Thomas Gray was a poet, letter writer and Cambridge Professor. An incredibly literary talent, Gray was offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1757 despite having only published 13 poems. Gray would decline the position. Gray's seminal work is the poem ' Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard' is one that was met with immediate success and leading to many of the poems phrasing to enter the English Lexicon including 'far for the madding crowd', and 'kindred spirit' to name but a few.
