community, the films discussed in this book, ranging from wartime biopics to costume drama, art cinema to social realism, are compellingly presented as an especially incisive way of accessing and understanding the state of the nation.' Melanie Williams, University of East Anglia British Cinema and a Divided Nation examines representations of the nation found within contemporary British cinema, against a backdrop of rising political tensions and deepening social divisions following the 'Brexit' referendum of June 2016. Exploring ways in which the contest of ideologies within media representations has played out post-2016, the book identifies divisions within society that have been given narrative shape and cultural form within recent British films. With case studies of major films such as Mary Queen of Scots, Peterloo, Darkest Hour, Sorry We Missed You and Downton Abbey, this book questions whether we are seeing the negotiation of a new relationship with the wider world, or simply a re-iteration of a long-standing British, or English, understanding of national identity. Barker, film studies has increasingly embraced multisensory spectatorship. Such approaches privilege a carnal vision and knowledge of the world. Vital Resonances furthers this work and attunes to what is a foundational, yet overlooked, principle of film studies' bodily turn: resonance. In keeping with the soft touch that characterises some of this turn's critical literature - the feel of velvet, the (frustrated) tactility of a sari, the skin of a lover's body - resonance has been brushed over. Through the work of three leading figures in European cinema, Agnès Varda, Michael Haneke and Jean-Luc Nancy, this book establishes resonance as a critical and conceptual paradigm for film analysis, transforming it from a footnote to the bodily turn and finally placing it at the forefront of our fleshy encounter with film. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A reconstruction of Bergson's philosophy of biology in dialogue with the life sciences of today Why read Bergson now And why as a philosopher of biology in particular On the one hand, we are in the midst of a return to Bergson, a revival of interest in his work, and even a full-blown Bergson renaissance. Tano S. Posteraro contributes to this increasingly serious study of Bergson's philosophy with a tight focus on Bergson's theory of evolution. Moreover, he presents an alternative Bergson, not as a phenomenologist whose central datum is the conscious experience of lived time or the lived body in time, but rather as a systematic philosopher of biology with a robust, prescient and largely workable evolutionary programme. The result is a Bergson for the biology of today. Tano S. Posteraro is SSHRC Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at Concordia University. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first monograph to examine how D. H. Lawrence established a professional writing career. Despite the 'materialist turn' in modernist studies, the extent and depth of D. H. Lawrence's engagement with the literary marketplace has not been considered. The labelling of him as a working class 'genius' has concealed the question of how he became a published writer. Analysing the literary marketplace of the 'long' Edwardian period, this book assesses the circumstances for becoming an author at this time, examining Lawrence's changing conceptions of what kind of writer he wanted to be and who he wanted to write for. It reconsiders the significance of Lawrence's literary mentors Ford Madox Hueffer and Edward Garnett and recovers several figures (including Violet Hunt and Ezra Pound) whose significance for Lawrence's career has been underestimated. The book evaluates how Lawrence's work was marketed and received by the reading public in Britain and America, examining publishing houses (including Heinemann, Duckworth, T. Fisher Unwin and Mitchell Kennerley) and literary journals and magazines (such as the New Age, the English Review, Madame and Forum). Annalise Grice is Senior Lecturer in English at Nottingham Trent University, UK. She has published several other book chapters and articles on D. H. Lawrence, including essays for the D. H. Lawrence Review and D. H. Lawrence in Context (Cambridge University Press).

Neuware - Presents cutting-edge criticism on the theme of Katherine Mansfield and children What Virginia Woolf called 'Childlikeness' is a facet of Mansfield's personality which permeates every aspect of her personal and creative life. It is present in her mature fiction, where some of her most well-known and accomplished stories, such as 'Prelude' and 'At the Bay', have children as protagonists. It is present in her early poetry, which includes a collection of poems for children intended for publication and it is also present in her juvenilia, where many of the stories she wrote from an early age for school magazines and other publications, feature children. Even as an adult, Mansfield's love of the miniature, her delight in children in general, her fascination with dolls, all feature in her personal writing. Her relationship with John Middleton Murry was characterised by their mutual descriptions of themselves as little children fighting against a corrupt world. Including a newly discovered short story potentially by Mansfield, with an explanatory essay, this volume engages each of these aspects of the child in Mansfield's work and life. Neuware - Architecture theory through the lens of Continental philosophy Drawing on a range of philosophical texts, Andrej Radman brings together a collection of his essays, published over the last decade, to show that when a society manipulates its matter it is not a reflection of culture, it is culture. To speak of ecologies of architecture is to break with judgement for experience. As Gilles Deleuze put it in his book on Nietzsche, it is not about justification, 'but a different way of feeling: another sensibility'. If to think differently we have to feel differently, then the design of the built environment has no other purpose but to transform us. While engineering is solution-oriented, architecture stays with the problem so as to tease out a creative potential. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Hong Kong Cinema and Sinophone Transnationalisms explores the intricate complexity of selected films and film-making practices from 1930s Hong Kong (and Shanghai) to the later 'new wave' phenomenon of the 1980s. The result is a Sinophone cinema that created some very different ways of understanding 'China' and 'Chineseness', developing their own 'cosmopolitan dreaming' within the cultural and economic changes of those times. Exploring sinification and its multiple manifestations in film, the book examines cinematic genres including Huangmei Opera films, qiqing (strange or queer romance) films, fanchuaners (professional cross-sex performers) in film, Hong Kong's Bond Movies (bangpian), erotic (fengyue) films, and New Wave Hong Kong cinema. In doing so, this book lays fruitful foundations for further understanding the development and changing faces of Hong Kong films and sinophone transnationalism in the even more complex and changing times of today. Tan See Kam is Associate Professor of Film Studies at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau, Macau SAR; and also Chair of Asian Cinema Studies Society.

Neuware - Analyses Thomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson against the background of Anglo-American print culture and oral performance Examining the transatlantic writings and professional careers of Thomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson, this book explores the impact of literary, cultural, political and legal manifestations of authority on nineteenth-century British and American writing, publishing and lecturing. Drawing on primary texts in conjunction with a rich body of archival sources, this study retraces Romantic debates about race and nationhood, analyses the relationship between cultural nationalism and literary historiography and sheds light on Carlyle's and Emerson's professional identities as publishing authors and lecturing celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic. Tim Sommer is a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Researcher at the English Department of the University of Heidelberg.

Neuware - Provides unique access to the key elements of David Sellar's pioneering contribution to Scottish legal history This collection brings together in one volume the principal essays of David Sellar (1941-2019) on Scottish legal history, focused upon the influence of Celtic, Canon, English and customary law in the development of Scots law. It includes a paper written during Sellar's time as Lord Lyon King of Arms (2008-2014) but left unpublished at his death, along with a general introduction by Hector L. MacQueen. Sellar was a pioneering historian of Scots law who rejected previous interpretations of the subject as a series of false starts and rejected experiments. He emphasised instead the continuity of legal development, with change a process of integration of external influences from very early times on. Sellar's approach, articulated mainly through essays published in diverse places over four decades, has had significant influence upon our general understanding of legal history in Scotland as well as leading to appreciation elsewhere of its comparative significance. By gathering the major essays in a single collection, this book demonstrates the scope and reach of Sellar's overall contribution. It provides an opportunity to view Sellar's work as a whole and to access his distinctive perspective on the overall trajectory of Scottish law. Hector L. MacQueen is Emeritus Professor of Private Law at the University of Edinburgh.
