The book investigates shifts in the gendered spaces assigned to men and women in the 'public' and 'private' domains and their changing modes of interconnection; in concert with these social spaces it examines the emergence of biologically based notions of sex and a novel sense of individual subjectivity. These parallel and linked transformations converged in the development of a new gender system which more efficiently enforced the requirements of patriarchy under the evolving economic conditions of merchant capitalism. These changes can be seen to be rehearsed, contested and debated in literary artefacts of the early modern period - in particular the drama. This book suggests that until the closure of the English theatres in 1642, the drama not only reflected but also exacerbated the turbulence surrounding gender configurations in transition in early modern society. The book reads a wide range of dramatic and non-dramatic texts, and interprets them with the aid of the 'systems theory' developed by the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann.…

Texts may exist on the borderland of word and not-word; or they may spring from borderlands of nation or culture; or they may be considered from the margins of neighbouring disciplines. Essays in this volume explore different texts against varying backgrounds -- Pound's Cantos, Joyce's Ulysses, Trollope's An Eye for an Eye, Woolf's The Waves -- while essays by McGann and Lernout argue the dimensionality of text on the intersection of print and digital media. Le texte et sa traduction se rattachent à deux moments décisifs de l'histoire de deux pays voisins: l'Allemagne des années 1780, qui recherche son identité politique et intellectuelle à l'ombre de la France de Louis XIV et de Voltaire, et la France d'entre deux siècles, convalescente mais avide de se rétablir et de retrouver la grandeur d'un passé légendaire. A la différence de ce que croit la tradition, c'était l'ouvrage de Schwab, et non celui d'Antoine de Rivarol, qui, initialement, a été primé par le jury du concours de l'Académie des Sciences et des Belles-Lettres de Berlin (1782/1784). En outre, malgré son estime pour la France, Schwab a prévu et expliqué d'avance le triomphe de la langue anglaise que l'on connaît aujourd'hui.
