This is Volume II of Andrew Mackay s The Theory and Practice of Finding the Longitude at Sea or Land (1801, second edition, improved and enlarged), an important early 19th century manual on practical navigation and astronomical calculation. Mackay, a Scottish mathematician and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, produced one of the most thorough guides of its time for mariners, surveyors, and navigators, covering the determination of longitude and latitude, compass variation, and the application of newly refined tables. The determination of longitude at sea was one of the great scientific challenges of the 17th and 18th centuries. Unlike latitude, which could be established using the sun s elevation, longitude required accurate timekeeping or precise astronomical measurements to determine a ship s position east or west. It appears to have been done perhaps in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century with five raised bands and labels on the second and fourth (from top) compartments and gold stamped decorations in the other compartments. The two front and two rear end papers have been replaced. The front free paper is creased along the fold and top two inches are torn, but the rest of the page is still attached. ; Volume 1 only of a three volume set. This volume consists of 12 chapters, including his "History of Gardening" which is considered the first comprehensive written history of gardening in England, essays on the importance of precipitation and sunlight on vegetation, directions in raising trees, planting instructions and embellishments in country gardens. At the end of the book is a 16 page index of the first volume. There are two copper plates in this volume- frontispiece illustation of a nobleman's garden and a five fold plate (four vertical folds and one horizontal fold) opposite page 283. The second edition differs from the first in that it adds an introduction and a supplement which includes some descriptions short notes on other period voyages. The Political Anatomy of Ireland (written c. 1672; published 1691) by Sir William Petty is a foundational work of early modern political economy in which quantitative analysis is applied to questions of governance, taxation, and national wealth. Drawing on his experience conducting the Cromwellian âDown Survey,â Petty employs what he termed âpolitical arithmetick,â using calculations of land distribution, population, trade, and revenue to assess Irelandâs economic capacity and administrative structure. After peace was declared with the Dutch, Narborough was given the command of an expedition to the South Seas departing England on 26 September 1669, before sailing through the Straits of Magellan and into the Pacific in October of the following year. His charts of the Straits of Magellan were a great improvement on those of previous navigators and were used by Bulkeley and Cummins following the wreck of the Wager. First edition. THE FOUNDATION OF THE DOCTRINE OF CHANCES . First edition, contained in a complete volume of the Phil. Trans., of de Moivre's first published work on probability, and the first original work on the subject published in Britain, a precursor to his Doctrine of Chances which appeared seven years later. "[De Moivre's] work on the theory of probability surpasses anything done by any other mathematician except Laplace. His principal contributions are his investigations respecting the Duration of Play, his Theory of Recurring Series, and his extension of the value of Daniel Bernoulli's theorem by the aid of Stirling's theorem" (Cajori, p. 245). "The only systematic treatises on probability printed before 1711 were Huygens' De ratiociniis in ludo aleae (1657) and Pierre Rémond de Montmort's Essay d'analyse sur les jeux de hazard (1708). Problems which had been posed in these two books prompted de Moivre's earliest work and, incidentally, caused a feud between Montmort and de Moivre on the subject of originality and priority" (DSB). "Nearly all of De Mensura Sortis was later incorporated into de Moivre's book The Doctrine of Chances (1718, 1738, 1756), which was the most important textbook on probability theory until the publication of Laplace's Théorie Analytique des Probabilités (1812). In the preface de Moivre states that he began his work on probability theory at the exhortation of Francis Robartes, who asked him to solve the division problem for two gamesters playing bowls and also to find the probability of getting certain given faces as the outcome of a given number of throws with a die. He also states that he had previously read the books by Huygens and Montmort 'but these distinguished gentlemen do not seem to have employed that simplicity and generality which the nature of the matter demands.' Furthermore he writes that 'while they suppose that the skill of the gamesters is always equal, they