Illustrated with 13 wood engravings by David Jones printed from the blocks. Quarter moss-green cloth with gilt spine lettering, with special patterned paper sides designed by Sebastian Carter. Top edge trimmed, others uncut. Bookplate of Derek Law. A fine copy. This, the eleventh Clover Hill Edition, was a re-issue of the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1926. Aside from paper and binding it differs insofar as it is printed in the Golden Cockerel face (not cut until 1930) and in achieving a far higher density in the inking of the blocks. Dufty. designed and printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at The Rampant Lions Press in Monotype Ehrhardt, and vol II in Kelmscott Press Troy type, the collotype plates printed by the Cotswold Collotype Company, paper by Barcham Green. 42 wood engravings printed from the original blocks in the Society of Antiquaries within the text in vol II and 2 in Vol I. Folio, original blue cloth backed, William Morris patterned paper covered boards. An extremely good set in the original blue cloth slipcase. The original wood blocks were intended for Morris's verse rendering of the 'Story of Cupid and Psyche' for his illustrated edition of twenty-four stories of The Earthly Paradise which was never completed. The blocks were engraved mostly by William Morris himself from designs by his lifelong friend Edward Burne-Jones and prior to this Clover Hill book had never been published in their original context. The first volume here tells the story of the book and the illustrations and the second is the actual book itself printed in Kelmscott Troy type and with the engravings printed from the original blocks. A remarkable and beautiful feat. The printing of this book by the Carters at the Rampant Lions Press was the subject of a further 96pp book by Sebastian Carter printed at the press in 1984 entitled "The Book Becomes - the making of a fine edition".…

Significant, as stated in the cataloguer's introduction, as 'the first specimen of printing from the Clover Hill Press' a fact underlined in pencil and then repeated at head, these in the hand of Sir Ambrose Heal. 'On this press (an Albion of 1849) Douglas Cleverdon will print, from time to time, small limited editions which he hopes will prove agreeable to collectors of modern fine printing' Heal himself being eminent in this latter category. The list itself takes its cue from 'Mr Stanley Morison's researches', which have 'emphasised the importance of these ephemera'.…

The Book of Jonah was the first of the three important books illustrated by Jones for the Golden Cockerel Press, first printed in 1926. Cave and Manson praised the "engravings of tremendous power, in which the harmony between the designs and the type was managed with great skill . . . a totally successful conclusion." The printing of the blocks in the 1926 edition left something to be desired, and the present edition, printed by Will Carter from the original blocks, is distinctly superior. …
