The present study looks for unity in him and finds it, or finds a sufficiency of it, in the closely related group of images which appear in everything he wrote, in his verse and his prose, whether early or late, imaginative or journalistic. The images are chiefly images of the theatre and show Heine as - in a special sense of the word - theatre-minded. It is argued further that the images are primarily those of one who looks out on the world; they enable us to see the world with his eyes and so to understand him as creative writer. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon PC JP (18 February 1609 9 December 1674) was an English statesman, lawyer, diplomat and historian who served as chief adviser to Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Lord Chancellor to Charles II from 1660 to 1667.Hyde largely avoided involvement in the political disputes of the 1630s until elected to the Long Parliament in November 1640. The first edition, the scarce and sought after folio issue.Illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, and engraved initials and head- and tail-pieces.Collated, bound without the half-title for the first part, though the half-title is present for the second part. The autobiography of Edward Hyde, containing an account of his life from birth to the Restoration in 1660, followed by his history of the Grand Rebellion, from the Restoration to his banishment in 1667.Hyde, the first Earl of Clarendon, was the Lord Chancellor to King Charles II from his restoration to the throne to 1667. He was a strong royalist, and wrote the influential 'The History of the Rebellion', about the English Civil War, a work which cemented him as one of the most important historians of all time.Hyde was in good favour for most of his life, before being accused of arranging the King's marriage to Catherine of Braganza whilst knowing she was barren, hoping to secure the throne for his grandchildren. He also showed contempt for the King's new mistress, and because of ill-health, his authority quickly weakened. After a few political hardships, he went into exile. The four books are entitled Of the Mechanism of Nature; Attraction and Gravity Considered at Large; Of a Vacuum in the Heavens; The Judgment of Antiquity on the System of Nature. There are numerous mentions of Issac Newton throughout, prominently in Book I, Chapter III. Chapter III of book I is entitled An Answer to a physical Objection from Sir Issac Newton wherein "Jones argued against Newton's theory of gravity, claiming it was not the true explanation for celestial movements and instead proposed alternative explanations based on biblical interpretations." Bound to style in modern quarter speckled calf over marbled boards. Spine with brown morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Edges speckled red. Newer endpapers. Some minor toning to top outer corner of title-page and last leaf. A light dampstain to bottom margin of signature LL. Ink date written at lower margin of title-page. Otherwise a very god copy. William Jones, known as William Jones of Nayland was a Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist. " At Oxford, too, Jones, Horne, and some of their other friends were drawn to the semi-mystical writings of the anti-Newtonian and anti-Lockian John Hutchinson, and developed a high-church theology which was entirely consistent with the predominantly tory mentality of their university. Although by no means an uncritical Hutchinsonian, Jones shared Hutchinson's admiration for the nonjurors and his notions of the English constitution as divinely sanctioned." (Oxford DNB). "In 1756 Jones published his tract The Catholic Doctrine of a Trinity, a statement of the doctrine from the Hutchinsonian point of view, with a summary of biblical proofs. This was followed in 1762 by an Essay on the First Principles of Natural Philosophy, in which he maintained the theories of Hutchinson in opposition to those of Isaac Newton" (Wikipedia) "Early Hutchinsonians did not see Newton and his followers simply as searchers after the truth of the material cosmos, but as aiming to reach conclusions about the Divine Cosmos leading to Deist/Arian or even Unitarian conclusions. As far as the Hutchinsonians were concerned, Newtonians were more to blame than any other potentially heterodox group in England, for the existing threat to the religious and political establishment."