confine this doctrine of games within limits too narrow.' Finally his remarks about Montmort may be read as if Montmort had used only the method of Huygens on some new examples. These rash remarks naturally provoked a dispute with Montmort" (Hald 1984, pp. 230-1). "The most remarkable of de Moivre's contributions [in De mensura sortis] are his derivation of the ruin probability in Huygens' fifth problem; his use of the Poisson approximation to solve the binomial equation B(c, n, p) = ½ with respect to n; his solution of the occupancy problem by means of the method of inclusion and exclusion, and the algorithm for the continuation probability in the duration of play for the ruin problem. Furthermore, he gives without proof the probability of getting a given number of points by throwing any given number of dice and the probability of ruin when one of the players has infinitely many counters. The only contemporary evaluation of these impressive results is the critical review given by Montmort in a letter of 5 September 1712 to Nicholas Bernoulli, about a month after Montmort had received a copy of the paper from de Moivre . [Montmort] recognizes de Moivre's priority to the Poisson approximation, to Robartes' problem, and to the algorithm for finding the continuation probability in the problem of the duration of play" (Hald 2003, pp. 403-4). De Moivre's interest in probability was awakened by Francis Robartes (1649-1718), Member of Parliament and scion of an aristocratic family. In 1692, Robartes wrote a manuscript on two probability problems that he presented to the Royal Society but never published, and in the following year he succeeded in publishing another paper on probability. In 1710 Robartes helped John Harris with his article entitled "Play" in Harris's scientific dictionary Lexicon Technicum. For McCulloch, it stands as "the best of Petty's works" (p. 211), both for the quality of its statistical reporting and for the incisiveness of Petty's policy recommendations for the country. William Petty (1623-1687) first went to Ireland in the 1650s as an army surgeon in Cromwell's expeditionary force. He built up considerable interests there, purchasing some 18,000 acres and serving as an MP, judge, and member of the council of trade. This provided the ideal canvas to develop his conviction that political disagreement could be resolved by "expressing all in 'number, weight and measure'" (ODNB). Petty's goal of statistical precision was facilitated by the data flowing from his vast estates, supplemented with comprehensive tax reports and land surveys. The Political Anatomy provides empirical studies of many aspects of Irish life, including land values, church benefices, and militia defence. The dedicatory epistle is by Nahum Tate (1652-1715), the Irish author of Dido and Aeneas (1689) and poet laureate from 1692 to 1715. In the advertisement, Tate notes that this edition "is Printed after a Copy Transcribed from the Original, writ by the Author's own hand" (p. [xi]). First edition in English, following the first and second editions in French published in 1697 and 1702 respectively. "For over half a century, until the publication of the Encyclopédie, Bayle's Dictionnaire dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe" (PMM). French Protestant Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) wrote his Dictionnaire while in self-imposed exile in Rotterdam as an "anti-clerical counterblast to Moreri's [Le Grand Dictionnaire Historique, 1674], in order, as he put it, 'to rectify Moreri's mistakes and fill the gaps'. Bayle championed reason against belief, philosophy against religion, tolerance against superstition" (ibid.). The dictionary contains some 2,000 entries, including mostly biographies of religious and historical figures as well as writers, in the latter case focusing on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but also articles on geography, all bolstered with a vast array of shoulder and footnotes. The views he expressed in his detailed Life of Mahomet, which, in radical opposition with the opinion of the Church, "stresses the superior tolerance and rationality of Islam's core teaching" (Israel), were reasserted by Voltaire in his Traité sur la tolérance (1763). This first English edition was somewhat abridged, but the editors included additions and corrections made by Bayle in his own annotated copy of the 1702 French edition. The identity of the translator remains uncertain. Isabel Rivers and Elena Muceni identify Bayle's Huguenot friend Michel de la Roche as the most likely translator, probably with the assistance of others. Mikko Tolonen suggests Bernard Mandeville as a possible translator in his Mandeville and Hume (2013), but this is doubted by Muceni (for questions of translation, see Matytsin, The Specter of Skepticism in the Age of Enlightenment, 2016, p. 288).
