Die Pistis Sophia ist die Übersetzung und ein Kommentar zu einer speziellen Sammlung 2,000 Jahre alter christlich-gnostischer Manuskripte aus alten ägyptisch-koptischen Kodizes. Nachdem sich die frühe Kirche als die "offizielle Religion" des Römischen Reiches (325 n. Chr.) etabliert hatte, wurde di…e Pistis Sophia -Literatur weitgehend unterdrückt. Sie blieb aber als innere Lehre in den koptischen und afrikanischen Gemeinden erhalten. Die Worte Pistis Sophia sind Griechisch und bedeuten "Glaube Weisheit". Es handelt sich um eine Lehre, die Jesus Christus den Jüngern nach seiner Auferstehung zuteil werden ließ. Die eigentlichen gefundenen Manuskripte datieren auf die Zeit um 150-300 n. Chr. Jedoch heißt es in der Schriftrolle selbst, dass diese umfangreiche und weitreichende Belehrung nur 11 Jahre nach der Auferstehung erging. Den ursprünglichen Autoren zufolge sind es also wichtige post-evangelische Lehren des Christus. Was für unsere heutige Zeit bedeutsam erscheint, ist die Tatsache, dass Jesus diese Lehren nicht nur seinen männlichen sondern auch seinen weiblichen Jüngern und Aposteln offenbarte! In ihrem größeren Zusammenhang repräsentiert die Pistis Sophia nicht nur die Weisheit des Göttlichen Vaters und die Lehren des Göttlichen Sohnes, sondern auch die Göttliche Qualität des Heiligen Geistes als dem Geist der Gottheit, der sich als eine "göttlich-weibliche" Extension und Verkörperung personifiziert. Demgemäß erscheint der Heilige Geist in der weiblichen Gestalt der Göttlichen Mutter, der Himmlischen Mutter, der Jungfrau der Jungfrauen, und in den Gestalten Marias und Maria Magdalenas. Beim Lesen der fünf in der Pistis Sophia zusammengefassten Bücher wird deutlich, dass hier von etwas Größerem als einem einfachen 'dreistöckigen' Universum gesprochen wird, denn der Text handelt von mehr als nur Himmel, Erde und Unterwelt.
