Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Twelve issues from Saudi Radio's formative years, reflecting changing society and worldview, with key domestic and international events including Hajj and the Suez Crisis. Extremely rare: Worldcat records it with no holdings (OCLC 4770225509). Glossy wraps 23x31cm colour illustrated with first state mast and mic design (n3), mast over a Saudi map (n13-22), or photos (n11, 23). Printed by Printing Press and Publishing Establishment, Jeddah. Arabic text with b/w photos and drawings throughout, each 52pp except n14 with 56pp. Good to very good, browned. Some hard creases. Label residue to wraps of n3 (also postmarked "Mecque") and n23. Ibn Saud adopted radio to govern his vast new Kingdom early on, installing Marconi transmitters, and carrying a mobile transmitter when visiting tribal chiefs. In 1927 he won over the Ulema who had considered it forbidden or magic by inviting them to listen to Koranic recitals broadcast from Riyadh, and read sections back to him. During the 1930s and WW2 he received radio transcripts from Europe. In 1949 he issued a Decree defining the framework for radio. Placing Emir Faisal in charge, he contracted ITT to build a station in Jeddah and studios in Mecca. It first broadcast during Hajj on 1 October 1949 with Faisal welcoming the pilgrims. Daily output, limited to 5 hours of religion, expanded in 1950 with broadcasts in Indonesian and Urdu. In 1953 Saud created the Directorate General of Radio, Press and Publishing to present Saudi Arabia to the world. Headed by Sheikh Abdullah Balkhair, it launched this magazine in November 1955 with Fahd Ismail Al-Abbasi as Editor. (Its name changed to Radio and Television Magazine in 1965, and it ceased in 1967/68). Its very broad scope includes regular features on Directorate activities, King Saud, military, diplomacy, news, economics, science, health, psychology, family, history, literature, education, sport, schedules (Here is Mecca / Disini Mecca) etc. Readers were invited to submit content with 25 Riyals paid for published entries. Selected content: N3: Saud opens King Abdulaziz Military College, inaugurates Riyadh Municipality with Emir Fahd as first Mayor, receives Mufti Hajj Amin Al-Husseini, Sadat and the General Islamic Council, visits India; Syria nationalises the Hejaz Railway; Sudan independence; Libya. / N11: Oil Minister Tariqi interviewed; Saudi Radio's history. / N13: Saud at the Saudi Wireless Airlines Project. / N14: Support for Egypt over Suez; King Abdulaziz Military College. / N15: Saud appoints Fahd Defence Minister; Egypt congratulated over Suez; Directorate hosts US journalists Alfred Lilienthal and Mary Thayer; Arab League's Ahmed Al Sharqi inspects the Directorate; behind the scenes on a radio play. / N16: Suez aftermath; Arab Solidarity Pact; Lilienthal inspects the Directorate. / N17: Saud visits US, UN, Italy, Spain and Cairo. / N19: Eid al Fitr themed with historic description of Mecca. / N20: Saud in Baghdad; inflation and Hajj. / N21: Hajj themed; Saud visits Jordan, inflation response, new laws; Euro-Arab relations; Directorate's photography department, foreign press liaison, news gathering. Adverts introduced including the new Riyadh Bank. / N22: descriptions and anecdotes of recent Hajj, and Directorate's involvement. / N23: Saud visits Ethiopia, orders Taif mosques rebuilt, renews Shura Council term; Islam in Germany; new Siemens radio equipment installed; film recording.
