Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Alan Sutton Edition. Paperback. Ticks in margin in pen to a few pages. This book is an anthology of seasonal memories compiled from journals, novels, poems, local traditions, and historical events, illustrated with over forty photographs and engravings. In it you will find accounts of the merry-making season as far back as the fifteenth century when festivities were supervised by a Lord of Misrule, and of the consequent Puritan attempt to abolish Christmas, encasulated in John Evelyn's diary on the day he was abducted from a London chapel for attending 'Anti-Christ's masse'. Here too are the Christmas of Samuel Pepys, the reminiscences of Henry James and the thoughts of George Orwell; plus George Gissing's fictional comparison of two very different Christmases and an account of the decoration trade from Mayhew's classic nineteenth century social history London Labour and London Poor. There are also examples of Londoners - fictional or otherwise - escaping the urban chaos at Christmas, such as Mr. Pooter in A Diary of a Nobody, or Joyce Grenfell's ritual retreat to her cousins in Surrey; and conversely E. M. Dellafield's description in A Diary of a Provincial Lady of a Christmas shopping spree to London. There are also accounts of the frost fairs of the eighteenth century; London during the Blitz; the story of Norway's annual gift of a Christmas tree; plus a portrait of interepid Londoners who brace themselves for a Christmas day swim in the Serpentine each year. Illustrated. 158 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Alan Sutton Edition. Paperback. Foxing to end inside covers. Slight browning to edges of pages through age. Froude was one of the leading historians of the Victorian age - and one of the most controversial. Now his story of the Armada from the Spanish viewpoint, edited and put into historical perspective by A. L. Rowse, is republished to coincide with the Armada's four hundredth anniversay. This book, first published in 1892, was the first to balance the nuermous English accounts of the subject. Illuminated by his knowledge of Spain, his researches into original Spanish sources and his own knowledge of seamanship, the story is not only enthralling reading, but a valuable contribution to the history of the Armada. Providing a text for the 'Spanish Story' are Froude's lectures on 'English Seamen in the Sixteenth Century', given when he was Regius Professor at Oxford, and his essay on Antonio Perez and the riddle of his sudden dismissal as Philip II's Secretary of State. A. L. Rowse discusses the background to these pieces and provides the answer to the riddle, discovered since Froude's death. 262 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Uk Edition. Trade paperback. Couple of very slight creases to back cover. Television personality Clive Gunnell has journeyed across south-western England for his latest HTV series. This book is his account of that journey, based on the diary which he kept, recording his impressions of the people and places he encountered. The book focuses on the countryside Clive passed through, from Lechlade to Lyme Regis. The intriguing history of this part of the country is related within its pages, and Clive describes his meetings en route. Legends of long ago stand alongside the living countryside of today. Clive's journey, through spectacular landscapes, used all modes of transport, inc;luding a steam-powered traction engine, a nineteenth-century Royal Mail coach, a horse-drawn bus, a gunnery boat, a Dorset crabbing boat, and a ballook - and, of course, he also walked! He recounts these adventures too. The book is illustrated with location photographs, and, taking the reader behind the scenes, provides an insight into how the programmes were made. Details of plances ope to visitors are also included. Packed with stories old and new, this book is a stometimes idiosyncratic study of a slice of England seen through the eyes of one of its most dedicated chronilcers of country life. Illustrated. 110 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Uk Paperback Edition. Paperback. A Literary Tour of Gloucestershire and Bristol. Gloucestershire is a vounty of great diversity, embracing not only the Cotswold Hills studded with villages of picture-book beauty, and the Forest of Dean with its ancient traditions of Free Mining and charcoal-burning, but also the fashionable spa resort of Cheltenham. As befits an area of such outstanding natural beauty and varied landscape, it is also steeped in literary connections - an aspect of the county this book sets out to explore. Gloucestershire has produced an abundant crop of native writers and poets over the years - W. E. Henley, Ivor Gurney, Laurie Lee and others - while the county has also attracted a host of distinuished literary visitors, from Samuel Pepys and Danial Defore to Beatrix Potter and J. B. Priestley. Meanwhile Bristol enjoys its own rich literary heritage - Robert Southey and Thomas Chatterton were born here, and Charles Dickens gave public readings in the city. Appropriately, perhaps, in the light of its seagoing tradition, Bristol can also boast links with Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe. Illustrated. 200 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Paperback. Brighton and Hove in Old Photographs. Here is evidence that it is still possible tp roduce a new and exciting book on Brighton. Due in the main to the town's diversity, Judy Middleton has successfully compiled a volume using previously unpublished material. Rather than being a pictorial history of an architecutal catalogue, the book illustrates the various aspects of life in Brighton and Hove areas from the last century until after the Second World War. The photographs range from a group of labourers on an old-fashioned building site with wooden scaffolding poles, to the elegant Sunday morning promenade on the Brunswick lawns, and from a delightful wedding group where the bridegroom and male guest wore flat cloth caps, to a garden party in the grounds of the Royal Pavillion. Stree scenes with horse buses, trams, motor buses and charabans are also well represented, as is the sea-front with its piers, bustle and boats, and the once rural spots where ducks swim on the pond no more. An historical period is covered by the section on HMS King Alfred where 22,500 RNVR officers came for training. overall, Judy Middleton provides us with a book that contains a wide selection to suit all tastes. Illustrated throughout. 160 pp.

