Prints (sold individually) of Burne-Jones's illustrations, which were originally designed to accompany The Story of Cupid and Psyche in a Kelmscott version of Morris's The Earthly Paradise. The book was never completed. The original woodblocks, carved mostly by William Morris, were left to the Society of Antiquaries after his death. The blocks were "rediscovered" in the 1960s, and in 1974, the Rampant Lions Press published an edition of the work using them. These engravings were printed from those original wood blocks. The book and prints were in a limited edition of 100. A separate cloth box housed 44 loose prints. Paper size: 13 x 9 inches. Image size: 4 x 2 inches. PRE/100716. Dustjacket creased, a little chipped and nicked to edges. Despite the New York imprint, this was printed by The Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge and bound at the Wigmore Bindery. It was the fifth publication in the series of Clover Hill Editions, a collaboration between Will Carter of Rampant Lions and Reed?s old BBC colleague Douglas Cleverdon. In addition to the 420 numbered copies a further 110 lettered and signed copies were also produced.…

Top edge trimmed, others uncut. Bookplate of Derek Law. A fine copy. This, the eleventh Clover Hill Edition, was a re-issue of the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1926. Aside from paper and binding it differs insofar as it is printed in the Golden Cockerel face (not cut until 1930) and in achieving a far higher density in the inking of the blocks. This was managed by printing the blocks and text separately. (RLP 79).…

Dufty. designed and printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at The Rampant Lions Press in Monotype Ehrhardt, and vol II in Kelmscott Press Troy type, the collotype plates printed by the Cotswold Collotype Company, paper by Barcham Green. 42 wood engravings printed from the original blocks in the Society of Antiquaries within the text in vol II and 2 in Vol I. Folio, original blue cloth backed, William Morris patterned paper covered boards. An extremely good set in the original blue cloth slipcase. The original wood blocks were intended for Morris's verse rendering of the 'Story of Cupid and Psyche' for his illustrated edition of twenty-four stories of The Earthly Paradise which was never completed. The blocks were engraved mostly by William Morris himself from designs by his lifelong friend Edward Burne-Jones and prior to this Clover Hill book had never been published in their original context. The first volume here tells the story of the book and the illustrations and the second is the actual book itself printed in Kelmscott Troy type and with the engravings printed from the original blocks. A remarkable and beautiful feat. The printing of this book by the Carters at the Rampant Lions Press was the subject of a further 96pp book by Sebastian Carter printed at the press in 1984 entitled "The Book Becomes - the making of a fine edition".…

Ralph Robert Watts Sherman Stonor (only son of Lord and Lady Camoys of Stonor Park, Oxfordshire) and Jeanne Stourton (i.e. Dowager Lady Camoys)]. Undated publication, but c.1968. A lavish production printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge, but published in New York by the Chilmark Press. Illustrated paper-covered boards. The book is illustrated with ten drawings by John Piper engraved on wood by Reynolds Stone with a descriptive note by John Piper. Bound at the Cambridge University Press. One of 240 copies, of which this is numbered 121. Page edges rough cut. Interesting provenance: the Stonors were a landed aristocratic British couple, occasional patrons of artists such as Reynolds Stone - their daughter Julia Camoys Stonor wrote a memoir of Jeanne Stonor in 2006 alleging that her mother had murdered her husband in 1976, and that she was a Nazi sympathizer and had adulterous relationships with other men including Joachim von Ribbentrop. Some splitting to slipcase, which is fragile and in a perilous state. Book is in very good condition indeed.…
