In specific terms, the Armenian question refers to the protection and the freedoms of Armenians from their neighboring communities. The "Armenian Question" explains the 40 years of Armenian-Ottoman history in the context of English, German, and Russian politics between 1877 1914. Ibn Saud adopted radio to govern his vast new Kingdom early on, installing Marconi transmitters, and carrying a mobile transmitter when visiting tribal chiefs. In 1927 he won over the Ulema who had considered it forbidden or magic by inviting them to listen to Koranic recitals broadcast from Riyadh, and read sections back to him. During the 1930s and WW2 he received radio transcripts from Europe. In 1949 he issued a Decree defining the framework for radio. Placing Emir Faisal in charge, he contracted ITT to build a station in Jeddah and studios in Mecca. It first broadcast during Hajj on 1 October 1949 with Faisal welcoming the pilgrims. Daily output, limited to 5 hours of religion, expanded in 1950 with broadcasts in Indonesian and Urdu. In 1953 Saud created the Directorate General of Radio, Press and Publishing to present Saudi Arabia to the world. Headed by Sheikh Abdullah Balkhair, it launched this magazine in November 1955 with Fahd Ismail Al-Abbasi as Editor. (Its name changed to Radio and Television Magazine in 1965, and it ceased in 1967/68). Its very broad scope includes regular features on Directorate activities, King Saud, military, diplomacy, news, economics, science, health, psychology, family, history, literature, education, sport, schedules (Here is Mecca / Disini Mecca) etc. Readers were invited to submit content with 25 Riyals paid for published entries. A colourful photobook, gifted to a delegate to an international geological conference held in Jeddah. Published midway through the second Five-Year Development Plan, it documents "the concrete achievements of recent years which have witnessed the rapid transition from a traditional society towards a technological one" (rear cover). Tipped onto the title page verso is a sheet, in English and Arabic, stating that this copy was "presented on occasion of the international symposium on evolution and mineralization of the Arabian-Nubian Shield", which was convened in February 1978 at the Institute of Applied Geology, King Abdulaziz University. Some of the photographs celebrate recent achievements in Saudi science and technology. No publication date is given, and we have traced a number of editions with unknown priority, including one spiral-bound and one in three languages. Large quarto. Colour illustrations throughout. Original pictorial wrappers, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered in white, map on inner front cover. Spine ends bumped, covers creased, some leaves proud where volume somewhat crudely bound, photographs bright: a very good copy.…

12 black and white photographs, 131 x 179 mm. Official photographs labelled in-plate by the Saudi national broadcasting company, and numbered on the reverse. Rare official government photographs of two kings of Saudi Arabia on the Hajj: HH Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (1902-69), then ruler of Saudi Arabia, is flanked by his brother and soon-to-be successor, HH Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (1906-75). The snapshots show the royal brothers, together and separately, on a pilgrimage to Mecca during Saud's reign. Few photographs of this trip survive, and these show both Saud and Faisal in conversation, saluted by a greeting party in Mecca, and in the traditional clothing of the Hajj. Though undated, the photographs are clearly from the era of Saud's reign, which stretched from 1953 to 1964. In 1964, Faisal staged a bloodless coup with the backing of the royal family and took over kingship of Saudi Arabia, while Saud proceeded to exile in Egypt and Greece. - A few minor creases, one marginal closed tear; in good condition.…