Paperback. The Town Labourer. Foxing to end inside covers and edge. This book gives a picture of the social conditions created by the Industrial Revolution. The book begins by considering the character of life in the towns during the period. The Industrial Revolution led to huge increases in population in the towns and the daily lives of the workers were shaped by long working days. Leisure was only tolerated within the narrowest of limits, even music being considered a 'demoralizing' influence, and education was feared as making men less passive and therefore less useful. Later chapters describe the aggravating effect of the war with France, which brought uncertainty and disorder to both employer and labourer, the mobilization of workers, which led to Peterloo and the call for a minimum wage, and the employment of children in mill, mine and factory. The book also includes an account of the defences of the poor, with the rise of the Co-operative Movement and the Friendly Societies and the Evangelical revival, as workers turned to the more sympathetic chapels of the Methodists and Nonconformists. 346 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st UK Printing. Hardback. George Melhuish. Slight foxing to top edge. At the age of thirteen George Melhuish resolved never to smoke, never to marry and never to work for anybody in the capacity of an employee. These self-imposed rules he observed to the letter throughout his lifetime. In many ways these vows were the foundation upon which he built and devolpted a remarkable dual career as an artist and as a philosopher of great talent and originality. Illustrated with many of Melhuish's best works, Dr. de Cossart presents us with a vivid and absorbing portrait of this artist and philosopher's life - at times scandalous, and always colourful. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Reprint. In this volume, the author looks at converted lines in the territory of the former London and North Eastern Railway. Railway closures can be traced from the 1930s, with a sudden upswell during the 1960s, when the recommendations of the Beeching Report were implemented. Fortunately, far-sighted councils such as County Durham stepped in promptly following the Countryside Act of 1968, purchasing a number of abandoned lines for coversion into recreational trails and maintaining the continuity of the routes. As a result, the area covered offer an extensive selection of railway walks, with County Durham a national showpiece of what can be done. This book describes in detail ten of the best of these walks. The detailed descriptions of each walk includes OS grid references, helpful maps and illustrations, and comprehensive transport and refreshments information. If the walker's appetite for more exploration has been whetted, further walks, preserved railways and museums are suggested which shed light on the area's industrial past. The 'armchair walker' is also catered for, each chapter being prefaced with a full historical description of the line and a resume of its regeneration after closure. Railway walks offer something for everybody and with this book you can be sure that you'll be able to make the most of this fascinating and rather different aspect of the English countryside. Illustrated with B/W photos.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Birds of Somerset. This is a comprehensive account of the birds found in the 'new' county of Somerset. Although it contains earlier records, it is particularly concerned with those of the last twenty years, and reflects the changes that have occurred during this period and the new county's boundaries. Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Alan Sutton Edition. Hardback. The Civil War in the Midlands. 1642-1651. No part of England suffered more, or for so long, as the Midlands dureing the English Civil War. Owing to its strategic position and divided allegiance, the Midlands became the debatable land on which the maid field armies of the contending parties clashed in the struggle for national supremacy, and over which Royalist and Parliamentarian fought for local predominance. This book vividly records the military action which took place in, and the part played by, the Midlands during the Civil War. Combining careful analysis with eyewitness accounts, it also describes some of the burdens that the war placed on the civilian population, many of whom were totally indifferent to the cause of either side and wished only to be left in peace. This thoroughly researched volume was highly acclaimed upon its first publication. This new edition, illustrated with over thirty photographs and six maps, is essential reading for everyone with an interest in this dramatic period of the region's history. Illustrated. 209 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition. Hardback. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. This book is signed by the author with a message to George Rude (author and historian). This book for the first time gathers together an immense amount of historical material, drawing on sources from contemporary to modern times, and incorporating unique research. Among this is the discovery of a highly significent tradition preserved in the Tyrell family, which encouraged the author to investigate papers and Tyrell wills not examined before. She has conferred with others who have been concentrating on speicialised aspects of the case, including the diplomatic and Intelligence serves involved, and the correlation of so much material has enabled new ideas and possible interpretations to emerge. The result is a work which makes an importance new contribution to the subject and absorbingly investigates characters, political alliances, and psychological motivations. It cannot be ignored by historiaans seeking the key to one of the most bafflinf murder mysteries in our history: a study in power politics which suggests a 'Watergate' cover-up of its time. Illustrated. 215 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
