(price-clipped) [solid copy, moderate shelfwear to bottom edge, a little soiling to page edges; jacket shows some edgewear/soiling, minor chipping at spine extremities (no text affected), slightly ragged tear at top right-hand corner of front panel]. INSCRIBED briefly and SIGNED by "Sam" (presumably the co-author) on the ffep. Novel about the travails of a GI during World War II, starting in North Africa, where for a year "an overwhelming nausea consumes him as he is forced to find sleep in muck and filth, food in tins, and love in brothels." From there he goes on to England, and "we follow him from D-Day onward, through France, Holland, and Germany. We see his anguish and hopeless resignation as he turns into an automaton of murder." And so on, in the "war is Hell" vein, with comparisons invited with Stephen Crane and Erich Maria Remarque. Signed by One Author NOISBN.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 284, [4] pages. Index. Pencil erasure on front endpaper. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Black dot on bottom edge. Inscribed and dated by author on fep. Lanny Jesse Davis (born December 12, 1945) is an American lawyer, consultant, lobbyist, author, and television commentator. He is the co-founder of the law firm of Davis Goldberg & Galper PLLC, and co-founder and partner of the public relations firm Trident DMG. From 1996 to 1998, he served as a special counsel to President Bill Clinton, and was a spokesperson for the President and the White House on matters concerning campaign-finance investigations and other legal issues. In 2005, President George W. Bush appointed Davis to serve on the five-member Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. Davis's clients have included the National Women's History Museum, National Black Chamber of Commerce, Sofitel Hotels, Trent Lott, Gene Upshaw, Dan Snyder, Martha Stewart and the Office of the President at Penn State University. Davis is a Fox News Contributor and has a column called "Purple Nation" that appears regularly in The Hill, The Huffington Post, FoxNews, and Newsmax. He is a graduate of Yale Law School. On a November afternoon in 1996, Lanny Davis got a phone call that would change his life. It was from a top aide at the White House, asking him if he was interested in joining the president's senior staff. Within a few short weeks he had signed on as special counsel to the president. Fourteen months later, his tour of duty almost over, he got another phone call, this time from a Washington Post reporter who asked, "Have you ever heard the name Monica Lewinsky?" In the time between those two phone calls, Davis received an extraordinary political education. As President Bill Clinton's chief spokesman for handling "scandal matters" he had the unenviable job of briefing reporters and answering their pointed questions on the most embarrassing allegations against the president and his aides, from charges of renting out the Lincoln Bedroom, to stories of selling plots in Arlington Cemetery, from irregular campaign fundraising to sexual improprieties. He was the White House's first line of defense against the press corps and the reporters' first point of entry to an increasingly reticent administration. His delicate task was to remain credible to both sides while surviving the inevitable crossfire.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good- dj. First Edition. [moderate shelfwear, a couple of lightly-bumped corners, slight dust-soiling to top edge, "compliments of the publisher" label on ffep; jacket edgeworn, tears at top of spine internally tape-repaired (minimal paper loss), miscellaneous other tiny tears and chips]. A novelized version of an (apparently) true case of a woman whose husband had her committed to a private asylum, thus kicking off her two-year ordeal in the clutches of the Snake Pit-like mental health system. The author assumed a pseudonym "to protect certain factual asylum officials (whose ill treatment of patients she observed with her own eyes) from embarrassing publicity" -- and to protect herself, as well, since she was a member of "a well-known and widely respected family," and was uncertain how they would react to her book. [The paperback edition had the much catchier title of "Madwoman." Interestingly, there is a file on this book in the Fritz Lang papers at the University of Wyoming, which suggests that he was considering a film adaptation.].
